Discovering good food in Huntsville and beyond…

08/17/2024

🍑 With Labor Day on its way and summer almost over, you’ve got to try this limited time special at biscuitbellybiscuits! It’s called the Peach Frenchie….an open-faced french toast style biscuit with a bourbon peach topping, crushed pralines and whipped cream. It was so delicious that I admit I found myself scraping up all the leftover topping off the plate with my fork!

📍We live in South Huntsville, so we get excited when a new place chooses our part of town! Biscuit Belly has been a great spot for my Friday morning Breakfast Club to meet up. And if you join their Loyalty Program, you can get free Bonuts (biscuit donuts)! And after earning a few points, your coffee will be free just as mine was on this particular day.

👩‍🍳 For HUNTSVILLE RESTAURANT WEEK, Biscuit Belly has these exciting specials:

🍸 Espresso Martini, Peach Royale Martini & and Bourbon Peach Tea

🇺🇸 USA Today knew what they were doing when they voted Pizzelle's Confections the #1 Chocolate Shop in the Country!! And of course they have a HUNTSVILLE RESTAURANT WEEK special: one of their delicious cake parfaits (choice of spumoni, fruit or chocolate) + one house-made soda (spring orchard, lavender lemon, orange vanilla or root beer) for just $10. I chose the spumoni (cherry & pistachio) parfait with the Orange Vanilla soda, and it was perfection.

🍫 Their new location at Campus 805 is so much fun! And I love running into my lovely friend jensherman1 whenever I visit. Stop in and grab a candy bar, some artisan truffles, an ice cream, the drinking chocolate (my personal favorite), a macaron or any of the other scrumptious goodies they offer!

🍭 In the wise words of W***y Wonka, “If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it.” A confection paradise awaits you at Pizzelle’s! And don’t let Restaurant Week pass by without enjoying some of the local specials around town!

I ❤️ Huntsville Restaurant Week!

🍽️ And I love living so close to Good Company Cafe. The Dad’s Egg Sandwich is a must with my Friday morning breakfast group of ladies, so it’s exciting to have one of our favorites as a Restaurant Week special! Toasty warm bread, melty cheddar cheese, eggs, thick slices of bacon and a yummy garlic aioli to bring it over the top. You can get this fabulous breakfast sandwich with a coffee or a tea plus a homemade cookie for just $13! This special ends on August 18, so stop by and say hello ASAP to their super friendly and hardworking staff. South Huntsvillians like me are so very happy this place exists!

☕️ And by the way, the coffee they serve at Good Company comes from nearby Rooster's Crow Coffee Roastery. Another South Huntsville gem, serving our community from a large coffee menu using their freshly roasted beans! At any time, you may find me in there on one of their comfy couches enjoying their amazing coffee and getting some work done at the same time.

🍪 Are you looking for a sweet treat during HUNTSVILLE RESTAURANT WEEK? Check out cookie_fix at their Twickenham location in Downtown Huntsville. Their special offer for this week is BUY 6 COOKIES, GET ONE FREE!

📍I stopped by to grab a box of their decadent cookies to bring to trivia last night & share with my team. Obviously, it took no time for them to be devoured! My absolute favorite flavor is the Healthy Peanut Butter - oats, peanut butter, butter, chocolate chips, no flour & low in sugar. So of course two of those went in my box! I also added two Chocolate Chip, one Toffee Pecan Crunch, and two of the August Mashup cookies (Healthy Peanut Butter meets M&M Chocolate Chip).

😋 if you’re observant, you’ll notice only 6 cookies in my photo…..one guess where #7 (the “free” cookie) went?!

👩‍🍳 One thing I love about Cookie Fix is that they sell Frozen Dough To Go packages! Perfect for baking at home on your own time. Warm cookies straight from your own oven at any time of the day or night! I have used them for all sorts of gatherings with family & friends, and the baking instructions are super easy to follow.

⏲️ Who doesn’t love cookies baked fresh all day with a menu that rotates daily, weekly, monthly and seasonally?! Oh so gooey on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside. Get over there this week for their Huntsville Restaurant Week special, which ends on Saturday the 17th!

