Bowl # 411 is another sphere-ish-shaped bowl. The black walnut from the Bybee Estate has such amazing deep wavy grain patterns and the spherical shape makes it shimmer a little when you turn it in your hands.

Stop by to see it shimmer in person this week!

5 inches diameter by 4 1/2 inches tall (almost a sphere)

Bowl # 409 is some beautiful black locust from the . It may actually be half way between a plate and a bowl with mostly straight sides and smaller bottom. Overall, I like the shape.

$50 - Black Locust from The McCully House in Jacksonville Oregon
9 inches diameter by 1 3/4 inches tall

Stop by this weekend and take a look at my latest!

Bowl # 408 is another amazing piece of black walnut from the Bybee Estate in Central Point Oregon. Used as a doorstop for quite a few months, I finally decided it was time to make it into something. Its smooth sloping edge emphasizes the figuring and the swirling grain pattern from the majestic black walnut. Do you see anything in the bottom of the bowl?

10 inches in diameter by 2 1/4 inches tall.

Bowl # 406 is a clean and simple shape to show off the great coloring of this piece of black walnut.

Bowl # 405 has a small secret message under the edge. This message is actually bug damage that has been filled with coffee grounds but it looks like a long-forgotten script.

7 inches diameter by 2 3/4 inches tall

Bowl # 398 is the second piece from the oak sourced from . The ryes lines from the oak turned out great on this one. Coffee grounds compliment the natural dark knots and cracks of the oak after it has dried.

Bowl # 397 is special because the oak was collected from an amazing retreat in the Sonoma County Redwoods in California. I was fortunate enough to go there earlier this year for a yoga retreat with my wife and two of our good friends. It was an amazing experience that I highly recommend. While we were there, I asked if I could take a piece of wood from the firewood pile to make them some bowls. They of course said yes and this is what I made. I'm extremely happy with how well the lichens and moss stayed on the bark!

Number 407 is unlike anything else I have done in the past. My goal was to create something that emphasizes the organic feel of the black walnut and resembles wine glasses in a garden. The bottom half is a bowl that I cut in half and drilled some holes in it to hold the stems of the flowers. Each flower has the bark from the black walnut log carefully preserved.

Please let me know what you think about this one. I love the way it turned out but I don't think I will make more like it.

About 10 inches tall by 8 inches wide.

Bowl # 402 is more of a globe than a bowl. My original plan was to make a much wider top but as I started carving it I found the amazing bark. This discovery changed my plan to bring the top in and emphasize the bark that curves around the outside of the log. The drying process gave it even better texture and depth.

Cup # 401 is smaller than most of my work, only 3 1/2 inches tall. My favorite part is the cracks on the side that look like claw marks. (Sorry, they are not emphasized in the photo very well) I think I will name this one "Tiger Strike" which oddly enough will be my code name the next time I'm on a reconnaissance mission to rescue some logs from the firewood pile.

Bowl # 404 is more of the black walnut from Carter Ranch in Jacksonville. This is one of the larger bowls from that batch of wood at 10 1/2 across the top by 5 inches tall. This bowl has a different shape that made it much harder to sand than I expected.

$155 - Black Walnut from Carter Ranch in Jacksonville
10 1/2 in diameter by 5 inches tall.

Bowl # 403 had quite a few cracks around the bark in the center of the bowl but it looks amazing after filling with coffee grounds. I am frequently asked how I burn the edges when people see the live edge black walnut bowls. Surprisingly, a little bit of walnut oil darkens and protects the bark so that it looks burnt or charred.

Bowl # 396 is a clean simple tipped edge and classically shaped bowl from black walnut. The three colors of vanilla, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate are a great contrast. It is finished with linseed oil and beeswax so you could eat ice cream from it but you will need to put more beeswax on it frequently.

$95 - Black walnut 10 1/4 across by 3 inches tall.

Photos from Wood Bowls by Chris's post 07/16/2024

Bowl # 395 has a single gentle curve with no visible bottom edge to compliment the stark black-and-white pattern of the wood. Surprisingly, this is from a single piece of black walnut and the coloring is natural.

