š Joe Mangrum, a renowned sand artist, faced daily harassment from the NYC Parks Dept, receiving $250 tickets for various alleged violations. They claimed he was vending without a permit, accepting donations, and setting up within 50 ft of a monument. Washington Square Park, full of monuments, leaves only one spot for performers to legally busk, despite its rich history of public performances by legends like Bob Dylan and Dave Chappelle. This is only one of many citations that Joe received. This systemic harassment persisted for months, with many performers targeted until legal representation stepped in. The First Amendment and the Supreme Court decision in Texas v. Johnson protect expressive acts and free expression. Money is also speech and constitutionally protected. šØāEarlier in Joeās career, he was arrested for creating art in Sproul Plaza in Berkeley using rice flour and water, a site significant for the Free Speech Movement led by Mario Savio. He also faced issues at San Francisco State outside the Cesar Chavez Student Center, where he was exhibiting his first solo show in the school gallery at Malcolm X Plaza. Joe was repeatedly harassed for making art from flower petals on Market Street and had many other run-ins over his 30-year career simply for creating ephemeral art in public spaces.#FreeExpression #ArtIsNotACrime #FirstAmendment #NYCArt #JoeMangrum

15 Years ago I was commissioned to create installations for festivals a lot. There primary purposes was to provide shade and fun chill space in an interactive way. Having been a beastie's fan since they first broke in my senior year of hs I had been on tour with them in 94 lollapallooza and seen them in nightclubs as quasar and area shows as well. Was looking forward to seeing them again at All Points west but got the tragic news of MCA's cancer and cancellation of the show last minute. Jay Z stepped up to perform and put on a good show although admittedly less than perfect tribute of no sleep til Brooklyn. None the less respect Jay sc My installation was titled Rabbit š Hole š³ļø and had a sort of alice in Wonderland theme of funhouse mirrors where people could chill and space out in the shade and get some awesome pics of themselves all funhouse style. All this before the social media explosion. š„.
