Hello friends!
Anna Tait: Suicidal Witch, Cold-Blooded Killer or Victim of Her Time?

Time for another “Today in history”, this time from Scotland.

This will most likely have several elements that will be controversial and I have little doubt there will be some interesting discussion as a result.

While the historical narrative of witch hunts often highlights large-scale events such as those in Europe or the infamous Salem Witch Trials in the United States, numerous smaller-scale incidents and individual accounts have regrettably been lost to the annals of time. One such obscured case is that of Anna Tait, also known as "Hononni," whose story might have faded into oblivion if not for the diligent efforts of scholars like Christina Larner and her seminal work, the Sourcebook of Scottish Witchcraft.

Anna's tale, chronicled in a manuscript housed in the National Library of Scotland Advocates, was originally overlooked during the compilation of Larner's sourcebook. Contrary to common perceptions, Anna's arrest was not directly linked to witchcraft; instead, it stemmed from her attempted su***de, an act deemed as grave as witchcraft in the 17th century, carrying severe penalties.

Upon her apprehension, Anna divulged a harrowing narrative of murder, poisoning, adultery, a failed home abortion, and death. Her account unfolded the complexities of her marriage, unhappiness, and a pact with the devil. The devil's counsel led her to concoct a poisonous drink, administered to her husband, resulting in his death within three hours.

Similarly, Anna received sinister guidance on terminating her daughter's unwanted pregnancy, culminating in a deadly potion. Tragically, in attempting to conceal her daughter's condition, Anna inadvertently caused the demise of both mother and child. Consumed by guilt and despair, she sought solace in multiple su***de attempts.

When confronted with the accusation that the Devil had influenced her actions and turned her into a witch, Anna scarcely defended herself. The prospect of avoiding the ignominious death of being strangled and burned at the stake seemed, to her, a welcome escape. When asked if she desired anyone to speak in her defense, her poignant response was, 'none but God in heaven.'

In the context of 17th-century society, and in part Ms. Larner’s work - Anna represented a paragon of horror, necessitating the invocation of the Devil to rationalize her conduct. In a societal framework that confined women to prescribed roles as wives and mothers, Anna became a monstrous figure. To her community, she embodied not only an attempted self-murderer but also an adulteress and the unnatural murderer of her husband, daughter, and unborn grandchild. By confessing to witchcraft, she had amassed a catalogue of crimes deemed most appalling for a woman of that era.

Despite her confession sparing her from the gruesome fate of being burned alive, Anna's ultimate sentence was grimly determined. On January 6, 1635, it was decreed that "the said Anna Tait should be taken, her hands bound behind her back and conveyed by William Allot, the lockman [ex*****oner] of Haddington, to the ordinary place of ex*****on, and there wirried [strangled] to death, and thereafter her body to be burnt to ashes."

Anna Tait's story stands as a poignant reminder of the complexities and harsh consequences faced by individuals ensnared in the web of accusations, superstition, and complications understanding or identifying psychological trauma.

Also, for those interested we will releasing a series of shorts and videos at the link below. These will be not only for torture and ex*****ons in general, but will also explain the inspiration for many Brodequin songs…link in the comments.

CHILD MURDERER or innocent political target?

After the last “today in history” about Helene Gillet which sparked so much chatter and debate, I thought it a good time to mention Gille de Rais as he came up in discussion. Not an official “today in history” but more of a point of discourse.

Often Gilles de Rais is portrayed as the world’s first serial killer, which seems unlikely for a host of reasons. Also, he is often cited as the inspiration for the French folktale of Bluebeard.

Gille de Rais born ~1405 in Champtocé-sur-Loire, Anjou and was put to death on the 26th of October, 1440 in Nantes (not far from Hellfest for those that have been). Having endured a challenging childhood in the sense he lost both parents at about age 10, he later found fame and fortune.

His military career found him fighting alongside Jon of Arc and reaching the title of Marshal of France, the highest military honor in the country. At the conclusion of his career and while obtaining vast amounts of wealth he spent more and more of his time at his private estate. He became increasingly concerned with religion and his own salvation, he dabbled in the occult, alchemy and financed a chapel called the Chapel of Holy Innocents.

It was during this point in his life that rumors had begun circulating about his activities, as several children had gone missing in the area around facilities owned by Gilles de Rais. Common during this time was the fact that young boys taken into service by nobles would be permanently removed from their parents. Given this fact, it’s entirely possible that the child’s family would have been unaware of their fate.