$95 - Black walnut 7 inches across the top by 5 inches tall.

Bowl # 394 has a distinct mountain peak and moon that looks to be painted. I curled the top edge in to add a couple more peaks to the scene. It is so gratifying when I can coax something like this out of a piece of wood.

Sold - Black walnut 9 1/2 inches across by 3 1/2 inches tall.

Number 393 is more like a large cup than a bowl. I had planned on making a deep vase with legs when I started but as I saw the grain patterns decided that I needed to leave the bottom more flat. You never know what you are going to find with the spalted maple.

$150 - Spalted maple 6 1/2 inches across the top by 8 inches tall.

Photos from Wood Bowls by Chris's post 07/13/2024

Bowl # 391 has a wonderful crack from when the branch broke off the tree in a snowstorm. The crack has beautiful discoloring from water damage making it look like lightning across the side. It is now safely sealed with coffee grounds to preserve it for many years.

$95 - Black walnut 8 3/4 inches across the top by 4 inches tall

Bowl # 392 is my first made from English walnut. This particular piece has some great freckles that were made from woodpeckers many years ago. All of the bark stayed firmly attached and the English walnut sands to a very nice smooth finish.

$135 - 7 1/2 across the top by 6 inches tall.

Plate # 390 started as a test piece from a batch of black walnut. It started with a sizable crack that grew as it dried but I liked the coloring so much I filled the crack and finished sanding it.

$40 - 8 1/2 inches across by 1 1/2 inches tall.

Photos from Wood Bowls by Chris's post 06/21/2024

Bowl # 399 is taller than I had originally planned but this height shows off the grain patterns of the black locust nicely. Big thank you to the for the beautiful wood! There were quite a few cracks to fill with coffee grounds but they look great all sealed up and sanded smooth.

$120 - 6 1/2 inches tall by 6 inches across the top.

Number 374 has a nice large bottom which makes it sit nicely. This piece of mahogany had quite a few holes from woodpeckers and the bumpy bark that I filled with coffee grounds. You can see them as the jet black spots throughout the sides of the cup.

This cup has already sold.

Number 376 is one of only two of the mountain mahogany cups not sold. This one is the smallest of all the cups and the first one that I made. It does not have a live edge and all of the cracks in the cup part have been filled with coffee grounds. The wax finish gives it a velvety feel and brings out the colors of mahogany so nicely!

$35 - 3 1/2 inches tall by 2 1/2 inches across the top.

Plates 383, 384, 385, and 386 are all from the same piece of black locust. Almost identical in size and height, this is an amazing set, perfect for charcuterie or bread plates.

$25 each - 7 1/2 inches diameter by 3/4 inches tall.

Introducing ‘Soulwood’ – the 375th masterpiece in my collection, crafted with love from mahogany from historic Jacksonville Cemetery, Oregon. This cup’s edge is a perfect live edge polished to perfection with a blend of walnut oil and beeswax. It’s not just a cup; it’s a piece of history with a soulful touch.

$55 - 4 1/4 inches tall by 3 1/2 inches diameter at the base.

I don't do plates very often but this piece of maple had such amazing spalting I decided it would look best as a set of 4 plates. They are almost exactly the same size and you can see the grain patterns progress through each plate if you order them correctly.

This one sold the first day I had it displayed.

Number 373 is named "Cemetery Sipper". This is another cup from the amazing mahogany from the Jacksonville Cemetery. I managed to save most of a branch on the bottom which gives it a great organic look.

This piece has already sold but there are two more still left at Don't wait!

Finally got my shop insulated with new lighting and some beautiful plywood walls! It will likely never be this clean again.

A good friend was kind enough to let me collect some huge pieces of black walnut from a tree that needed to be removed for construction. It was about 40 inches in diameter and was a pain to cut. This is my first platter from it at 27 inches across. I'm trying out a new design for this one, let me know if you like it. It has not been sanded and is just rough-turned so far.

Number 376 is another piece of mahogany from the Jacksonville Cemetery. I like the extra flourish on the bottom and top of this one from the branches.

This has already sold but there are a few more very similar at
