Kirksville R-3 Schools and other local schools head back to the classrooms next week. The Kirksville Police Department offers the following tips in hopes for a safe and happy school year.

Safety Tips for Drivers
• Drivers should be aware of children walking to school or to the bus stop.
• ALWAYS stop of school busses that are loading and unloading children
• NEVER pass other vehicles while driving in a school zone
• When backing out of the driveway, watch for children walking to school or to a bus stop.
• On streets without crossing guards, watch out for children trying to cross the street.

School Bus Safety Tips
• Children riding the bus to school should learn and practice a few safety rules for getting on and off the bus.
• Get to the bus stop early. Do not run to the bus.
• Make sure your child stays out of the street and avoids excessive horseplay while waiting for the school bus.
• Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop before walking toward it.
• If crossing the street, wait for a signal from the bus driver. Look both ways to make sure there is no moving traffic from either direction.
• Always cross in front of the bus so the driver can see you.
• If the bus has lap and shoulder belts, use them.
• Once the bus is in motion, remain in your seat.
• Keep your arms and head inside the bus at all times.
• Do not shout or distract the driver
• Only get off the bus at your assigned spot.

Walking Safety
• Children should only walk to school alone if they are old enough and ready to make the walk safely.
• Children are not ready to walk to school without an adult until they are at least 10 years old.
• Teach children to obey all traffic signals, signs, traffic officers, and crossing guards, whether they are walking, biking or riding a bus
• Younger kids cannot be trusted to make smart traffic choices on their own.
• Plan and practice a safe walking route with your child until he/she knows it well.
• Use streets with sidewalks, crosswalks and crossing guards. Avoid as many intersections as possible.
• Have children walk with a friend or in a group.
• Talk to your child about what to do if they are approached by a stranger.
• Teach children to walk confidently and to be alert to their surroundings
• Be sure children know their address, phone number for their parents.

Parents, beginning last Friday (8/2) you should have received an email from the district to sign up for the Parent Portal of Power School. You can access the portal online or download the app called: Power School Mobile. Go ahead and sign up and download the app. This info is all in the email.

If you have not registered your children for the 2024-25 school year, do that first! Then within a day or two, you will receive info on setting up your Parent Portal access. If you are not getting these emails, contact your children's buildings to update your contact info.

Once you get into the parent portal you will be able to see attendance, assignments, grades, and student schedules. Note that schedules are subject to tweaks and changes until school begins for our middle and high school students.

Thank you for your ongoing understanding as we transition to this new student information system! It has been a big undertaking for our registration office, IT department, and office staff all across campus!

Love Kirksville Schools and graduates, but these two are my favorites.

Proud of Dorian is not a strong enough statement. Love him and I am proud of him daily no matter what, but today his work ethic, commitments, and investments (3rd in his class at Kirksville R-3 School District, Summa cm laude including chemistry honors at Truman State University) make me especially beam as he earned his Doctorate in Chemistry from University of Minnesota Twin Cities

Blessed with fabulous teachers, coaches, and professors from Faith Lutheran School, Kirksville RIII Schools and universities along the journey!

Congratulations Dr. Dorian Sneddon

Molly Sneddon coming up quickly 😀

We are looking for an ag teacher and FFA sponsor for the 2024-25 school year. Help us recruit one by sharing this post far and wide. Tag anyone who should consider applying!

Kirksville Schools have competitive starting teacher salaries within the state, strong insurance benefits, and a community with a lot to offer as a hometown. Our ag department is housed at the Kirksville Area Technical Center, next to our high school. This would make a great opportunity for a candidate looking to help grow an existing ag and FFA program.
