A Shepherding Life: Remembering Eden the Therapy Dog When I first started bringing Eden into the office with me for therapy sessions, I didn't know how clients would respond. Eden wasn't large, as far as German Shepherds go, but she was by no means small, and the breed has a mixed reputation when it comes to approachableness, warmth, and sociability.....

OUR TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY
At Trailhead Treatment Center, LLC, we specialize in treating men’s mental health issues. This often includes addressing complex trauma, addiction issues, issues related to gay and other sexual minority men, anxiety, depression, and the symptoms of what Terrence Real calls “covert male depression,” which often includes sexual addictions and compulsions, substance abuse, emotional numbness, rage, perfectionism, self-criticism, and some narcissistic traits.
As a treatment center, we do not discriminate based on race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, or gender expression/identity. All candidates should be fully affirming of the LGBT+ community.
Sexual compulsion is the primary complaint of many referred clients we receive at this time, with frequent comorbidity of ADHD and narcissistic behavioral patterns. Any clinician interested in working at Trailhead must have previous experience working with sexual addictions and compulsions or be open to learning about these specific conditions.
We are open to and welcome other clinicians' specialties and interests under the umbrella of men’s issues. For instance, some of our clinicians focus specifically on young men while others focus on working with gay men. But understand that, due to our current referral funnel, you will most likely be receiving a large number of clients self-reporting struggles with sexual compulsivity.
Bob Ross exhibits the tenderness that all men possess. We just have to move a little junk (toxic masculinity, traditional male norms, patriarchal socialization, etc) to access it.
And Trailhead would love to be there for you!
We have immediate openings. Happy Holidays! 😊

Men’s health awareness month: Many experts say men’s depression is underdiagnosed Gay men and boys under 25 and men over 85 are most likely to complete su***de.
Over the past two years, I have engaged in a significant amount of personal inner child work. It has changed every facet of how I see myself and how I view the little boy versions of me. Those internal little boys went almost 35 years without ever being acknowledged by me for how wonderful, innocent, fun, creative and sweet they were/are.
There were so many childhood situations that I experienced where I needed a safe adult to see me, attune to me, and understand what I felt. Part of my therapy journey has been going back to those little boys as my 35 year old adult self, witnessing their experiences, and giving them what they needed. Many times during my internal interactions with them all they needed was for my adult self to pick them up, take them out of scary situations, acknowledge their goodness, and bring them into the present to be with me where they could feel safe again. They needed to know that the adult me would never allow them to be in those situations again.
So when I saw this powerful photo series, I was deeply moved. It reminded me of my personal journey of healing my inner child-selves and the deeply privileged role I have as a therapist to help clients connect with their innocent, amazing, worthy, inner children.

Masculinity isn’t the problem. There is room for all forms of gender experience and presentation. But these false beliefs about what it means to be a man can be problematic at best and extremely harmful at worst.
We encourage you to always engage in self-reflection to become more aware of what belief systems you adhere to and how they may help or hurt you.

“Toxic masculinity is characterized by a drive to dominate and by endorsement of misogynistic and homophobic views”
If we identify as men and hold these views, we are not only harming others, but placing unrealistic expectations on ourselves. An internal splitting takes place in which we become greatly uncomfortable with our feelings and internal contradictions; thus, mental illness begins to emerge.
We have to push down parts of ourselves that would endorse collaboration, connection, clarity, and choice, while upholding standards that are society, culture, religion and family may have thrusted on us.
Healing as a person (outside of gender duality), means inviting the parts back into ourselves that we had to push down to survive our upbringing.

“National studies suggest that doctors miss the diagnosis in men a full 70% of the time. But male depression also stays hidden because men tend to express depression differently than women do.”
“It has three major symptoms. First, men attempt to escape pain by overusing alcohol or drugs, working excessively or seeking extramarital affairs. They go into isolation, withdrawing from loved ones. And they may lash out, becoming irritable or violent.”
-Terrance Real
I Don’t Want to Talk About It
In a patriarchal society, all genders get a bad deal.
Women are often robbed of a public voice and a seat at the table or discouraged from speaking truth to power.
Men, on the other hand (as well as some women who vow to tow the patriarchal party line), are given power and prestige but told not to feel, not to have close relationships with other men, not to desire affection or comfort, and to deal with their problems on their own.
This leaves us with communities absent of men’s vulnerability and the powerful, wise voices of women.
We must fight to reclaim both.

What can you do?
Connect with a therapist who is skilled in working with enmeshment issues ( we've got you covered at Trailhead).
Or start by creating some awareness about the problem. Grab a copy of this book — Silently Seduced: When Parents Make Their Children Partners, by Kenneth Adams, PhD
Just a friendly reminder to embrace all parts of yourself.
Kids are left trying to make sense of the chaos that’s going on around them, and they need to believe their parents have their best interest in mind.
A shame-based identity begins to emerge. This identity is then carried with them into adulthood and becomes the lens through which they see themselves and others.
Maybe drinking was the first time you felt normal. Maybe p**n has been the only consistent, reliable, calming force in your life.
But typically our shame and self-criticism around these behaviors are so strong, they keep us from seeing that the part of us that picked up our addiction or compulsion was simply doing the best it could to help us feel better in that moment. You don’t have to agree with the part’s behavior in order to validate that, in the moment, it meant you well.
Often our work with men who come to us with addictive or compulsive behaviors starts by exploring this love story without shame or judgment. When we can look at the compulsive or addicted part of ourselves with compassion, it starts to tell us its story, and that story is often the first step to change.
Here’s a quick Father’s Day reminder of what these relationships should include.
Which qualities describe the relationship you have with your folks?
A healthy adult child-parent relationship should always come with choice.
