Odie McOderson is as excited as I am that I finally found the highly sought after Scottish Highland skeleton from Tractor Supply. Have y’all seen them where you live?

Which one do we need next? Rooster? Donkey? Pig??

In 2020 Steve and I happened to stumble on the cutest little AirBnb while on vacation in Black Mountain, NC. Not only was the AirBnB adorable but the hosts were hands down the friendliest and most welcoming hosts we have yet to encounter..

Flash forward to today and our friends The Perry’s along with their friends from Florida (who just happen to love Scottish Highlands as much as I do) visited the farm.

We had such an incredible visit and it’s moments like these that I know that we are right where we are supposed to be.. farming is hard but so incredibly worth it.

Get outside with good people and love on some animals and I promise your mental health will thank you.

The girls are on their way home from their mini vacay of being spoiled rotten at Rocky Creek Highlands

I have a feeling Mr. Jim and Mrs. Darla have made life long friends with Alyssa and June.

Incredibly thankful for friends and mentors like Team Clifton.

06/24/2024

It’s been the Mondayest Monday in a loooong time here at the farm….

I woke up this morning super excited to head over to Rocky Creek Highlands because today the vet was headed out to check on Miss Annie who seemed to be holding her baby hostage.. while the vet was out I planned to have Alyssa and June pregnancy checked…

5 minutes before I was supposed to leave the house I went in to the laundry room to check on a load I had started in the washer… utter chaos.

Steve later determined that the chaos was caused by our fairly new LG washer popping a hose…

WATER EVERYWHERE.

We have a pan under the washer in case of overflow but the water told the pan to hold its beer.

Water under the walls through the living room. Under our brand new flooring we just laid…

It gets better….

Our washing machine is above our basement. It wasn’t until Steve got home from work that he noticed that water had flowed in to an air vent in our floor through the ducts and has covered our basement floor.

AC couldn’t hang and it’s current 98 gabillion degrees in our house..

We missed the pregnancy check but Darla was so sweet to FaceTime us… through the broken connection we were able to hear that both Alyssa and June are at least 4 months bred… which means…. Merlin got the job done before his first Birthday. Winter babies are on the horizon and has made this lousy day a little brighter.

Annie is also fine and due around the same time as our girls! Such good news.

06/20/2024

Our girls are thriving over at Rocky Creek Highlands and I think Alyssa really loves her some Mr. Jim.

Darla Clifton hasn’t seen any action between our ladies and Kraken which means our little Merlin may have gotten the job done.

Plan is to have the vet pregnancy check them on Monday! I’ll keep y’all updated!

The Farmstead has been hit with a nasty virus… Human Metapneumovirus to be exact… all of our years in health care before becoming farmers and neither Steve or I have ever heard of it…

Sawyer was first, then our Lincoln with her reactive airway.. she landed in the ER twice and an admission to the ICU. Thankfully she is home now and healing.

Steve was next (y’all know the severity of the man cold) and then me….

Let’s just say moving cows and goats with fevers and shortness of breath is not my favorite thing to do but our animals still depend on us even when we feel like a bag of smashed of buttholes..

It’s times like these I’m reminded why we chose to do what we are doing.. growing our own food and connecting back with what’s important… money can buy all the things but it can’t buy HEALTH.

All of this to say, you are what you eat.. sunshine heals…..take off your shoes and plant your feet in the Earth.

Thank y’all for following around on our crazy journey!

Here is a couple of pictures of Alyssa getting loved on… fingers crossed we’ll see some action for our ladies in the next couple of days.

Big thanks again and again to our friends over Rocky Creek Highlands

Makes my heart so happy to see Alyssa and June living their best lives over at Rocky Creek Highlands .

Seems like Auggie (Alyssa’s almost 2 year old son) is taking his momma being on vacay harder than Liberty (Alyssa’s 11 month old newly weaned daughter).

Big thanks to Darla and Jim for loving our girls so well and being such great friends!

If y’all are in the market for a Scottish Highland I could not recommend them more.

Looks like Kraken is mighty excited to romance some new ladies….

05/21/2024

Y’all need to get you some friends like the folks over at Rocky Creek Highlands

This morning they came all the way out to the farm with their trailer to pick up Alyssa and June for a date with their boy Kraken….

Our ladies took one look at the trailer.. swiped left…. turned… and raaaaaaan for the hills….

We even called in our neighbor Mr. Larry as reinforcement and we just couldn’t convince them that the trailer was gonna be a good time.

Sooooo after a couple hours and us sweating through our clothes Jim and Darla left us their trailer to try and load them when it gets a little cooler out.

Not sure what I did to have such incredible farmer friends in my life but I am so so grateful!

Lincoln was hand selected as one of six students to represent her school for citizenship day! 4H took all the kids on a tour of our local government offices. Nice escape from the classroom!

I don’t know about Lincoln but the coolest thing I learned today is that Mayor rocks Converse!

Show me something prettier than Peonies in TN…

I’ll wait… in the meantime you can drool over my first of the season.

I’ve loved these flowers something fierce for a very long time… so much so that I have them tattooed on my right shoulder.

What is your favorite flower?

This little dude went in to goat yoga last night without a name….

Everyone meet Hopper!!

He was made for yoga and was totes the MVP!

Photos from Wild and Free Farmstead's post 04/25/2024

Last night we hosted our very first goat yoga! Led by the beautiful Tammie Gosnell Chandley (the sweetest yoga instructor of all time).

I am still smiling even though Shasta and Chevy (our two Great Pyrenees) busted out twice…Nanner got her head stuck in the electric fence that wasn’t electrified (thankfully Steve had his pocket knife handy)….. annnd our wood chip guy decided to make a delivery with his dump truck right in the middle of yoga. There is so much beauty in the chaos here on the farm.

Getting people here to truly feel the peace of being outside surrounded by animals is what sets my soul on fire these days.

Thank you to everyone that came and loved on our cows, donkeys, goats, and pigs!!

Barn cats doing barn cat ish…

Momma is in the middle… we rescued Coffee from the local dump and had no idea she was pregnant….. surprise!

5 kittens were born on our farm March 2023. On the left is “My Girl” Coffee’s calico daughter..

On the right is “Goose”… our bright orange and white long haired barn cat… not ideal but he makes it work…

Harry and Sally went to live at the homestead next door to be barn cats and Gerald went to live with Steve’s boss as an indoor cat… they are all thriving and it makes my heart so so happy!!

04/07/2024
