Swanson Finishes Fifth at Port Royal Saturday
In Doran Binks Racing’s Mission Foods No. 77
And Is Point Leader With One-Third of the Season Complete

PORT ROYAL, Pa., June 17 — Thanks to a solid top-five finish in Saturday night’s USAC Silver Crown race at Port Royal Speedway, Kody Swanson and Doran Binks Racing remain in the lead in the series’ driver and entrant point standings with a third of the season complete.

Driving Doran Binks Racing’s dirt Silver Crown car, which is a Maxim chassis powered by a Hampshire Chevrolet engine, Swanson qualified third for the 50-lap race for sponsors that include Mission Foods, Glenn Farms, and Wilke Orthodontics. He was only 0.127 of a second off the new track record of 19.816 seconds that Brady Bacon set to better the mark Mitchel Moles established here last year and earn the pole. Daison Pursley, who ended up winning the race on the last lap, qualified second.

Logan Seavey, who won the two previous USAC Silver Crown races on Port Royal’s half-mile dirt oval, and Justin Grant managed to pass Swanson on the first lap before the first of two caution flags waved with one lap down for C.J. Leary and Nathan Moore, who crashed low in Turn 4.

For most of the race Swanson had his hands full defending his position from Matt Westfall, who hounded him almost constantly. Swanson tried both the high and the low grooves to spurt away from Westfall, who preferred the low groove.

Westfall made a pass stick working lap 13 to push Swanson, a native of Kingsburg, Calif., who now lives in Indianapolis, to sixth. However, seconds later Seavey, who had been third behind Bacon and Pursley, went into the infield with a mechanical issue that caused his car to lose fuel. After a stop in the work area he reported to the tail and went on to finish tenth, but his issue put Swanson back in fifth place for the restart. Caution flag laps didn’t count on Saturday.

Moles threatened to pass Swanson around lap 18, but Swanson hung tough in fifth place. At the halfway point he was 1.134 seconds behind Westfall and 1.174 ahead of Moles, and three laps later he set his fastest lap of the race.

Grant passed Bacon for the lead on lap 30 in Turn 1 and two laps later Swanson got by Westfall for fourth place. Westfall stuck to him like glue, however, and he passed Swanson on lap 40 to push Swanson, who is the winningest driver in series history, back to fifth.

Pursley passed Bacon for second on lap 33 and then he drove around the outside of Grant in Turn 4 on the last lap for his first career USAC Silver Crown victory. Grant finished second and Bacon placed third for the third year in a row. Westfall was fourth and Swanson finished fifth for the second year in a row.

Chase Dietz passed Moles for sixth on lap 49. Alex Bright, Briggs Danner, and Seavey rounded out the top 10.

The time of the race was 28:53.852, so Pursley broke Seavey’s 50-lap USAC Silver Crown record of 29.32.10 for this track.

“Last year we were loose here and this time we were too tight,” Swanson said afterwards. “I need to get better at helping to figure out how to be more in the middle next year set-up wise. The drivers and teams in this series are so good. It’s hard just trying to figure out the best set-up and how the track will change as the race progresses.

“But I’m grateful for all the work the Doran Binks guys do to keep us in the hunt and give us a chance,” he added. “And we’re all grateful for the support of our sponsors like Mission Foods, Glenn Farms, and Wilke Orthodontics.

“I moved around and tried all the lines trying to find out where we could be faster,” he added. “Sometimes when I was high on the cushion in Turn 3 I only had one wheel on the ground, but then the others came back down so that was all good. We’ll just try again another day.”

The 50-lap race was the finale of an open-wheel show called the Eastern Blast Presented by Bobby Rahal Toyota of Lewistown, as the non-wing USAC AMSOIL sprint cars and the track’s Weikert Livestock 410 winged sprint cars shared the card.

The event was streamed live by Flo Racing.

The next USAC Silver Crown race is June 21 at Madison International Speedway in Oregon, Wis. Swanson has won three of the four USAC Silver Crown races ever held at that half-mile paved oval, including last year’s race.

There are two USAC Silver Crown events in July: July 4 at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track, and a two-day show July 19-20 at Salt City Speedway in Hutchinson, Kan. The series returns to Pennsylvania for a race at Jennerstown on Aug. 10. The complete schedule can be found at usacracing.com.

