What the $ #!% does AHA & BHA mean?!? Thats what goes through my mind when i look up things to incorperate in my skin care routine. Fear not bestie, I'm here to break down what is what and what it may benefit.

AHA: Short for Alpha Hydroxy Acid is derived from a natural substance like sugar cane, milk, almonds, or grapes. A common example of an AHA is glycolic acid, which actually accelerates collagen production in the skin. AHA’s are the smallest of the hydroxy acids so they can pe*****te the skin really easily to help shed old skin. To do this, they essentially break down the “glue” holding your skin cells together, urging along the skin’s natural shedding process. If you have skin concerns like red marks from past acne, hyperpigmentation, or sun damage, using AHA’s is super helpful in increasing the production of new skin cells.

BHA: Short for Beta Hydroxy Acid, BHA’s are similar to AHA’s but are oil soluble. While AHAs love water, BHAs love oil. They can. better pe*****te the skin via oil glands dissolve the mix of sebum and dead skin that leads to acne, as well as stabilize the lining of the pore (which contributes to acne). This makes them ideal for people that have oily skin, since they can pe*****te the surface through big oily, open pores. BHAs clear up blackheads, whiteheads, and have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The most common BHA is salicylic acid.

I love my acne! SAID NO ONE EVER!

Knowing the difference between what kind of acne you have will save you time and energy so you can kiss your pizza face goodbye!

1. Black Heads - Start out similar to any other pimple: Skin debris mixes with sebum (the natural oil in your skin) clogging your pores. What makes blackheads different is that the pore is open to the air. Oxygen from the air triggers a chemical reaction — oxidation — with the material in your pore, causing it to turn black, says Young McMahan MD, FAAD, board-certified dermatologist with U.S. Dermatology Partners.

2. White Heads - Are similar to blackheads except instead of being open to the air, the pore is closed off by a layer of skin.

3. Nodules - Develops when the pores deeper down in the skin are plugged by dead skin cells and oil. This results in a large, deep lesion that may be visible on the surface if it's inflamed. If they continue to grow larger, they can become a nodule cyst, which is usually painful.

4. Cystic acne - Is considered the most serious type of acne. Similar to nodules, cysts are caused by clogged pores beneath the surface of the skin. They contain fluid or pus, and they may appear large, red, and are typically painful.
