Halfacre Farms at Armadillo Acres

Halfacre Farms is a family farm that produces locally grown chicken, eggs and produce.

We raise poultry, ducks and rabbits on pasture to produce the finest, tastiest meat and eggs like you remember getting off the farm.

This place feels like it should today, which is wonderful.

The Catshier at firmly, but politely explained the return policy on red tagged items. Purrfect.

This was at ten o'clock last night. I went to feed the farm cats and they were interrupted by some opportunistic muscovies!

Need a tasty, quick breakfast that will get you to lunch without feeling like you're starving?

This is a regular quick breakfast around here.

Put a ridiculous amount of ghee in a hot pan, then sautee chopped peppers, green onions tomatoes and ham until the tomatoes have all but evaporated and the peppers are just getting tender. Add way too many eggs and pull the mix from the edges to the center as the scrambled eggs firm up. The goal is not to brown the eggs.

Top with hot sauce and cracked pepper and enjoy!

We have eggs and sauce in or store at Halfacre-Farms.com!

Enjoy, and don't overthink it!

The nectar is flowing and the whole tree is one continuous buzz of busy bees. We think this linden is as old as the farm.

This is one of our go-to meals: scrambled duck eggs and Fareway Stores smoked pork loin topped with cheese and HoQ restaurant hot sauce, which is available in our store: https://app.barn2door.com/halfacre-farms/all

I wrote a kind of heavy hearted column for the Iowa Farm Companion and this was my fortune tonight.

Making Tough Choices about Health, Happiness, and Chickens - Bluedot Living 06/06/2024

My latest column is published, and it's some tough sleddin'.

Making Tough Choices about Health, Happiness, and Chickens - Bluedot Living Aging parents, avian flu, and health issues complicate plans for the farm. Joe Villines updates us on everything happening on the farm.

This is why we put down all the wood chips. This, and many other reasons. The birds spend most of their time scratching through the composting chips in our walkways, their bedding and the actual compost pile.

We use the chips for walkways so we're out of the mud, even after heavy rain. The walkways form a little berm to catch and slow runoff so it can soak in.

Fungi colonize our chips everywhere they are and start making them available to the soil and plants.

On occasion, we even put them around our trees to help keep w**d competition down!

For some reason it's a great afternoon for digging holes in the path.

05/19/2024

It's a good day for a dust bath, apparently. I am also covered in dirt and ready to call it a night!

After collecting this morning's eggs and using what we have in the cooler, this lonely six are all that's left! Thank you for your business, patience and encouragement!

We may have overdone it a little today, but we won't know for sure until tomorrow morning when it's almost impossible to get out of bed.

The mission was accomplished, eggs were washed, animals were fed and these little minions are resting comfortably in a new brooder.

Good night!

Have we mentioned lately just how much we love it out here?

So many eggs, yet never enough to meet the demand. We're expecting the new girls to lay steady, quality eggs very soon!
