Winter bike commuting tip
Winter bike commuting tip #3: Make your helmet windproof with packing tape.
Bicycle helmets with vents are great for keeping you cool in the summer. In the winter? Not so much.
Thanks again to Dave Reinert, owner of Bicycle Depot - KC for these tips! How do you stay warm on your winter bike commute?
Celebrating the holidays
The holiday decorations at @crowncenter and @unionstationkc never fail to wow us every year. The whole area is also well-served by transit, bikes and scooters, which makes us love it even more!
🚌 By bus: Take the Main Max or Route 201 RideKC bus to the Crown Center stops on Grand Boulevard. Routes 85, 47 and 27 also serve the area.
🚋 By streetcar: The KC Streetcar provides frequent stops outside of Union Station, connecting the area with the Crossroads, downtown Kansas City, Missouri and River Market.
🚲By bike: Take a RideKC Bike There’s a hub with plenty of bike parking right on Grand Boulevard at Crown Center.
🛴By scooter: Bird scooters are typically placed along Pershing Road by Washington Square Park and are great for filling any gaps in your trip.
What’s your favorite place to go during the holidays that’s accessible by sustainable transportation?
Holiday Season Green Commuting
Green commuting doesn’t have to stop when the temperatures drop. In fact, biking, riding transit or carpooling to work during the winter can provide that extra boost of energy when the holiday stress kicks in and vitamin D levels sink.
What is your favorite thing about green commuting in the winter?
Winter bike commuting tip #2
Winter bike commuting tip #2: Keep your face warm with a balaclava or gaiter
Your legs will typically be the warmest because they’re doing the most work, so focus on your face and feet. Thanks to Dave Reinert, owner of Bicycle Depot - KC for these tips! How do you stay warm on your winter bike commute?
Parents who use an e-bike
Sara ditched the drop-off/pick-up line at her kids' school in Shawnee and opted for a cargo e-bike instead.
❓Are you a parent who green commutes?
Bike commuting in cold weather
You don’t have to give up your bike commute as temperatures drop. We’ll be sharing a series of tips for riding to work during the colder months. Our first tip? Wear latex gloves and plastic bags under your gloves and socks for extra warmth and protection from chilly winds.
Last winter, we hosted a Winter Bike Commuting Workshop with Dave Reinert, owner of Bicycle Depot - KC. Dave had a wealth of great advice, including this one about keeping your hands and feet warm without spending hundreds of dollars on high-tech gear. What do you do to stay warm in the winter?
The WAY TO GO team had a blast making the 2023 Green Commute Challenge winning plaques at the Johnson County Maker Space at the Johnson County Library - KS. Thanks to the wonderful staff for their assistance with the laser cutter! We’ll be announcing the winners of this year’s challenge at Thursday’s finale party at Velo Garage and Tap House.
Do e-bikes have the power to transform how we get around in the Kansas City region? Ask an e-bike owner and there’s a good chance they’ll say, “Yes!” Last month, we joined up with RideKC Bike and BikeWalkKC to host an e-bike petting zoo at the Brookside Farmers' Market. Prospective e-bike owners had the chance to try out different models and talk to current owners about their experiences riding, commuting on and owning these bikes. ❓ Are you an e-bike owner? What’s been your experience owning one in the metro?

Nash
In honor of World Car Free Day, we wanted to bring back a bit of our conversation with Kansas City Public Library employee Nash, who rides the bus and bikes to work because he doesn’t own a car. Have you gone/would you go car-free?
