Five killed and suspect shot dead after stabbing attack at Sydney shopping centre...FIVE PEOPLE ARE dead following stabbings at a shopping centre near Australia’s Bondi beach.

Their attacker was shot dead by a police officer responding to the incident and several other people have been brought to hospital with serious injuries.

Eight people including a child have been taken to hospital after the incident.

It occurred at the sprawling Westfield Bondi Junction mall complex, near Bondi Beach, which was packed with afternoon shoppers.

Dozens of police vehicles remain at the scene of the shopping centre.

In a press briefing held in the past hour, police said that from preliminary inquiries, it appears the offender “acted alone” and that “there is no continuing threat”.

The motive of the attacker was not immediately clear.

“There’s nothing that we’re aware of that would indicate any motive or any ideology,” Assistant Commissioner for New South Wales police Anthony Cooke said in the briefing, which was streamed online. Asked by a local reporter whether “terrorism” was a possible motive, Cooke said: “We’re not ruling anything out.”

Cooke added: “I do not have information in relation to the offender – I do not know, at this stage, who he is, you would understand this is quite raw.”

He outlined how a lone officer who responded had tracked the assailant through the shopping centre.

“This all happened very, very quickly – the officer that was in the vicinity attended on her own, was guided to the location of the offender by people who were in the centre.

“She took the actions that she did saving a range of people’s lives; (she was) an inspector, a senior police officer – she was on her own. She engaged immediately on her arrival to the scene.

“I don’t have any indication of any motivation coming from the scene at all.”

WASHINGTON, April 9 (Reuters) - The United States does not have evidence that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza as it carries out its war against Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told a Senate hearing on Tuesday.
"We don't have evidence of that," Austin told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's subsequent military assault on Hamas-governed Gaza has displaced nearly all its 2.3 million population and led to genocide allegations that Israel denies. Joshua Merenfeld, 40, told NBC New York he was standing outside of his building when a man walked up behind him, punched him, pushed him over, kicked him and then took his phone.

"It was a real beating," Merenfeld said. "It wasn't just one punch and left, it took quite a while. At least a minute of punches which is a long time for punches."

The man who attacked Merenfeld "used a bunch of antisemitic terminology and profanities," he said.

The suit was filed under the Adult Survivors Act, a special state law that created a yearlong suspension of the usual time limit for accusers to sue. The law is set to expire after Thanksgiving.

The 41 construction workers who have been trapped in a collapsed tunnel in northern India for over a week are finally getting hot meals Tuesday, provided through a newly installed steel pipe, as rescuers work on an alternate plan of digging toward them vertically.
The meals, made of rice and lentils, were sent through a 6-inch pipe pushed through the rubble late Monday, said Deepa Gaur, a government spokesperson.

The Crown has returned for its sixth and final season, and for the first time since the show began, this season does not open on an event where Queen Elizabeth is the focal point, it opens instead on the car crash that killed Princess Diana.

That feels like an important and deliberate distinction, because as the show moves into the summer of 1997, there was no royal story more important that Diana, her presence had essentially commandeered the news cycle, as this first episode of the season illustrates, a reality that was both frustrating for the rest of the royal family, and tragic, since you can either directly or indirectly blame the media for her death. (Look, I’ve certainly watched enough conspiracy theory documentaries about her final night to go either way.)

A 5-year-old British boy died after trying to climb into a life-size helium balloon shaped like a dinosaur, according to a coroner who called it “every parent’s nightmare.”
Karlton Donaghey was given the balloon in June 2022 at a fair in Newcastle-upon-Tyne where he went with his parents, Lisa and Karl, the Mirror reported.

Once home, he decided to climb into the helium-filled balloon, which was as large as him, to pretend to be a dinosaur, an inquest into his death was told.

His mother found him unresponsive 10 minutes later and rushed him to a hospital, where he died six days later.
He became quickly overcome by the helium and despite prompt rescue, he suffered a hypoxic brain injury and subsequently died in hospital on 29th June 2022,” assistant coroner James Thompson wrote.