🚀 More HUNTSVILLE RESTAURANT WEEK specials!

🥐 I enjoyed sitting on the lovely patio this morning at L’Etoile Patisserie devouring their HRW special - a flaky, buttery, golden brown croissant with a warm cafe au lait!

📍If you haven’t been here yet, you are missing out on a delicious experience. Kevin’s pastries are baked from the heart, and you can taste that in every delectable bite! As soon as you walk in, there’s an overall feeling of comfort and warmth. Please make time this week to visit them & try out their amazing treats! Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

🐄 Today I tried out one of the Restaurant Week lunch specials at The Cozy Cow-the Chicken & Apple Summer Salad. It was loaded up with tasty grilled chicken, chopped granny smiths, feta cheese crumbles, blueberries, craisins, crunchy romaine, pecans and thin slices of red onion. The Lemon Maple Vinaigrette dressing was so delicious and fresh! It really hit the spot and kept me full throughout the afternoon.

☕️ I love this little cafe! They offer breakfast food, coffees, sandwiches, soups, ice cream, smoothies and lots of other goodies. I adore the cow tablecloths! The views of Big Spring Park from the patio are fantastic, too. Stop by and see them during restaurant week and try out their specials!

🇫🇷 Have you stepped into the beautiful bakery touslesjourshsv located in the midcitydistrict yet? It’s full of so much goodness! This bakery was launched in the US back in 2004 (with over 110 locations across the country), and the name means “every day” in French. Specializing in French-Asian inspired baked goods and flavorful coffees/espresso, and all their treats are made with carefully selected artisan ingredients. Their goodies are baked fresh daily, and they’re a feast for both the eyes and the tastebuds!

🥐 Croissants, cakes, macarons, baguettes, milk bread, donuts and croquettes….so much to enjoy & devour! My favorites were the Cloud Cake (light, fluffy & delicate), the Coffee macaron, and the Sunrise Breeze summer drink.

❤️Big thanks to cinnaholic.madison at cliftfarmal for the invite tonight to your ViP PARTY! We had a wonderful time enjoying your amazing & decadent cinnamon rolls!

📍The original Cinnaholic bakery opened back in 2010 in California. Today you can find other locations across the country in states like TX, FL, AZ, AL, MI, NC and more (over 100 stores across the USA & Canada).

🪴 What makes these delicious cinnamon rolls special is they are 100% VEGAN! The rolls are also dairy and lactose-free, cholesterol-free and egg-free. 🥇Do the Olympics have you in the mood for all things FRANCE? If you live in South Huntsville like I do, you can get some exquisite patisserie treats at Le Macaron French Pastries Valley Bend! The owners Michele and Pascal are originally from France, and they bake fresh all the delicious pastries in the shop. Macarons, croissants, baguettes, eclairs, sorbet, truffles and so much more!

☕️ Michele made me a superb Honey Bee Latte! A lovely combo of coffee, milk, honey and vanilla. I also had a fabulous Chocolate Croissant and took to-go an egg & bacon pastry for a late morning snack. If you’re there on a nice weather day, they also offer a beautiful outdoor patio that looks out at the pond and walking trail.

🇫🇷 If you can’t be in Paris for the Olympics, why not immerse yourself in the flavors of France with some délicieuses pâtisseries? Visit Le Macaron French Pastries Valley Bend in Jones Valley! You’ll really enjoy meeting Michele and Pascal, not to mention indulging in all the goodies their shop has to offer.

🍓 I’m happy that acai bowls are so popular these days because I love them! The first one I ever had was at Frutta Bowls in Auburn when my kids were students there, and I immediately wanted to have another one once I got home to Huntsville. We finally have some great spots in town to enjoy them, and that’s fantastic news!

