With summer here, many college students are back home and enjoying their break, often socializing more frequently. However, this increased social activity can come with risks, especially if they begin engaging in altered eating behaviors while drinking alcohol.
Alarmingly, around 80% of young adults report eating less to offset the calories in alcohol. This behavior, which has the potential to lead to a condition referred to as "drunkorexia," can cause a series of serious medical complications.

As we dive into Alcohol Awareness Month, it's important to shed light on a concerning trend: Drunkorexia. This colloquial term refers to the restriction of eating to either accelerate the effects of alcohol or to offset the caloric value of the alcoholic beverages being consumed.
Drunkorexia is a dangerous behavior that combines disordered eating habits with alcohol abuse. By depriving our bodies of essential nutrients, we're putting our health at serious risk including:
1. Nutritional Deficiencies: Limiting energy intake can mean missing out on vital nutrients the body needs to function properly.
2. Increased Intoxication: Consuming alcohol on an empty stomach heightens intoxication, leading to impaired judgment.
3. Risk of Eating Disorders: Drunkorexia often overlaps with eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia.

Too often people wait to get help for an eating disorder, thinking that they are not sick enough for treatment or that they have too many responsibilities at home. However, early intervention is linked to better treatment outcomes.
A great first step towards getting help is having a conversation with a trusted healthcare provider like a family physician.

One of the biggest myths about eating disorders is that they only impact young women.
Eating disorders can impact anyone, at any stage of life. Misunderstandings like this can lead some to believe that they don‘t need treatment or that they can’t have an eating disorder.

From social media ads to a coworker touting the latest superfood, we’re all inundated with wellness trends and “miracle” cures. While some wellness trends have merit, others can do more harm than good to both our physical and mental health.

Some people get stuck in the line of thinking that to be healthy, they must follow an exercise program – even if they don’t enjoy it.
That’s not the case though, instead look for forms of movement that bring you joy!
Whether it's yoga, swimming, or simply jumping for joy on this Leap Day, prioritize activities that make you happy! Your well-being matters, and finding pleasure in movement is a key part of a healthy relationship with your body.
Even the best intentions around food and eating can become problematic if someone becomes overly focused on food and what they’re consuming.
Obsessions with the “perfect” diet can lead to dangerous complications including malnutrition and can even manifest into complex conditions including orthorexia.

There’s often a perception that everyone loves their body and that this is engrained in all of us. While body positivity is a wonderful aim, it’s something that can take time and effort to cultivate.
For some, body neutrality can be a more attainable goal – recognizing and appreciating the wonderful things the body can do.
This Eating Disorders Awareness Week, we’re debunking common myths around food, eating, and wellbeing. One common misconception is that a person’s BMI (body mass index) is an accurate indicator of their overall health.
No single metric can be used to assess this though, and health can be achieved by people of all sizes. Understanding this, we utilize the Health at Every Size (HAES) model at Koru Spring to provide inclusive and holistic care.