In September of 1440 Gille de Rais was arrested after he kidnapped a priest. It was at this point the accusations came out and he was charged with heresy and murdering more than 100 children.
Under the threat of torture Gilles de Rais confessed and testified that “when the said children were dead, he kissed them and those who had the most handsome limbs and heads he held up to admire them, and had their bodies cruelly cut open and took delight at the sight of their inner organs; and very often when the children were dying he sat on their stomachs and took pleasure in seeing them die and laughed”

As with any trial, it is debated whether or not he was guilty of the crimes he was accused. On the side of innocence, it has been noted not a single body was found, no physical evidence to back up any claims and the judges and prosecution benefited from his death. It has been suggested he may have confessed to save himself from excommunication.
Ultimately he was Sentenced to death and executed by hanging and burning on Oct. 26, though his body was saved before the flames entirely reduced it to ash.

Two yeas after his death the King Louis XI granted so called letters of rehabilitation that stated “The said Gilles, unduly and without cause, was condemned and put to death”.

In 1992, a retrial for what its worth, was held and found Gilles de Rais innocent of all charges.

There is a wide variety of material available if you are interested in learning more. We have a song about him using his name Gilles de Rais, as the title for track 8 on our Festival of Death album, available through Season of Mist or your digital platform of choice.

Its been a while dear friends. Time for another "Today in history"

On this date in 1625, Helene Gillet went to the scaffold in Dijon to suffer beheading for infanticide.

But it was the ex*****oner and not Helene who came down from it in pieces.

Helene was the beautiful 21-year-old daughter of a royal chatelain, thanks to her status, she was entitled to the dignity of a beheading, rather than an ignoble dispatch by rope. But all else for Helene Gillet was shame: her father disowned her and forbade any intervention on her behalf; only Helen’s mother accompanied her to Dijon to appeal against the sentence.

The scaffold on which the whole tragedy was to unfold was a permanent edifice. Its routine employment was attested by the permanent wooden palisade and the small stone chapel comprising the arena — features that would factor in the ensuing scene.

Having positioned Gillet on the block, our troubled ex*****oner raised up his ceremonial sword and brought it crashing down … on her left shoulder. The blow toppled the prisoner from the block, but she was quite alive. To cleanly strike through a living neck with a hand-swung blade — to do so under thousands of hostile eyes — was never a certain art. Hoots and missiles began pelting the platform as the pitiable condemned, matted with blood, struggled back to the block.

One chop would do it: the struggling patient would still, the archer detail would restrain the angry crowd. Again the high ex*****oner raised the blade and again arced it down on the young woman’s head — and again goggled in dismay. Somehow, the blow had been half-deflected by a knot of Helene Gillet’s hair, and nicked only a small gash in the supplicant’s neck. Having now seen the vulnerable youth survive two clumsy swipes, the crowd’s fury poured brickbats onto the stage in a flurry sufficient to drive the friars who accompanied the condemned to flee in fear for their own lives.

The raging mob by this time had pushed through the guards and overrun the palisades. The ex*****oner’s wife was ruthlessly torn to pieces, and the cowering ex*****oner himself soon forced from his refuge to the same fate.

Helene Gillet, who had survived a beheading, was hauled by her saviors bloody and near-senseless to a nearby surgeon, who tended her injuries and confirmed that none of them ought be fatal.

The Parliament of Dijon received the royal pardon on June 2, and formally declared Helene Gillet’s official acquittal.

The fortunate woman, having had a brush with the sublime, is said to have retired herself to a convent and lived out the best part of the 17th century there in prayer.

The majority of the foreign bands confirmed thus far will be making an exclusive US appearance at MDF 2024. There are a few foreign bands that will also play several additional MDF-affiliated shows in the week following MDF, so be on the lookout for more info about that in the coming months.

A limited amount of discounted early bird (4-day) passes go on sale this Friday, January 27th at 11 AM EST. Save the link below and be prepared to snag one of those.

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/maryland-deathfest-xix-tickets-520348395057

The early bird passes will likely sell out the same day they are released, but don’t stress if you don’t get one, as more 4-day passes will be released later, although at a slightly higher price.

Regarding venues/stages being utilized for MDF 2024, we are planning to use Rams Head, Power Plant, Soundstage, and potentially a stage outside at Market Place (near Soundstage). We will be able to follow up about the Market Place stage in the early summer, but as it stands now, we are planning on this 4 stage arrangement, all of which are contained to one general area and will reduce the amount of walking for you. This indoor/outdoor arrangement all in the same general area could be somewhat reminiscent of when the festival was at Sonar, for those who remember that.
There will be plenty of space for merch vendors around the fountain area at Power Plant and nearby sidewalks, right between the stages being used.