Just got back from Jerry Gappens' funeral this morning (and the viewing yesterday). He would have loved the big turnout. While chatting with his brother-in-law, we figured out that Jerry and I were friends and colleagues for 43 years. At the time of his death Jerry was the general manager of Eldora Speedway. Here's a photo of him in victory lane at Gas City with Chad Blonde. It's still hard to believe he's gone. He was a great guy!

Latest update from the IMS press room is that the track drying process will begin soon; the local NBC station as well as Peacock will air the race locally when it does start (no blackout!); most of the pre-race festivities (especially the military ones) and the standard ones like the anthem, "Back Home Again in Indiana," etc. will be held; the flyover is still on; and Kyle Larson is staying here to race!

Nolen Racing’s Swanson Leads All the Way
In ‘Night Before the 500’ Saturday

WHITELAND, Ind., Aug. 25 — Seeing its driver, Kody Swanson, earn the pole and lead every lap to win the 40-lap asphalt sprint car feature during the “Night Before the 500” show Saturday night at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Ind. was the highlight of a busy weekend for Nolen Racing.

Things also started perfectly for the Whiteland, Ind.-based team for the two USAC Silver Crown races held over the Indy 500 weekend when Swanson qualified on the pole for the headliner of the Dave Steele Carb Night Classic at Lucas Oil Raceway on Friday night. His 31st pole extended his record as the driver who has won more USAC Silver Crown pole positions than anyone in history.

He also led the first 40 laps of the 100-lap race before he was forced to pit under yellow on lap 56 while running second due to a problem with a brake caliper. However, he returned to the track and still finished tenth.

Neither USAC Silver Crown cars nor Swanson flip very often, but that happened with nine laps down during the 65th running of the Hoosier Hundred Sunday night at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Luckily Swanson wasn’t hurt in the five-car accident. He was credited with a 26th-place finish and the team is now in second place in the overall point standings, 22 points behind Justin Grant, who has 199 points to Swanson’s 177.

The team’s next race is the Pay Less Little 500 asphalt sprint car race Saturday, Sept. 5 at Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Ind. It won that event in both 2018 and 2019 with Swanson.

The Sept. 6 Du Quoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds USAC Silver Crown race has been postponed and no new date has been announced for it yet. The Eldora Four-Crown Nationals have been canceled for 2020 due to COVID-19. The only known date remaining on the Silver Crown schedule for now is the Oct. 4 race at Toledo (Ohio) Speedway.

Night Before the 500 Saturday

Simply put, things couldn’t have gone any better for Nolen Racing Saturday night at the Night Before the 500 at Lucas Oil Raceway, which was a special non-points USAC sprint and midget event. Nolen Racing competed in the sprint car portion.

After winning a Must See Racing asphalt sprint car race at the same track in June with a V6 Tranter-prepped Chevrolet engine, the team installed a Tranter V8 in its Beast chassis for Saturday’s contest.

Swanson won the pole with a time of 20.973 seconds, which was 0.046 better than fellow front-row starter Aaron Pierce’s 21.019, and he led all 40 laps of the race for the top prize of $10,000.

There was only one yellow, which occurred at the start when Ken Schrader and Nick Hamilton tangled in Turn 2. Neither were hurt.

Pierce chased Swanson the whole way. At first Pierce was 0.4 or 0.5 behind Swanson’s yellow No. 4, but he was only 0.247 behind on lap 17 as Swanson had to slow a bit due to traffic he was lapping. But by lap 25 the lapped cars weren’t a problem and Swanson was able to extend his lead to 1.135 seconds. He then padded his advantage. He was 2.170 ahead by lap 29, 3.110 seconds ahead by lap 38, and his margin of victory over Pierce was a whopping 4.092 seconds.

Kyle Hamilton finished third, Tyler Roahrig was fourth and Tanner Swanson, Kody Swanson’s younger brother, was fifth in the 23-car field.

Kody Swanson and Pierce both set their fastest race laps on lap 4, with Swanson again faster with a 21.202 to Pierce’s 21.251.

“I’m so thankful to everyone on this Nolen Racing team; they worked hard and we had a great sprint car,” Swanson said afterwards. “We do this in memory of Gene [Nolen], and I’m so thankful for his son, Greg, who is carrying the torch for us and doing a great job of running a race team. These guys are first class and I’m thankful to be racing for them.”

Dave Steele Carb Night Classic Friday

Kody Swanson extended his record as the driver who has won more USAC Silver Crown pole positions than anyone in history when he got number 31 Friday at Lucas Oil Raceway.

