Almost nineteen years ago, when I was a sophomore at Dartmouth, I spent eleven weeks interning at Music Maker Relief Foundation in Hillsborough NC. The people I met and the places I visited during that brief time changed the course of my life. Etta Baker, Carl and Franki Patton Rutherford, Essie Mae Brooks, Cool John Ferguson and Cora Mae Bryant to name just a few. It was a journey into the heart of American traditional music- blues, country-blues, Appalachian mountain music. Traveling to McDowell Co. WV in particular left a lasting impression on me. It's ultimately why I chose to return to WV for my medical education. In the process, the sense of connection to place I experienced in this community (both outwardly and imaginatively) served as something of a north star on my inner journey through vocational training. The path brought me face-to-face with some of my deepest fears (particularly of falling short in the life I chose) as well as with a mysterious and seemingly limitless resilience through music. Tomorrow, I play my first show of all original songs- 3 albums worth of material. For those who can make it, I would love to share with you some of what I've created. I'll be posting music to Bandcamp as well as streaming services in the weeks ahead, with much more written and ready to be recorded/shared. I hope it honors the musicians who changed my life, and the places their lives brought me both within and without. My story is about the intermingling of music and healing. Come be a part of it 🖤
