STORYLINES! USAC SPRINTS GET AFTER IT AT CIRCLE CITY ON FRIDAY
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
Indianapolis, Indiana (September 13, 2023)………Circle City Raceway presents a smorgasbord of opportunities this Friday night, September 15, in Indianapolis, Ind.
For fans, it’s the final central Indiana race of the year for the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship, and that key word “Championship” is more prevalent than ever this time of the year for drivers and teams with a tight point race on the board with a mere seven events remaining.
It’s time to make a final push before the curtain falls on 2023, from the top of the title race to those wanting to make a final splash to close the season on a sweet note and to make a lasting impression going into the fall and winter months.
It’s also time to run through the storylines we’re all going to be tuned into for this Friday’s showdown in the Circle City.
BATTLE ROYALE BETWEEN GRANT & BACON
First and foremost, as we enter the latter stages of the season, the race for the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship becomes top of mind.
The point lead has switched hands 13 times this season among six different drivers. In comparison, in the three-year span between 2020-22, the series point lead changed only 11 times between six drivers. Needless to say, this has already become one of the fiercest title fights in series history, and we’re still a full seven events from the finish line.
Reigning champ Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) took over the lead after last week’s series venture to Texas and Arkansas, and now leads four-time titlist Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, Okla.) by a mere nine-point margin.
Neither driver has won before at Circle City in USAC National Sprint Car competition. Both drivers have come close, however, with each collecting best results of second place along the way. Grant did so in July of 2022 and Bacon followed suit in September of 2022. Grant has recorded a pair of fast qualifying times at Circle City this season alone while Bacon won the first ever sprint car race run at Circle City in 2021, sanctioned by MSCS.
CUMMINS IS ROCK STEADY AT CIRCLE CITY
No driver of late has been as consistently successful at Circle City as Kyle Cummins has, especially this year. In three starts at the 1/4-mile dirt oval this season, the Princeton, Ind. driver has yet to finish outside the top-two.
In May, he finished as the runner-up to Jake Swanson before reeling off two-straight triumphs in May and again in July. He could become the second driver this season to pull off the rare feat of winning three-straight at a single track.
Tom Bigelow is the only driver to win three consecutive USAC National Sprint Car features at a dirt track in Indianapolis, doing so in succession at the Indiana State Fairgrounds during the 1977 campaign.
WESTFALL ON THE CLIMB
Matt Westfall pulled off one of the most popular victories in recent USAC National Sprint Car history last weekend in the series debut at Arkansas’ Texarkana 67 Speedway.
There, the veteran racer burst from third to first on the opening lap, then carried onward to a dominant victory, his first with the series in more than 17 seasons!
The Pleasant Hill, Ohio driver hopes his next victory takes a little less time to achieve than the last. After all, his previous best finish of the season with the series before last Saturday came right at Circle City Raceway when he advanced from his ninth starting spot to finish fifth.
SWANSON & MORE LURKING AGAIN
Four drivers have finished inside the top-10 in all three of their USAC National Sprint Car starts this season at Circle City.
The aforementioned Cummins has finished inside the top-two in all three while C.J. Leary (Greenfield, Ind.) has earned a 7th, 9th and 9th in three appearances along with a fast qualifying time in July and is wheeling a car for the same BGE Dougherty Motorsports team which won the Fall Circle City event a year ago in 2022.
Top series Rookie Daison Pursley (Locust Grove, Okla.) has excelled at Circle City this year, pocketing a 9th, 6th and a 10th in three tries with his KO Motorsports team.
However, only one other driver besides Cummins has raced to multiple top-two results at Circle City in 2023, that being Jake Swanson. The Anaheim, Calif. racer won the first night in May, then finished as the runner-up to Cummins the following night. In July, he returned to finish 8th and looks to add on to his tally which already features four wins in what has been a career-best year on the national tour.
FULL CIRCLE IN THE CIRCLE CITY
Not many times does one get a chance to compete at a track on four different occasions in one calendar year. But that’s what is on the docket this Friday for USAC National Sprint Car drivers at Circle City.
Many drivers have shown flashes of brilliance at the southeast side Indy oval this year and look to position themselves as a winner come this weekend.
Shane Cottle (Kansas, Ill.) charged from 12th to 3rd at Circle City back in July. Emerson Axsom (Franklin, Ind.) possesses a pair of 4th place finishes in each of his past two tries there this season. Bacon finished 3rd on back-to-back nights in May. Robert Ballou (Rocklin, Calif.) led both May races for a total of 14 laps and finished 5th and 7th there this year.
Logan Seavey (Sutter, Calif.) posted his best USAC National Sprint Car result of the season with a runner-up finish in July. Chase Stockon (Fort Branch, Ind.) put up an 8th and a 7th, both in May while Grant took fourth back in May.

😍43 USAC SILVER CROWN ENTRIES FOR SATURDAY’S BETTENHAUSEN 100
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
Springfield, Illinois (August 14, 2023)………One of the largest fields in recent USAC Silver Crown history is set for battle during the 60th running of the Bettenhausen 100 Presented By Hunt Brothers Pizza this Saturday, August 19, at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
The entry list of 43 entries for Saturday’s race on the Springfield Mile are tied for the most cars to appear in any USAC Silver Crown event since 2005. The 2018 Bettenhausen 100 also featured a lineup of 43 cars and drivers.