🥜 At nauticalbowlshuntsville, you’ll find so many fresh and delicous bowl options. If I can get peanut butter and cacao nibs on my bowl, I am a happy camper! So I ordered the Nauti Bowl: acai, pitaya, granola, peanut butter, bananas and cacao nibs. Full of protein and nutrients, and so very refreshing! I also wanted to take one to-go for a late afternoon snack at work, so I chose the Protein Bowl. Of course it had the peanut butter and cacao that I love but also acai, chia, h**p seeds, protein crumbles, granola and bananas. It was the perfect pick-me-up for when the laziness hits me in the late afternoon!

🏄 And by the way, the surfboard tables here are AMAZING!

🐓 Had a fabulous late dinner last night at superchix in Town Madison! The skin-on french fries were perfection…a huge serving of hot & crunchy fries with so many great dipping sauce options. You guys know how much I love frozen custard, and the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup version here was super delicious (look at all that candy on top of my custard)! And of course we needed some greens, so we devoured the Asian Sesame Salad. The lettuce was very fresh, crunchy cashews, mandarin oranges, shredded carrots, Fresno peppers (for a great kick), and a wonderful sesame dressing! My husband is a big BBQ sauce guy, so he tore into the Cheesy BBQ sandwich with gusto. Before his first bite, I snagged a large onion ring off the top. So tasty!

🍦Lauren Whisenant, we surely do appreciate the invite! And see the employee holding the door open for us in the photo? That is José, and he made sure we were very well taken care of! Filled up our drinks, got us napkins, chatted with us about the food, kept our table clean, and even walked us out when we were heading home. Please go visit the sweet staff at this Town Madison location…excellent food & great service will be your reward!

🍤 I’m a big fan of shrimp tacos. If you are too, you need to try the ones at Del Chuco: Cocina Y Cantina! They are quite delicious. We sat on their lovely back patio with friends drinking some tasty margaritas in their very cool hobnail glassware. Good times!

Owners Erick & Stephanie Luther are definitely doing something right with their already successful business thestandardhsv on Holmes Avenue in Downtown Huntsville. And now with Del Chuco and also chuco_underground, you can enjoy their Tex Mex food and cocktails on the Courthouse Square as well!

🧱 🥄 If you happen to be in Orange Beach and you love breakfast as much as I do, make sure you stop by Brick & Spoon - Orange Beach! The menu is huge, so many wonderful choices like beignets, bloody marys, omelets, pancakes, french toast and benedicts. We chose the Breakfast Tacos, Bananas Foster French Toast, Traditional Benedict and the SBC Wrap. My french toast had caramelized bananas, pecans, powdered sugar, whipped cream and of course Foster sauce. Sweet & delicious! My friends enjoyed their entrees as well, and our server Brittany was so friendly (loved her eggs & bacon earrings). The Fairhope Breakfast Blend coffee was fabulous, too!

📍 You can also find other Alabama locations of Brick and Spoon in Tuscaloosa, Opelika and Mobile.

🍑 We just returned from some rest & relaxation at the beach! A must-stop for us on any trip down to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach is Peach Park in Clanton. We ate a fabulous BBQ lunch, did some shopping for fresh produce, walked around the beautiful grounds, and even picked up a few gifts for friends back home! And of course we couldn’t leave without enjoying some of their famous peach ice cream. Also be sure to try the peach cobbler, peach milkshakes, and peach fried pies!

🥩Urban Cookhouse-Whitesburg,Hsv,AL is NOW OPEN! If you enjoy their Bridge Street location, you’ll be happy to know the new South Huntsville location took over for the Jason’s Deli that closed down. Pictured is the Urban Cowboy sandwich (lime marinated steak, caramelized onions, peppers & cheese on a French roll) with a side of cheddar pasta and a Grilled Chicken Bacon sandwich with spicy aioli and a side of broccoli salad.

🔥There was a nice crowd on the evening we were there, and the employees were friendly and helpful. UC’s motto is “Buy Local, Eat Urban”, and they strive to bring local value to each location’s community. They emphasize supporting local farmers, and their meats are prepared on a Big Green Egg with local hickory wood.

