Kennesaw Mountain Chair Company strives to make the quality, handmade furniture that will become Family heirlooms. I am a small, uncomplicated, one man shop.
I Love Working Wood....
All the products, sawdust, and some times, some really crazy mistakes are made by me, Mike Lipper. I still sharpen my chisels to a hair cutting, razor sharpness. I cut and fit joinery by hand. I believe in handmade products that are made with real craftsmanship. All that takes a little longer, and provides a greater satisfaction, and better quality product. I want you to l
Who doesn’t like a good tailgate party?!
Thousand Hills Cattle Ranch has the best meat for the grill, and snack sticks to enjoy while watching the game! And…. The meat comes from the pasture right behind the house!!
Elevate your tailgate with one of our Pecan Wood Cutting/Charcuterie (or Seacuterie!) Boards
Handcrafted in Georgia by Kennesaw Mountain Chair Company each of our wooden cutting boards is a one-of-a-kind treasure. They include a carry handle for easy reach in the cupboard or to hang in the kitchen.
All boards are food grade, perfect for entertaining, and double sided for use or display. The Southern Pecan wood offers beautiful grain patterns of intricate lines and vibrant colors.
Boards are paired with Thousand Hills Cattle Ranch all-beef summer sausage, jellies, and a carving knife.
I took a big step today. I let them go……
The twin sized bed swing is mounted on a porch in Gainesville Ga.
After some rope stretching and several knot adjustments, it is set for some serious loafing on the porch! These porch swings were a nice challenge and really fun to build!
The desk top is complete! 2 white oak slabs, 2 1/4” thick x 84” long.
This was the most challenging project that I think I have ever built. It’s the only one that I have built that intentionally did not have any square sides (in order to fit precisely against the room walls).
It’s on its way to a beach house in Florida!
Big Bed Swing #6:
Look Mom! No clamps!
The bed swing is put together and everything fits! I really like the arms! Very stylish!
Next - take it apart for painting!
Big bed Swing update #5:
Everything fits. There is several adjustments for a better fit. Some trimming, and about a good 5-6 hours of sanding.
Drill some holes for bolts to mount the back to the base. Then prime again, sand some more, then sand some more. Then a final coat of paint, and a spray coat of poly.
Big Bed Swing update #4:
Back braces are lined up and marked.
Arms have mortice and tennons cut to hold the slats square and straight.
Arms are glued and screwed together.
What’s left:
Tomorrow I will cut the 2 upper and lower braces to mold the back slats
Drill 18 square mortice holes.
Drill holes to mount the back onto the base frame.
Cut dado joints to fit the top brace to fit into the back braces
Final assembly of the entire back.
Prime paint
Final paint
Finished coats of polyurethane
*Note: The bed will be delivered in 3 pieces (base frame, back, and both arms). At location, pieces will get assembled to a final assembly. Ideally I need to build it with hidden screws or minimal screws that will need plugged on final assembly.
I’m close!!
Big Bed Swing update #3:
The nice part of priming raw wood is that you just have to coat the wood…brush strokes are not an issue.
I’m good at applying a primer coat!
* Note: the ends that are not painted get glued and screwed together, thus they need to be unpainted…..
Big Bed Swing update #2:
This is the part that I really love.
I have a photo and a measurement of a mattress size to build from.
Today is mock ups of the arms.
This is surely as good as life can get!!
Here we go….
This one will be a full sized bed swing for a porch, on the beach in Florida!
Today, base is sanded and it is square!
Check these out at Thousand Hills Cattle Ranch!
One last Ranch Store pecan product as National Pecan Month comes to an end.
PECAN WOOD CUTTING/CHARCUTERIE BOARDS
Handcrafted in Georgia by Kennesaw Mountain Chair Company each of our wooden cutting boards is a one-of-a-kind treasure. They include a carry handle for easy reach in the cupboard or to hang in the kitchen. All boards are food grade, perfect for entertaining, and double sided for use or display. The Southern Pecan wood offers beautiful grain patterns of intricate lines and vibrant colors.
Boards are paired with Thousand Hills Cattle Ranch all-beef summer sausage, Pride Road's Hibiscus jellies, and a carving knife.
The bed swing is fitted and tested, and now primed. Paint will go one next, then assembly and 4,372 touch ups…..
Fitting an arm:
10:30 - make the initial cut to length and width.
10:33 - mark notch on back rest
10:55 - make 7th adjustment to both the arm and the support to get it perfect.
Take a phone call…..
11:25 - adjust arm shape to fit front arm support
11:30 - adjust back rest notch after front adjustment.
11:45 - make 4 more tweaks.
11:52 - remeasure for the 12th time.
1153 - look in amazement and admire your work and that you got it to fit perfectly the first time…. Well ok, almost…..
Still a LOT better than that big box store….
The Twin sized bed swing is coming together much better than I imagined. I really like the design and the joinery is turning out to fit perfectly!
The dry fit is complete.
Install the side rails and arms, then the back slats.
A finish sanding, then bolts, screws and glue, final assembly, stain or paint, and hang it from the rafters!
Had 3 Walnut logs slabbed out by , just outside of Rome, GA.
Andy does great sawmill work if you have a log that you need cut.
AND, he has a really nice variety of lumber ready to load in your truck if you need some right now for that project!
Nothing like laying out full sized plans for a bed swing right on the wood to make sure it really fits!
New tray - #102
Handles and rails are walnut.
Tray is Red Oak and Padauk.
I really like the walnut!!!
There are 4 trays completed #98, #99 & #100 (identical trays), and #101. These are all posted on my website for better viewing, and ordering, if you find one you like.
Each tray is about 11 1/2" wide x 23' long.
Look under the 'Shop in Stock' tab to see all the products that I have in the warehouse (a big shelf just outside the shop, in the other room in the basement...).

