**🖤 Black Maternal Mental Health Week 🖤**

As we observe Black Maternal Mental Health Week, we are reminded of the importance of advocating for the mental and physical well-being of Black mothers. This week, we honor the strength and resilience of Black mothers everywhere, while also acknowledging the systemic challenges they face.

Today, we mourn the tragic loss of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black mother who was fatally shot in her home after calling 911 for help. Sonya's death is a stark reminder of the urgent need for systemic change to protect and support Black women, especially those experiencing mental health crises.

At Melanated Maternal Therapy, we are committed to providing a safe space for Black mothers to receive the mental health care they deserve. We stand in solidarity with Sonya Massey's family and all those affected by similar tragedies. Let us continue to advocate for justice, equity, and comprehensive mental health support for Black mothers.

**Self-Care Tips for Black Mothers:**
1. **Prioritize Rest:** Make time for adequate sleep and rest. Your body and mind need it to function at their best.
2. **Stay Connected:** Reach out to friends, family, or support groups. Sharing your experiences can provide comfort and reduce feelings of isolation.
3. **Practice Mindfulness:** Engage in activities like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to help manage stress and stay grounded.
4. **Set Boundaries:** It's okay to say no and prioritize your own needs. Protect your energy and well-being.
5. **Seek Professional Help:** Don't hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional if you're feeling overwhelmed. Therapy is a powerful tool for healing and growth.

Join us in raising awareness and pushing for change. Together, we can make a difference. 💪🏾🖤

I am so honored and excited to announce that Melanated Maternal Therapy has been identified as a perinatal safe spot!

WHAT IS A PERINATAL SAFE SPOT?
A Perinatal Safe Spot is a physical or virtual space, or both – a place where women and families can safely connect and find support.

A Perinatal Safe Spot is also a place to utilize the four tenets of The JJ Way® model of care which enable ANYBODY who cares to make a positive difference in a pregnant or parenting woman’s life.

The tenets are to provide ACCESS, CONNECTIONS, KNOWLEDGE and EMPOWERMENT in order to increase the opportunities for a positive birth outcome.

Happy Juneteenth!

I am heartbroken and outraged by the news of Tori Bowie’s death. She was a phenomenal athlete, a trailblazer, and a inspiration to many. She deserved to live and to enjoy motherhood. Her death is not only a personal tragedy, but also a national disgrace. Black women are dying from pregnancy-related complications at three to four times the rate of white women in the United States2. This is unacceptable and preventable. We need to demand better care, better policies, and better research to address this crisis.

As a Black perinatal therapist, I am committed to supporting Black women’s mental health and well-being during pregnancy and beyond. I know how stressful, scary, and lonely it can be to navigate the health care system as a Black woman. I also know how resilient, powerful, and beautiful we are. We deserve to be seen, heard, and respected. We deserve to thrive.
If you are a Black woman who is pregnant or planning to become pregnant, please know that you are not alone.

Please reach out to me if you need any assistance or guidance. I am here for you. You matter. Your life matters. Your baby matters.

Rest in power, Tori Bowie. You will never be forgotten.

This weekend, there might be a lot of emphasis on baby. How is baby eating and sleeping? Is baby smiling or walking yet? In all the excitement, you might feel like you aren’t as important.

We want you to know you’re more than the vessel that carried and birthed a baby. You are so important, too.

If you’re looking for a community of parents who care about you and your well-being, reach out anytime. We are here for YOU.

Sometimes when truly terrible things happen, we don’t know what to do. What is the most effective action? How could one person help?

The fact is that many individuals, working together, are what create change.

If you don’t know what to do, please read about what happened to Ralph Yarl. Learn about who he is and why there is outrage. Then, make a phone call or email to the prosecutor, Zachary Thompson:

816-736-8300 (ext 8302)
[email protected]

Demand an immediate arrest and the appropriate charges.

Then, if you can, donate to Ralph’s GoFundMe for his medical expenses. https://www.gofundme.com/f/nf36y-cover-medical-expenses

, Ralph’s aunt, has more suggestions to support Ralph on her page.

We stand with Black families in KC and are committed to helping create a safer, more compassionate community.

Dr. Spoonmore, we as a board have been individually raising awareness and are taking a stand as an organization. We are here as support. We are here as a voice against this violence.