🧊❄️ We all need ways to cool off during this hot summer. An icy cold drink from Mudslingers Drive Thru Coffee Huntsville is a great choice! The service is super friendly and super fast. I slurped down an Iced Strawberry Wafer (a white mocha with pistachio and strawberry) and a Sun Burn Lotus Energy (red lotus, dragonfruit, raspberry and cranberry). Delicious and refreshing! The July Specials menu looks fantastic, and I will be back to try out some of those other offerings very soon.

📍🚗 In addition to Owens Cross Roads here in Alabama, you can also find this drive-thru chain in Anniston. And nationwide in AR, CO, IA, KY, MN, MO, MS, SD & TX (and coming soon to TN and NE). So you can check them out locally and even on your travels!

☕️ Coffee and beignets from a drive-thru white shipping container?? Yes, please! You can find Beignets & Brew at The Gateway on Rideout Road. The Nutella beignets were so very delicious! Hot, fresh and pillowy soft on the inside. And the iced salted caramel mocha (espresso, caramel, chocolate, milk and sea salt) was the perfect beignet companion.

🇺🇸 Keep an eye out for their seasonal beignet flavors…for example, this week you can get July 4th holiday beignets that are red, white & blue! 🍱 The address of 964 Airport Road Suite 4 has housed quite a few restaurants over the years. The ones that come to mind are Luciano, Brix, Bacchus and Sante Fe Grill, but I’m probably leaving out a few others that have come and gone. Today, you will find Dashu Japanese cuisine & Bar in that location.

🍣 Dashu in Chinese means “uncle” because the owner of this particular Japanese restaurant is Chinese! He has worked in both Chinese and Japanese restaurants in many of the southern states, but he hails from Tennessee.

☂️ The interior of this place has always been quite pretty, especially the back garden room. We sat there next to the fountain on this visit, under the beautiful umbrellas all lit up. The front dining room has lovely columns, a fireplace, and shiny chandeliers. On nice weather days, there’s a covered patio out front as well.

🫖 My husband and his friend ordered the Sushi Boat for 3 (they are two guys who eat like three) which was 10 pieces of nigiri, 12 pieces of sashimi, rainbow rolls, dragon rolls and Alabama rolls. It was a thing of beauty! And of course, the guys devoured it pretty quickly. The empty boat was evidence of how much they liked it!
My friend and I each ordered a Dinner Box, and I chose the Shrimp Teriyaki. So much food! In addition to the shrimp, steamed rice, fried dumplings, vegetable tempura and California rolls, it also came with miso soup and ginger salad. I was too full to finish it all, so I had enough leftovers to enjoy it again for lunch the following day.

📍It will be nice if this restaurant has the staying power to live on at this address on Airport Road. We enjoyed our meal very much! So if you stop by to dine there, let me know what you think.

🚀 We had a super fun Saturday in Downtown Huntsville! We braved the heat to stroll around the NASA in the Park event in Big Spring Park. My husband is an aerospace engineer and local contractor, so he’s always interested in seeing what’s new and exciting in his field. There was so much to see! Exhibits, hands-on learning activities, free goodies, live STEM demonstrations, music on the stage, food trucks and so much more. The event was well attended, and we noticed so many families who were really enjoying themselves!

🎨 Our next stop was Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment to help our friend Liv celebrate the grand opening of The Little Lab inside Studio 254 Paper Wasters Club. Not only is Liv a talented graphic designer and computer coder, but now she’s created a line of beauty products “where self-care meets science”! We snatched up some of her very cool Bouncy Body Wash (the scents are AMAZING), and she also offers shower jellies & bath bombs. Stop by, meet Liv, and go home with some very unique gifts!

🐷 You can’t miss the smell of Texas BBQ when you’re wandering around Lowe Mill, and since it was lunchtime we decided to satisfy our craving for MEAT by dining at Kar's Char. This “taste of Texas” restaurant is close to celebrating their first year of business at Lowe Mill, and you can find them on the south side of the water tower parking lot inside the historic railroad rooms. You’ll find smoked meats such as brisket, pulled pork, and beef smoked sausage as well as burgers, hot dogs, chili, and even frito pie! Their long list of side items includes mac and cheese (which was FABULOUS), pintos, collard greens, vinegar slaw, potato salad, fries and onion rings. We were too full to indulge in one of their homemade cookies or the banana pudding, so we’ll have to save those desserts for our next visit.