We still have at least 40 more bands to announce, and the next round of 10 or so confirmed bands will be announced during the month of February. We are holding off until late spring/early summer to potentially announce a few of those bands, as there are still some obstacles in the way for them to enter the US.

We hope to see you again next year for the return of Maryland Deathfest on May 23-26, 2024!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Having played guitar the majority of my life, and owning several of various brands, getting a custom guitar made to my exact specifications seemed unlikely yet constantly intriguing. While many manufactures offer customization to a certain degree, I was looking for something more than just choosing the neck material or hardware.

I needed something built from the ground up. A guitar built for a singular purpose. I had no need for anything more than a bridge pickup and volume. It’s on or off. That’s it. I won’t be dialing back the tone k**b or finding the perfect pickup selection setting to increase the multiplicity of sounds produced. No. I write music for Brodequin. Brodequin is a ballad free zone. Brodequin is aural violence.

Unfortunately, this guitar only existed in my head until I came across Radek Lamboj. Building out of a small village in Czech Republic, Radek offers a completely custom experience.
Every detail was covered from major decisions like neck width to minor details such as the brand of screws for the pickguard. Once the details were laid out, the building began. Radek started with the body which was carved out of roughly 200-year-old reclaimed wood. The wood was once a roof truss from a long-abandoned building used to house local miners. The pickguard is reclaimed as well but is made from the building’s flooring. The neck and fretboard however are new. Maple and mahogany respectively. All of the hardware is Gotoh and the pickup is a Seymour Duncan Nazgul.

Radek sent a photo update once a week and after roughly 6 weeks, the guitar was on its way. The pics below are a few that were sent to me during the process. Behold the Brodequin guitar! I hope you all enjoy it!

If anyone would like to get a custom guitar made, please contact Radek at his email: [email protected]

The St*****do

Also known as “Corda” or “Estrapade” as well as many other terms was both a public and private punishment. Most often associated with the Inquisitions as it satisfied their prohibition of drawing blood from prisoners. The St*****do has been employed in many countries for centuries including WWII, The Vietnam War and as recently as 2017 during the battle of Mosul, just to name a few examples.

The continued use for so many years is a testament to its simplicity and lack of extensive materials needed in order to utilize it.

Looking back to our area of familiarity, the middle ages, the severity of the punishment was dependent on the crime one was accused of.

There are some variations in design but all possess some similarities. Generally a victim’s arms are tied behind the back by the wrists, that rope is put through either a pulley or over a beam etc. As the rope is pulled the victim is lifted off their feet by their wrists, (which are behind the back) the victim is forced to support their body weight by their shoulders…which eventually dislocates them. Massive damage to the nerves of this region are probable as well as extensive ligament and tendon ruptures. In some cases ropes were placed directly behind one shoulder and more ropes were attached to the wrists where they were continually twisted by assistants to cause more pain. By targeting one shoulder all the body weight is focused there which could lead to quicker deterioration of the victim.

Some variations include attaching weights to the ankles, or using a series of drops with or without weights. The dropping method is referred to as “squassation” where the victim is raised, then dropped only to be stopped quickly by a pull of the rope before reaching the ground. The torment continues as long as deemed necessary. The heights to which one was raised were dependent on public vs. private interrogations and the size of the room that was being used. Public displays were often at considerable heights in an attempt to provide the best viewing experience (and warning) to the crowd gathered for the event.

This was one of the early pieces of art we chose to use, and is also displayed on the CD itself from our Instruments of Torture release.

The Malleus Maleficarum is most commonly translated as the Hammer of Witches. Authored by Heinrich Kraemer & Johann Sprenger, published in 1486 in the town of Speyer, Germany. (Speyer itself, has ancient roots being founded by the Romans with the first encampments taking place around 10 BC). Johann Sprenger was dean of the University of Cologne & Heinrich Kraemer a professor of theology at the University of Salzburg, Austria. Kraemer, later would be an inquisitor in the Tirol area of Austria with Sprenger the inquisitor for the provinces of Trier, Mainz and Cologne, Germany.

The release of the Malleus Maleficarum was more than likely inspired in part by Pope Innocent VIII issuing of the bull Summis desiderantes affectibus,(1484) in which the Pope expressed concern and strong disapproval of the spread of witchcraft.

