📝3 questions for figuring out your podcast’s audience 📝
In consulting sessions with experienced podcasters, one of the most common frustrations is a lack of listeners.
Whether you’re still in the planning stages of your podcast, or you’ve been putting episodes out for months, this exercise can help you! ✨Save this post and refer back to it often.✨
📝Get a bunch of sticky notes, some markers, and a blank wall or table.
📝You’ll create 3 columns, one for each question. On each post-it note, write one answer/characteristic/idea— make as many posts as you want!
1️⃣ Who do I want to listen? Get specific! Gender, age, profession, hobbies, relationship status, style, personality— it’s all valuable.
2️⃣ Why would they want to listen? Think of the problem(s) they might have that you have the solution(s) for— even if that problem is “I want to be entertained on my commute.”
3️⃣ Where are they (and how do I reach them)? These answers could be social media platforms, professional organizations, newsletter subscribers, clients, or even family and friends. Go back to #1 and think about where those people spend their time, and ways you can meet them where they already are.
📝Even if your podcast is already established, it’s never too late to make tweaks that will better serve your specific audience. And if you’re just starting out, knowing who you want to reach will make your production and marketing process easier, more enjoyable, and more motivating!
Feeling inspired? Gather up your post-its and markers, and start brainstorming!
The number one hang-up I hear from people who want to start a podcast is, “I don’t think I have time.”
What I think they’re saying is not that they don’t have time to start, but they don’t have time to sustain a podcast.
Many people view podcasts as a weekly commitment, which then takes on the same feel as eating vegetables or exercising daily or reading more non-fiction before bed-- very much a New Year’s Eve resolution that fizzles out by February.
When people say “I don’t think I have time,” what they’re thinking is, “I want to start a podcast but then I have to do it every week until I die, and I don’t think I want to devote time to that.”
The solution? A sustainable release schedule! Or as I now like to think of it, meal prepping your podcast.

Creating a Sustainable Podcast — Yellow Armadillo Studios Last month, my sister came to visit. I’ve had a busy and stressful summer, and she wanted to help lighten my load. So she spent a whole day in my kitchen, making chicken pot pies, sweet potato soup, and cilantro lime chicken-- then she stuck it all in my freezer. When my husband and I are too tire...

You Have To Try — Yellow Armadillo Studios When I was in first grade, my mom got a call from my teacher. That’s rarely a good sign, but I wasn’t misbehaving. Instead, a weirder issue had presented itself: I was turning in blank spelling tests. When my mom and dad sat down with me to ask what was going on, I said I wasn’t sure it would ...

For the past couple of months, I've been working with food justice advocates Hannah Semler and Ali Berlow on their amazing podcast, "What Is American Food?"
The most recent episode tells the story of Covilli Brand Organics, the only 100% fair trade and 100% organic food distributor in North America.
I've learned so much about the food system in the U.S., and have a new appreciation for all of the hands that get my fresh produce to me.

Why me?
I’ve loved podcasts for over a decade. Being from Colorado and attending college in Kansas City, I spent a lot of hours in the car driving across Kansas, listening to This American Life and Stuff You Should Know. When I moved to Washington, DC, podcasts were a necessary part to my commute-- shows like Serial, Criminal, and 99% Invisible.
But I didn’t think I could have a career in audio until one day, it seemed like the only choice. I was working in the photography department at National Geographic. I’d been assigned to write a piece accompanying photos of people fleeing wildfires in Canada. I called each of these survivors to hear of their escape and what they planned to do next, with only the belongings that could fit in their cars. As I listened to them, I could tell that whatever I wrote would fall flat. Because of my incessant podcast listening, I realized that what was missing from my written words was the emotion and passion that can only be found in someone’s voice.
Shortly after that I applied and was accepted to the Transom.org Story Workshop in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. It’s sleepaway camp for wannabe producers, and the teachers boast that it has a more exclusive acceptance rate than Harvard. I spent 9 weeks on Cape Cod learning the ins and outs of radio production-- how to operate a mic and recorder, how to edit audio, how to conduct an interview, how to incorporate music in an audio piece. It was life-changing. When I got back to DC, I quit my job at National Geographic and set out to freelance.
Since then, I’ve worked primarily on talk shows-- niche podcasts about the Supreme Court, a nationally-broadcast NPR show, and a daily, local talk show that covered the arts and culture scene in Kansas City. It’s harder than it sounds to have an engaging conversation meant for a wide audience-- and I pride myself on coaching and prepping hosts to carry on those conversations. I also get a thrill out of editing audio to make it as listenable as possible for the audience-- think cutting out sirens, barking dogs, humming air conditioners, and screaming children. If I’ve done my job right, you won’t think about me at all.
I founded Yellow Armadillo Studios in the fall of 2020, after the COVID-19 pandemic ended my public radio job as a daily talk show producer. Why Yellow Armadillo? It’s a long story about a family inside joke, but what I want you to remember is this: I believe in tough conversations with a soft underbelly.
Some haters say there are too many podcasts, but I disagree. If you want to share your voice, let’s do it together. You don’t have to want to get rich or get acquired— just wanting to speak is enough of a reason. My focus will always be on you and your story— and on helping you connect with the audience you want to hear it.