🍃 If you’ve lived in Huntsville for 30+ years like I have, you probably remember the Port of Madison restaurant on Madison Boulevard. In that location today, you’ll now find Banana Leaves Asian Restaurant & Sushi Bar inside the Best Western hotel. I stopped in there recently for a late lunch with a friend. They have a nice outdoor patio, but it was too hot on that specific day for sitting outside.

🍚 We started with the Chinese style pan-fried Scallion Pancakes, which were both crunchy and tangy. For my entree, I tried the Pineapple Chicken Friend Rice. It was a large portion of fried rice with plenty of grilled pineapple, chicken, carrots, scrambled eggs, peas and onions. It had a slight curry flavor with a bit of a kick, which I enjoyed. My friend ordered the Mee Goreng, a Malaysian style stir-fry egg noodle dish. It had all the good veggies like carrots, broccoli, onions and bean sprouts, plus scrambled egg and tofu. She loved the bit of sweetness in the sauce and also the excellent texture of the stir-fried noodles.

🍽️ We both had leftovers to take home, which is always a plus. Our servers were very friendly and the food came out quickly, which is great when you have limited time for a lunch break. We also were happy to notice how clean and organized the restaurant was. Stop by soon for lunch or dinner!

🚜 We had such a fun morning picking blackberries at Isom's Orchard! We checked in at the table, paid for our containers, and walked up and down the rows of bushes picking the ripest, largest and juiciest berries. I have to admit for every bunch I put in the bucket, I also snacked on a few. They are tough to refuse!

🍑 After we filled up our buckets, we made the short drive over to Isom’s produce stand. We snatched up some of their fresh peaches, tomatoes, lettuce, and blackberry jam. They also had watermelons, cantaloupes, squash, peppers, cucumbers, cabbage…..and so much more!

🗓️ Make sure to add blackberry picking to your schedule this summer. It’s fun for all ages! They are planning on June 21/22 and June 28/29 (weather permitting). You’ll pay $12 for 1/2 gallon and $20 for 1 gallon. Containers are provided, so please don’t bring your own.

🌸 Had the PERFECT afternoon date with my besties this week at Lanier House Madison! The moment you walk in, you are whisked away to an English garden. This locally owned tea house is run by Tammy Hall, who also runs the very popular restaurant Main Street Cafe Madison in Downtown Madison with her husband John.

🫖 We reserved our tea time online, and our hostess Carmen was all ready for us when we arrived. The interior of the tea room was dripping in flowers, murals, bright colors, comfy furniture, and vintage china. We enjoyed three courses: savory first, then a bread course, and sweets at the end. The tea pairings for their current menu are an Apricot Black tea to start, followed by Vanilla Black Tea, and finishing off with Pineapple Hibiscus White Iced Tea.

🍎 All of our petite snacks were delicious! Our savory bites included a basil pesto turkey sandwich, a slice of Honey Crisp apple topped with some savory chicken salad and a cracker topped with goat cheese and a slice of juicy nectarine. Round two came along with two types of scones (lavender honey & classic vanilla) along with clotted cream and orange marmalade. Back in 2021, I took a wonderful trip to England with my 3 sisters. These scones brought me right back to the daily English breakfasts that we devoured on our trip! We finished with a creamy pineapple mousse, an Earl Grey lavender mini cake and a chocolate drizzled coconut macaroon. The perfect ending to a fabulous afternoon of goodies!

☕️ By the way, Lady Whistledown’s newest gossip in the ton is that the month of June at Lanier House has a Bridgerton theme! So gather up your lords and ladies, put on your waistcoats and gowns, and send out your carriage in the direction of
Martin Street. You won’t be disappointed!
