Kidney Resource Network

A 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to the prevention of chronic kidney disease in the Killeen-Fort Hood, TX area

03/14/2024

March 14 is 2024. This year's theme is "Kidney Health For All - Advancing equitable access to care and optimal medication practice." Multiple determinants including socioeconomic, cultural, environmental, and political factors contribute to the disparity in disease burden across the globe. In lower resource contexts, access to and affordable and quality kidney care are particularly challenging, contributing to premature deaths of millions of people.

02/14/2024

Celebrated every year on February 14th, National Donor Day is an observance dedicated to spreading awareness and education about organ, eye and tissue donation.

Kidney Resource Network would like to encourage everyone to register as an organ donor with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Also, talk to your family about your desire to donate your organs.

You can save a life today! We encourage everyone to consider being tested as a living kidney donor. The average lifespan of a patient on dialysis is 5 to 10 years. The average wait time for a deceased donor is 3 to 7 years (depending on where you live). Share your spare! If you know of someone who needs a transplant, help give them life worth living.

National Donor Day is also a day to recognize those who have given and received the gift of life through organ, eye and tissue donation, are currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant, and those who died waiting because an organ was not donated in time.

We celebrate all kidney transplant recipients and are honored to receive the gift of life from the donors, whether deceased or living. By spreading the word, perhaps we can reduce the number of dialysis patients who pass away waiting...

How do you get involved? Register at any of the following:
- National Donate Life Registry www.registerme.org or
- At your local DMV

To be a living donor for someone specific, find out from that patient where they are listed. Otherwise, visit the National Kidney Registry at https://www.kidneyregistry.org/for-donors/ Get all of the information you need to understand the process, what's involved, and see the various programs in which you can participate.

The most important donation you make in your lifetime is another life. Share your spare kidney.

We are honored to receive a grant from Rock Rose Foundation this year! Educating our community about chronic kidney disease prevention through free kidney screenings. With kidney disease being such a silent disease, 7 out of 10 people with chronic disease are unaware that they have it. Unfortunately, people of color are the last to receive a diagnosis. So these kidney screenings are vital. Thank you so much, Rock Rose, for this blessing!

The Depression is Real 11/29/2023

An article published by Kidney International Reports (Shirazian et al., 2017) revealed that “depression is highly prevalent and is associated with poor quality of life and increased mortality among adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).”

Personally, having to manage feelings of mortality at the age of 28 was traumatic. Although I was super sick, I still had kidney function and was urinating and living my life despite the constant illnesses. I knew that at some point the ball would drop and I would likely end up on dialysis. But that didn’t happen until I was 50. Can you imagine actively thinking about your mortality and how you would end up living your life for 22 years straight? >>>Finish reading at the link below.

The Depression is Real No, friend… It’s not all in your head. The feelings you are feeling are real and you are not alone. It’s depression. Depression is a real trip. You go to sleep perfectly fine and wake up to suddenly being immobilized and not wanting to go to work. You can't get anything accomplished. As matter...

Take Race Out of the Kidney Transplant Equation 11/18/2023

"Did you know there is a federal formula that “scores” kidneys from Black deceased kidney donors less favorably than kidneys from non-Black individuals? It’s called the Kidney Donor Risk Index (KDRI), and it includes African-American ethnicity as a donor characteristic to determine the risk of kidney failure after it is transplanted. Race is a social construct and does not belong in clinical care. Kidneys from black donors perform the same functions as kidneys from white donors and the federal government should treat them equitably." Click to read more.

Take Race Out of the Kidney Transplant Equation The National Kidney Foundation believes using race and ethnicity in clinical calculations harms patients and perpetuates racism in kidney care.

Kidney Resource Network received its first grant! This funding makes it possible for us to conduct free kidney health screenings in the City of Killeen, Texas - Government in 2024. Statistically, only 1 in 10 people are aware they have chronic kidney disease and chronic kidney disease is a silent killer! These kidney health screenings are critical to informing patients who are at risk due to hypertension and diabetes and don't even know it!

Transplants For All: Saving Lives, One Kidney at a Time 04/19/2023

So many people die waiting for a kidney transplant. In an age where technology is such that they are working on creating 3-D kidneys, to know that logistics is an issue is crazy. But we also can't forget about the social determinants of health that lead to disparities in access to transplantation for people of color. We have to do better.

Transplants For All: Saving Lives, One Kidney at a Time In 2021, there were 786,000 patients1 living with kidney failure, yet less than 25,0002 received a transplant that year. In 2022, the U.S. finally reached 25,000 kidney transplants3 in one year, but there are still an estimated twelve people dying each day without the opportunity to receive a life-s...