Later that night the five-time and reigning series champion led the 100-lap race that headlined the Dave Steele Carb Night Classic from laps 1-40. Struggling with a brake problem, he motioned his fellow front-row starter, Tanner Swanson, to go by him. Kody Swanson was still in second place when he pitted under a yellow on lap 56 for minimal repairs. He then rallied back to finish tenth despite having no real brakes. Tanner Swanson went on to win the race.

“We had to pit; the rear caliper was dragging on the ground underneath the car,” Kody Swanson said. “The team did great to secure the caliper on the caution and cap off the line so we’d stop losing [brake] fluid. That at least allowed me to have some front brakes to try to avoid a crash ahead of us for the remainder of the race, but I still had no real brakes to race with on our way back through the field. We had a really good car, and rallied to finish tenth without the brakes.”

Prior to the mechanical issue Kody Swanson was flying. He had over a 1-second lead by lap 4, and he had built up a 10-car-length lead over his younger brother before the mechanical issue.

The Swanson brothers were the only leaders.

Kody Swanson won the Fatheadz pole award with a time of 20.732 seconds for the 0.686-mile asphalt oval, which was 0.245 of a second faster than Tanner Swanson’s best time. That accomplishment earned him a $1,000 bonus from Mac and Carol Steele, parents of the late Dave Steele, for whom this race is named.

Hoosier Hundred Sunday

Driving one of the team’s Maxim USAC Silver Crown cars, Kody Swanson qualified eighth for the 100-lapper on the 1-mile dirt oval at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Sunday with a time of 32.150, just 0.724 off the pole. He started sixth after two drivers ahead of him (Kyle Larson and Shane Cockrum) changed their right-rear tires and thus had to go to the rear of the 32-car field for the start.

Swanson passed Jimmy Light on the first lap to take fifth place. Tyler Courtney passed Swanson on the second lap to push him back to sixth. He stayed in sixth place until Larson, the eventual winner, passed him on lap seven. He was running in seventh place between Brady Bacon and Jake Swanson (no relation) when the trouble occurred.

Kyle Robbins slowed coming out of Turn 4 to bring out the yellow with nine laps down. As the field was still slowing down in a dark portion of Turn 2, there was contact between several drivers. Kody Swanson, who has won this race four times in the past, flipped on the backstretch as did David Byrne, who was running 11th. Austin Nemire, Light and Terry Babb were also involved. Luckily all were unhurt, but all of those cars were done for the night except for Robbins’ car.

Swanson’s official finishing position was 26th.

Six drivers flipped during the race. In addition to Swanson and Byrne’s flips, Carmen Perigo, Bacon and John Heydenreich flipped following a restart still with nine laps down. Bryan Gossel flipped on lap 34. All were unhurt except Heydenreich, who suffered a concussion, a fractured left cheekbone and some broken bones around his eyes. He is expected to be released from the hospital today.

Bacon Wins Twin Sprint Features;
Losh, Conover and Headley Jr. Also Star
In Dale Korporal’s ‘Candyman Classic’
Friday at Gas City I-69 Speedway

GAS CITY, Ind., Aug. 22 – Gas City I-69 Speedway’s candyman, Dale Korporal of Upton, Ind., doesn’t usually have bacon candy in his bag as he distributes sweets at the track every Friday night.

He might want to stock up on that variety of candy, however, because Brady Bacon was the star of the “Candyman Classic” show that Korporal sponsored Friday night.

Bacon, a native of Broken Arrow, Okla., who now lives in Wi******er, Ind., accomplished the extremely difficult feat of winning both 20-lap non-wing sprint car features to earn $4,040. He added an extra $900 in bonus awards for a $4,940 payday at the Grant County quarter-mile dirt oval. The total purse for the sprint car division was over $20,000.

Derek Losh of Rensselaer, Ind., recorded his sixth 20-lap modified feature victory at Gas City this season. Jordan Conover of Forest, Ohio was a first-time winner in the 15-lap street stock feature. The track’s defending hornet champion, James Headley Jr. of Wabash, Ind., took the 15-lap hornet main event for his first Gas City feature victory of the season.

Bacon took home trophies that featured a container at the top for candy, and there were giant lollipops in victory lane.

Bacon became the sixth different winner of a regular non-wing sprint car feature at Gas City so far this year, and joined defending track champion Thomas Meseraull of Waveland, Ind. as the only driver to win two Gas City sprint features so far in 2020.

Bacon drove the Longworth Equipment Company No. 410. In addition to that Trenton, Ohio-based company, the car is also sponsored by McIntosh Racing and LEI Home Enhancements.

