My daughter and I were honored to attend a a small family gathering honoring graduating from high school! Kaly has been an incredible voice student of mine for 4 1/2 years, starting when she was only 13! (The same age of my daughter in this picture). It has been amazing to watch her incredible progress as an artist and we are so happy to celebrate this great milestone in her life!🎉 Can’t wait to see what’s next for you Kaly!! As a Worship Leader myself for over 30 years, I always love the opportunity to work with other Worship Leaders!🙌🏼🎵

There are unique challenges and opportunities for vocalists in every genre, and Worship Leading is no exception. Many of the things we work on in lessons are the same:

✅ Increasing breath support
✅ Improving pitch accuracy & agility
✅ Expanding vocal range
✅ Developing a beautiful tone
✅ Delivering with dynamic range
✅ Transitioning through mix voice

Just to name a few.

Since singing is an art form, there are “performance” aspects to all singing. But one of the things that makes Worship Leading different than other genres is that the music and lyrics are intended to point people’s attention to God and not on themselves as an artist. That is a tricky balance for most of us because in addition to the spiritual aspect of Worship Leading and allowing freedom for God to move in the moment, all of the other things every singer needs to deliver their message effectively (pitch accuracy, great rhythm, remembering lyrics, dynamic range, breath support, beautiful tone, physically communicating to the audience or congregation) are the same.

I know some of you may not agree with me on this, but please give it some thought. If other artistic forms worked this way, what would happen? In a band, if the drummer chose to play a different time signature (3/4 instead of 4/4 with the rest of the band and click track), what would happen? What if the keys or electric guitar chose to play the whole song just a half a step higher than the rest of the band? Dance teams are similar. What if one dancer in a group decided to just dance “how she felt” in the moment instead of working together in harmony with the rest of the team? To say it would be distracting from the message of the song in either examples would be a huge understatement.

What I’m proposing is a healthy balance between musical preparation and freedom in the moment as we lead. It’s very possible to have “both and” instead of “either or”. Does it require more preparation? Yes. Is God worthy of our best offering of praise? Yes!

As I watch my daughter practice Hula today, I’m so grateful to be here on Maui so she can connect with her Hawaiian roots and culture. 🌺

From time to time people ask me, “Why does anyone need voice lessons”? It’s a great question that I’ve considered a lot. Here are my thoughts:

What I’ve observed over 30 years of teaching is that most people appreciate having a coach/teacher in many areas requiring skill like dance, playing an instrument, playing sports (football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, bodybuilding/fitness, etc.), acting, cheerleading and gymnastics, just to name a few. So what is the difference in finding a coach/teacher to become a better singer? I believe singing is something most of us have done our entire life, and our voice is very personal, unlike a musical instrument or a football. I know some people think “This is the voice God gave me and it’s fine the way it is”. Actually, I do believe that is true. You are enough and have everything you need. But what if we applied that thinking to all of our other pursuits? The truth is, having the right coach/teacher can definitely help us develop our God-given potential to a higher level, to become everything we are capable of being!

So hats off to all of the coaches and teachers in our world who push us to be our very best each day. We are grateful for you!⭐️🎵
