Under Alabama law, employers are responsible for on the job injuries. However, there’s an exception for “willful conduct”. Some Alabama cases have held that workers’ compensation insurance does not cover horseplay. If the City of Decatur knows officers are engaging in horseplay then workers’ compensation would likely cover the officer.
Thankfully, the officer only fell a few feet and it looks like he’s wearing a protective vest. I hope he’s ok! I love seeing police officers engage with the community. It is good for Decatur PD to have officers who are engaging with their local citizens.