He started fourth in the first feature and took the lead from Shane Cockrum of Benton, Ill. on the third lap. Kevin Thomas Jr. of Cullman, Ala., passed Cockrum on the race’s only restart with four laps down to move into second place, and he finished in that position, 1.719 seconds behind Bacon. The track’s 2018 sprint car champion, Clinton Boyles of Cedar Lake, Ind., placed third followed by Cockrum and Robert Ballou of Tipton, Ind.

Bacon had a harder path in the second feature but a bigger margin of victory, 2.504 seconds. Colten Cottle of Kansas, Ill., who is driver Shane Cottle’s nephew, started on the pole and led the first two laps before giving way to a high-riding Stevie Sussex of Phoenix, Ariz., on the frontstretch.

But Bacon was on the march from his tenth-place starting position. He was eighth on lap one, seventh on lap two, sixth on laps three and four, fifth on lap five, fourth on lap six, and third on lap seven. He moved into second behind Sussex on lap eight, and took the lead from him working lap 13. He then said good-bye to all of his rivals in the non-stop event.

Matt Westfall of Pleasant Hill, Ohio passed Sussex working lap 17 to take second. Robert Ballou of Tipton, Ind. got around Sussex on the last lap for third, and Sussex finished fourth. Thomas had another top-five finish when he crossed the line in fifth.

Bacon received a $500 bonus for winning both races, and the $300 passing award for being the driver who gained the most spots over the course of both features, advancing 12 positions. He got another $100 from A.J. and Matt Brookmyer for being the hard charger in the second sprint feature. Westfall earned the Brookmyer’s $100 for being the hard charger in the first sprint feature, as he started 17th and finished ninth.

The Brookmyers also gave a new right-rear Hoosier tire to the three drivers who just missed the cut in the three B-mains. They were Anthony D’Alessio of Gas City; Ricky Lewis of Ventura, Calif. and Billy Cribbs of Muncie, Ind.

Other drivers received product certificates from All Star Performance.

Jamie Frederickson of Kokomo, Ind. and Zack Pretorious of Yorktown, Ind. flipped in Turn 4 at the start of the third B-main. They both got out of their sprint cars under their own power, but Frederickson was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Losh started third in the 20-lap modified feature. He took the lead from Tony Anderson of Lima, Ohio on the frontstretch working lap six and soldiered on to another victory. There was only one yellow, which occurred with five laps to go when the driver who was fifth, Dillon Nusbaum of Warsaw, Ind., spun between Turns 1 and 2. With Losh and Anderson at the front of the pack the best battle was for third. Dylan Woodling passed Aaron Orr of Columbia City, Ind. for that position on lap 19 and got the show spot. Orr placed fourth and Terry Sroufe of Huntington, Ind. rounded out the top five.

Superior Sales and Service, Aggressive, R & R Transmission, Rensselaer Iron and Metal and Talbert Manufacturing sponsor Losh’s No. 21.

Conover won the caution-plagued street stock feature after taking the lead from Adam Lantz of Bryan, Ohio on lap three. Andy Bishop of Gas City chased Conover’s Nightmare chassis No. 7 most of the way but finished second, just 0.374 of a second behind. Bill Lewis of Fountain City, Ind. was third; Jami Cale of Huntington, Ind. finished fourth and Gerald Mullenix of Marion, Ind. rounded out the top five. Young Dalton Bishop of Gas City, Andy’s son, did a good job to come from 18th to sixth.

The winner, a welder by trade, is sponsored by Lucky’s Taproom and Eatery of Dayton, Ohio; Callie’s Performance Products of Fostoria, Ohio, and Omni Feed and Supply of Findlay, Ohio.

The hornet feature was an all-Headley show. Gas City Walk of Famer James Headley of Marion, Ind. led the first lap from the pole before his son got by, and they ran nose-to-tail for most of the race. On lap 11 Headley Jr. got too high in Turn 4, which allowed his father to regain the lead. On the last lap, however, Headley Jr. dipped under his dad in Turn 1 and went on to win in the No. 00, which is sponsored by Dudding’s Heating and Cooling, Garriott Electric, Edwards Automotive and TJR Trucking. Headley Jr. was 0.304 seconds ahead of his father at the checkered.

Bill Lewis of Fountain City, Ind. came from sixth to finish third. Kolton Sollars of LaFontaine, Ind. placed fourth and Mark Casto of Marion, Ind. finished fifth.
