My name is Bessie Elaine Minor Brown, the youngest child of Floyd and Lurline Rice Minor of Starkville, MS. I was taught to work tirelessly to be the best I can be. Never quit! My life’s work has been centered around an oratorical contest from high school- Freedom to Belong. I was a 9th grader standing in a huge auditorium during the height of the civil rights movement. I always had used books; but I worked.

I became the first black cashier in town, a trailblazer at Mississippi State University I enrolled in August, 1967. I served as the first black editor on the Reflector, the first black resident assistant, the first black political science graduate and one of the founding members of “Black Voices.”

Though I longed to go to law school, I couldn’t afford to attend and loans were out of the question for my family. I found my passion in teaching. I loved seeing leaders develop with independent thinking. I taught at the historic St. Joseph High School located in South Bend, Indiana as the only black teacher in the 80’s, serving as head of textbook adoption for Mississippi. I became Georgia’s first Economics teacher of the year. I served 37 1/2 years in education serving as a teacher, instructional coordinator, middle school principal and as an Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Special Projects.

The world is a mystery, it’s our job to discover and make it a better place.

My husband of 51 years and my greatest supporter is Ralph Brown. I have two children who are both educators and dedicated to helping build future leaders and shapers of our world.

I am actively involved in AKA and Pilot International. I serve in my church in any capacity where I can.