Among this year’s crop are five past Bettenhausen 100 winners: reigning race champion Shane Cockrum of Benton, Ill. (2022), three-time victor Kody Swanson of Kingsburg, Calif. (2014-15-21), two-time winner A.J. Fike of Galesburg, Ill. (2012-13), plus single time winners Russ Gamester of Peru, Ind. (1998) and Justin Grant of Ione, Calif. (2017).
Current point leader Kody Swanson is a seven-time USAC Silver Crown champion, one of three past series titlists in the field along with Grant and Jerry C***s Jr. (Tucson, Ariz.).
A total of 11 past USAC Silver Crown main event winners are in Saturday’s field. Six of those individuals are seeking their first triumph at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Among those in that category are series runner-up Logan Seavey (Sutter, Calif.), C.J. Leary (Greenfield, Ind.), Chris Urish (Elkhart, Ill.) and Aaron Pierce (Muncie, Ind.) along with Shane Cottle (Kansas, Ill.) who’ll make his debut for the Chris Dyson Racing team, which captured the 2021 Bettenhausen 100 with Kody Swanson at the wheel.
Two women are in Saturday’s field with Taylor Ferns (Shelby Township, Mich.) making her return to the Bettenhausen 100 lineup after a 10-year absence. Kaylee Bryson (Muskogee, Okla.) put on a show a year ago at Springfield, leading a race-high 72 laps before finishing 5th.
Although not a Bettenhausen 100 Rookie, Bryson is the leading USAC Silver Crown Rookie of the Year contender in 2023, entering Saturday’s race third overall in the series standings. She’s one of 14 Silver Crown Rookies in 2023 who are in this weekend’s field along with USAC National feature winners Emerson Axsom (Franklin, Ind.), Mitchel Moles (Raisin City, Calif.) and Dave Peperak (Clinton, Ind.).
Chase Dietz (York, Pa.) will make his first dirt mile appearance at Springfield with the USAC Silver Crown series following a runner-up finish in his series debut at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway in June along with fellow series newcomers Wayne Johnson (Oklahoma City, Okla.), Matt Mitchell (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Trey Burke (Alvin, Texas), Gary Dunkle (Lincoln, Neb.), Cary Oliver (Buncombe, Ill.), Ryan Thomas (Indianapolis, Ind.), Mitchell Davis (Auburn, Ill.), John Tosti (High Ridge, Mo.) and Tim Simmons (Cabot, Ark.).

Would sure love to hear what's being said between Mario and AJ in this shot from the 1966 Hoosier Hundred. AJ looks upset, and someone is reaching in to calm him. Mario's twin, Aldo, is laughing, and Mario seems to be on the verge. This was the year AJ lost to Mario because his brake pedal broke with two laps to go while leading. When Foyt told the interviewer, what had happened, Mario quipped, "Why do you need brakes?" This is the moment that exchange happened, according to Bill Marvel who provided the photo. CIRCLE CITY RACEWAY TO HOST 2 OF 4 USAC EVENTS ACROSS 4 NIGHTS IN INDIANA
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
Speedway, Indiana (May 23, 2023)………The busiest stretch of USAC National racing so far this year arrives this week in Indy leading into Sunday’s 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 and Circle City Raceway, at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Indianapolis has two of those nights, Wednesday and Thursday.
USAC racing boasts four events across four nights on both dirt and pavement tracks in the state of Indiana featuring both the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship Terre Haute and Indianapolis as well as the USAC Silver Crown National Championship in Brownsburg.
Leading off the flurry of activity is the longest annually held USAC National Sprint Car event – the Tony Hulman Classic – which competes for the 53rd consecutive year on Tuesday night, May 23, at the Terre Haute Action Track’s dirt half-mile. Three past Hulman Classic winners are in this Tuesday’s lineup: Kevin Thomas Jr. (2017), Chase Stockon (2019) and Robert Ballou (2015-16-17) who’ll attempt to become the event’s first four-time winner.
USAC National Sprint Car action doesn’t slow down as the series heads toward the southeast side of Indianapolis for two-straight nights at Circle City Raceway’s quarter-mile dirt oval on Wednesday, May 24, and Thursday, May 25, for the Circle City Salute. Three previous series’ events have been held at the venue over the past two seasons with two of the three winners vying to become the track’s first multi-time USAC victor, C.J. Leary and Kevin Thomas Jr.
On May 26, it’s Friday night under the lights for the USAC Silver Crown National Championship on the asphalt of Brownsburg, Indiana’s .686-mile Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. It’s a rare treat for fans of the series as the race will consist of 146 laps and 100 miles during the renewal of the Hoosier Hundred for the 66th running of the event which will take place as part of the Carb Night Classic festivities featuring four divisions of racing in one night: USAC Silver Crown, USF Pro Championships Presented By Cooper Tires, USF Pro 2000 Presented By Cooper Tires and Pavement Midgets.
The race marks the first time the Hoosier Hundred has been held on pavement. Kody Swanson (2014-15-16-18) and Jerry C***s Jr. (2011-12) are the lone past two winners of the event at the Indiana State Fairgrounds dirt mile. Coming in as past Carb Night Classic winners are Tanner Swanson (2016 & 2020), Kody Swanson (2017-18-21) and Bobby Santos (2022).
