Brain fog, exhaustion, delirium are all real physiological factors we have to fight in austere environments. Let's take a minute to talk about boiling water as a method of water treatment. Why would you want to potentially boil water when you have other options at your disposal for treating your water? There are myriad of pros and cons to when and where you choose to use this tool. For example, if I suspect that I am up against a particularly tough bug, like Cryptosporidium, and I know have to wait a full four hours for my chlorine based treatment to be effective (unless you're using chlorine dioxide) boiling looks like a very good option to provide usable water at my disposal in minutes. In the event I'm not particularly worried about my thermal signature (or noise signature if I'm using a jetboil), and want to conserve my other non-renewable treatment resources, boiling is an excellent option. Effective against viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and cysts, boiling is a valuable tool - but is not the end all and be all. It WILL NOT remove heavy metals, minerals, sediment or other chemical contaminants. The other resource that boiling consumes is fuel in some shape, form or fashion and we'd encourage you to take this into account if you are planning around using boiling as part of your water PACE plan. We always recommend that you use a quality stainless steel or titanium vessel for boiling your water and never leave a tight cap on your vessel if it does not have a provision for venting. All of our water data cards have the these helpful reminders of your boil times based on your elevations for you to reference in a pinch. TUSC (Tactical Urban Sustainment Course) at is never the same twice. Lessons are learned, theories are tested and sometimes experiments fail. It's not about the failures, but how we learn to handle ourselves in the midst of them and continue forward. That's the beauty of the training environment, is that it gives us a controlled setting to test ourselves in and fail graciously; so we can grow mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. I had the pleasure to work with a number of exceedingly skilled and motivated individuals this past week and was pleased to see them learn and grow in this environment - including seeing some new, unique and organic use of our products and packaging. We're excited to announce we are officially carrying washers! They make a great addition to the lanyard on your water data card core set - keeping eyes or hands on - critical gear in low light or no light scenarios. We'll be offering a single washer as an option to add to your core WDC set when you buy the core kit or as a standalone product in a package of two. Filtering water can be a fairly simple task or an arduous one. It all depends on what you're up against in that water. One of the strengths of the AR-1 is it's ability to be scaled up or down, depending your circumstances. The AR-1 was designed largely around moving water quickly and quietly - harvesting/collecting the water and getting away from the source to an area where you can establish a much more thorough security footprint. Once your security has been addressed, the process of filtering and purifying water can be more closely attended to. As a diaphram pump, the AR-1 can act in an on-demand role, providing water when it's needed and shutting itself off when its not. The AR-1 comes with the two in-line strainers to help you get the macro sediment out of the water and keep it out of the guts of the pump itself - but you can and absolutely use the output pressure of the AR-1 to drive a larger pressure-dependent filter system. There are several good RV-type filter systems out there that use standard 4.5", 10" and 20" big-blue filter bodies. These filter bodies allow you to choose the filter based on the size filtration you're looking for and the contaminant type you're up against. Camco also makes an excellent, cigar type filter that should be treated as a consumable filter, but will knock down a significant amount of sediment and chemical contamination, but will not remove all of it. Lastly, we have even used the Sawyer Tap to varying degrees of success. With a 0.2 micron pore size, these can clog very quickly when under pressure, but if you've selected a relatively clean, clear source, these can be made to be very effective. Any filter system should be looked and and approached in stages - no one stage doing all the work, but the more stages you link together, the cleaner and clearer you can get your water. Whether you're running a bucket system, or multistage RO machine, its your responsibility to know your equipment and water treatment is your responsibility to know it's extent of application and limitations.