Serving Trays #99 (left) and #100 (right….obviously) with a coat of mineral oil.
Oil makes all the difference in the world to bring out the true colors in wood!
Maple handles and rails.
The Tray itself is:
Red Oak the 4 wide strips (2 different trees)
Padauk (red)
Wenge (black strips).
2 more trays in the que this evening.
More pictures later and on my website under the ‘Shop in Stock’ tab tomorrow.

Thanks for looking!
The multipurpose Trivit:
From prototype, and hole placement tests, to the final design. A little mineral oil makes a huge difference in color and looks!
#92 is on its way to Indiana!
Maybe the best looking serving tray yet.
At least that I’ve built…..
Saple, Padauk, Wenge, and Maple with hand forged handles. 12” x 23”.
These are fun to make. Customized wooden gift tags. They take longer to engrave than they do to make.
Some final pictures of the serving tray. I really like the design and the style, but……
Wood moves with air moisture. And there isn’t any way to stop it….
Apparently, the ‘Cookies’ were too thin (5/16”) and there was obviously a little moisture that created some shrinkage, and the cracks between the epoxy and the wood.
How do I fix it? Give it to the wife to use and start over……
It was a fun to build and I realized I’m just not an epoxy expert….
Back to the shop and on to the next project!!
The next batch of boards:
16 Cutting boards and Charcuterie trays are all but finished.
6 are already spoken for.
Raise the grain with a spray of water, re-sand to 320,
Brand and number
2 coats of mineral by oil and then melt in a coat of beeswax.
They will be posted on my website under the ‘Shop in Stock’ tab:

The R&D Department was busy yesterday before they left for the weekend….
New product development:
Hamilton, (nieghbor, and young man that comes to work for me on Friday afternoons), with just a simple conversation, he came up with an idea, I think a GREAT idea, to build a multi-purpose trivit.
One piece of the puzzle fits a small pan or dish. Assemble the puzzle for the larger casserole dish. This is just the sample/prototype made from scrap wood for design testing - prototype #1.
I used the process that Barry Smallwood uses when he make his famous military plaques - he builds a full scale design and prints onto paper, then glued onto the wood. Then just cut on the line!
The final product to be published after Thanksgiving.
This is when shop time is the most fun and satisfying!!
A little shop re-organization…
Thanks to .designs for the idea.
I moved my router from my main bench top and built a folding router table. It saves space and frees up the bench top.
Just another fine day down in the shop…..
Made my own ‘Mountain Wax’ (bees wax and mineral oil combo). It will start shipping with each board and serving tray.
Hmmm…. I guess I have to change the instructions on the backs of my labels now too….
I’ll talk to the Marketing Dept to get on that on Monday at the staff meeting. 😎
Whipped up a batch of cookbook holders last couple of weeks. Check them out on my website. If you need a house gift for Thanksgiving or a nice Christmas gift.
Shop is cleaned up and one skinny curved walnut board was left over. Nothing fancy, but they ended up as 2 nice live edge cutting boards/charcuterie trays.
Today is National ‘Clean Up and Clean Out The Shop’ Day…..
Not really, but it’s definitely time for it!