The Malleus Maleficarum is the standard handbook on witchcraft. This work is a theological and perhaps more importantly, legal document detailing how to identify and destroy witches. The book is composed of three sections. The first section details the reality of the existence of witches and the depravity they practice. Furthermore, any denial that witches do in fact exist is condemned as heresy. The second section documents the activities witches partake. Examples of stories about sexual relations of incubi and succubi, witches taking flight, compacts with demons and how the witch can change physical form at will. Part three considers the tortures and legal procedures that are too be followed during an interrogation and how to best secure a confession. Part of section three is also how to dispose of those found to be guilty of being a witch.

Ultimately, the Malleus Maleficarum remained in print for 114 years, went through 28 editions and was the authoritative source on witchcraft, satanism and how to defend against such practices. There are numerous reprints available in several languages for those interested in learning more about this topic.

For our design we chose to put the cover of the Malleus Maleficarum on the back of the shirt with a simple logo on the front.

Crucifixion is believed by many, debated by others to have begun with the Assyrians and Babylonians but was employed extensively by the Persians in the sixth century B.C. The first crucifixions usually found the victims tied to a tree or post with their feet left hanging freely.

It’s interesting to see how this form of ex*****on made its way around the globe and the changes it went through. Crucifixion made its way to the Mediterranean as a result of Alexander the Great and his invasion of Persia. After that, sometime around the third century the Romans were made aware of the technique. Romans who were, and are well known for their feats of engineering turned their attention to this as a new way to execute and publicly humiliate their victims. Most likely a collaboration between engineers of some level and the carnifex (office of a public ex*****oner) studied and refined this process over the next 500 years.

The Romans felt that crucifixion was an extremely shameful way to die and reserved its use for slaves, foreigners, disgraced soldiers and Christians. The most famous victim of crucifixion is undoubtably Jesus Christ who was crucified on the pretext he was instigating a rebellion against Rome. There is a lot of debate about how he was attached to the cross, but it seems likely that ropes would have been used for support to any spikes that may have been driven.

It was common practice to scourge any victims before crucifying them. The purpose was to cause severe pain and bleeding, further weakening the victim. It was also common for the soldiers to cut off a body part of choice or blind the victim before placing them on the patibulum (crossbar). Death was not a quick relief, depending on the severity of the beating and methods used for attaching to the tree/post or in Roman cases the cross, all played a role. It could take anywhere from a few hours to several days to finally die. Death could be brought on by exposure to the elements, suffocation, multiple organ failure or additional abuse from soldiers or onlookers.

There was an experiment performed in Germany in the 1960’s where volunteers were tied by their wrists to a cross. Within minutes they complained of trouble breathing and their pulse rates doubled with their blood pressure plummeting. After 30 minutes the experiment came to an end as the volunteers were experiencing extreme wrist pain.

Our design demonstrates numerous crucifixions including the inverted crucifixion as Saint Peter experienced as well as various other methods that were used throughout the ages.

Water, much like the previous post about fire has more than likely been used as a tool of torture and ex*****on since long before recorded history.

There are many ways in which water has been (and still is) used a method of extracting information or snuffing out life. Whether the technique is psychological or physical there is little doubt of how impactful it can be on its victims. Verdrinken, a song on our Methods of Ex*****on album goes into detail about the Dutch version of this process. As seen in the “water torture” design our victim is strapped down, feet elevated with a piece of cloth over his mouth, most likely with a piece of iron (bostezo) keeping the mouth open. As the water is poured, it forces the cloth down the throat to varying levels choking and suffocating the victim, then is forcefully removed only to start the exercise over again. The higher the feet are elevated, the more the water has difficulty escaping down the throat, resulting in the victim unable to draw breath or even scream out.

Many victims initially welcomed the water as they mistakenly thought its introduction was a moment of mercy and respite from the horror and dehydration they experienced before. However, once strapped down it was apparent no favors were being shown by their captors.

In 1620 during the Inquisition at Malaga Spain a gentleman by the name of William Lithgow was subjected to water torture. Here in part is his recollection of the ordeal. “The first and second (measures of water) I gladly received, such was the scorching drought of my tormenting pain, and likewise I had drunk none for three days before. But afterward, at the third charge, perceiving these measures of water to be inflicted upon me as tortures,… whereupon my hunger-clunged belly waxing great, grew drum-like imbolstered: for it being a suffocating pain, in regard of my head hanging downward, and the water reingorging itself in my throat with a struggling force; it strangled and swallowed up my breath from yowling and groaning.”

So with all that being said, drink in moderation this weekend;)
