Who cut this?

As a realtor and arborist- I’m always scouting for cut wood. It tells part of the history of a property. This week-we’re clearing a lake lot in Sharp’s Chapel. Here is evidence of the 2 arborists that felled before me. Who were they?

New year, new me! It is not just humans who can have New Year’s resolutions, animals can too. Below are some of the resolutions of the park's animals:

Black bear will appreciate their body at all sizes.
(Black bears in this region can gain over 100 pounds in preparation to winter denning.)

Mink will love their skin with any color.
(Depending on the season mink can change between dark brown in the summer to white in the winter.)

Salamander will remember that there is healing in solitude.
(Salamanders spend a majority of their time burrowing in the soil beneath the frost line.)

Copperhead snake will love themselves no matter their identity.
(Depending on environmental changes, copperheads can switch between both male and female reproductive organs.)

Black-capped chickadee will remember that they are stronger than they appear.
(Chickadees have the ability to lower their body temperature up to 14 degrees Fahrenheit to save energy throughout the night.)

Rainbow trout will remember they can survive and adapt in any environment.
(Smoltification is the process of physical changes where these fish adapt to living in saltwater and freshwater.)

Planning a hike in Great Smoky Mountains National Park? Follow these simple trail etiquette rules to help make it a more pleasant experience for all.

1. Hikers going uphill have the right of way. The uphill hikers have a smaller field of vision and are working against gravity to propel them up the trail. If you are walking down the trail, step aside and give room for the people climbing up.

2. Hikers yield to horses and other pack stock on the trail. Slowly and calmy step to the side of the trail as not to startle the animals. If you are approaching horses or other hikers from behind, calmy announce your presence and intentions.

3. If hiking in a group, remember to hike single file, allowing others to pass and avoid taking up the whole width of the trail.

4. Help preserve the trail by staying on the trail when yielding. Hiking off trail can damage the fragile ecosystems that surround the trail.

Lastly, remember to treat everyone with respect and have fun!
