3D Printing.

An article recently from NASDAQ stated that 3d printers could help with the semiconductor shortage crisis. Efforts to ramp up production are underway, with the Biden administration and private companies working to tackle the problem. However, industries are still looking for other solutions; this is where 3D metal printing comes into the picture.
Semiconductor fabrication plants (also known as “fabs”) work at the nanometer scale (one billionth of a meter). The technology does not exist to print the tiny pieces that make up the chips themselves. While my company has developed ways for customers to design and create previously “impossible” geometries, 3D printing works at the 1/10th of a millimeter scale.

3D metal printing allows for many parts to be completed quickly. 3D printers can make a difference by servicing fabs & creating state-of-the-art components; Any factory working this complex will need replacement parts. Semiconductor companies can design elements to make the new facilities more powerful, with fewer failures and improved reliability.

ASML CEO says some companies are ripping out chips from washing machines 04/21/2022

The chip shortage and why you should care.

Semiconductors are very tiny, seemingly insignificant to our daily lives. Yet, that couldn't be further from the truth. We rely on those small chips to run our cellphones, cars, computers, tv, etc. "These advanced semiconductor chips are everything from your phone to the most advanced weapons systems in the United States government," Texas Senator McCaul said. The United States does not produce any of the most advanced semiconductor chips. Texas A&M supply chain consortium director, Xenophon Koufteros, said those are the tiniest chips — about 10 millimeters. So besides chips being used in our everyday lives, why should we be concerned with the ongoing shortage?

Well, this is why; what if China moves into Taiwan? If that happens, it will be a total disaster for us here, not just in the United States but also in the whole world. We won't be able to make any phones; we won't be able to make cameras; we won't be able to make medical devices. We'd have to shut down just about every industry.

Though supply is short, there is still an available supply around; take a look at our website and feel free to inquire further.(akiragi.com). Sources and summarized from an article by cw39

Chip shortage continues to affect the Automobile Industry.

I mentioned in my previous post that Ford was having production issues due to the shortage crisis we've been facing. BMW is now another company to add to the list. The chip shortage is expected to last through 2023, which will continue to cause car manufacturers issues. BMW's chief executive Zipes quotes, "We are still in the height of the chip shortage, I expect us to start seeing improvements at the latest next year, but we will still have to deal with a fundamental shortage in 2023." Volkswagon's CFO reiterated this comment.

I'm curious to see how many more car companies will be coming out about their production struggles in the future.

Ford Mustang to be short on stock.

Ford Motor Company & General Motors announced separately on Thursday that they'll be halting production at their Michigan Plants. The Flat Rock Assembly is where they produce The Mustang. The reason for the production halt is the ongoing chip shortage.

GM also mentioned that the part shortage at the Lansing Grand River Assembly would begin to cancel production too. At this plant, they produce several cars; Cadillac CT4, Cadillac CT5, and Chevrolet Camaro.

Car companies have been one of the victims of the chip shortage, forcing them to cut production down. Ford warned last month that the chip shortage would lead to a decline in vehicle volumes in the current quarter. Last month, Ford halted production at its Kansas City assembly plant that makes F-150 pickup vehicles for a week due to the chip shortage.

Senate votes in favor of Semi-conductor bill.

The Senate on Monday voted on a bill that would provide billions of dollars for high-tech research and production that would make the U.S. less dependent on computer chips from China. The vote was on the Senate's version of the House's America Competes for a bill passed earlier this year. A final Capital Hill vote could come as early as May or June. If this bill gets passed it will allow more jobs to be available and less reliance on China to access semi-conductors.

I’ve mentioned in previous posts that the chip shortage is projected to continue throughout 2022. Now, ASML, the keystone producer of the lithography machines used to make advanced semiconductor chips, has said that it anticipates a two-year shortage for the industry. This announcement has come at a time when chip manufacturers are looking to increase production as demands continue to climb.

Peter Wennink, CEO of ASM has said, “We’re going to ship more machines this year than last year and . . . more machines next year than this year. But it will not be enough if we look at the demand curve. We need to step up our capacity significantly by more than 50 percent. That will take time.”

The semiconductor market is expected to double in profit to $1 trillion by 2030, according to analysts. Shortages in vital machines mean that companies like Intel are already curtailing their growth expectations in the coming years.

In the specific case of Taiwan and TSMC, another reason that is often being overlooked for expanding production abroad is the island's relatively high seismic risk and limited supply of engineers and electricity for the massive investment that many of its semiconductor companies are planning.

All in all, chip shortages will ease slightly in 2022 with more production in Asia, but a massive wave of new supply will be on stream in 2023. Given that the bulk of that production will only be for mature node semiconductors, only higher-end chips will face shortages.

Ps5 Sales Fall Short.

Are you having issues obtaining the new PS5? Well, this might answer that.

Sony shipped 3.9 million PS5 or (PlayStation 5)consoles during its fiscal Q3 bringing the company’s total to 17.3 million PS5s shipped as of the end of 2021. While that is another strong number for one of the fastest-selling consoles ever, it is down from the 4.5 million Sony shipped during the same period last year. This shortcoming is due to supply-chain disruptions and component shortages. The company also expects these issues to continue.

To bring to light just how detrimental this decrease is look at the difference between the ps5 and the ps4. Demand for the PS5 is equal to or greater than that of the PS4 at this same time in its life cycle. But Sony had managed to ship 20.2 million PS4s through this same timeframe. This has nothing to do with an inability to sell the PS5s and has everything to do with an inability to source key components to make PS5s. Supply for the PS5 is so limited that Sony is revising its outlook for what it calls its “games and network services” division.

$500 billion

Despite the rising crisis of our semiconductor shortage, the revenue of manufacturing has passed the 500 billion dollar mark for the first time. Samsung Electronics regained the top spot from Intel for the first time since 2018, with revenue increasing 31.6 percent in 2021. The highest performing category has been memory due to the increased server deployments by hyper-scale cloud providers to satisfy remote working, learning, and entertainment needs, as well as a surge in end-market demand for PCs and ultramobile.

5G smartphone market has helped in the rise of revenue by doubling unit production, to reach 555 million in 2021, compared to 250 million in 2020. Meanwhile, HiSilicon, Huawei's chip subsidiary, saw revenue decline from $8.2 billion in 2020 to around $1 billion in 2021.
