Today is Epiphany, the day that we remember the Magi arriving from the east to greet Jesus, and offer their gifts.

An epiphany is a revelation ... what is revealed in the story of the Wise Men in Matthew 2? That the Kingdom of God is open to people all over the world, that Jesus is for everyone, foreigner and all.

That includes you and every other person in the world. How about that?

January 6 is when we celebrate the Magi meeting Jesus.

"Jesus came into the world to personally experience the human condition, his body from birth to death to resurrection, the living and breathing temple of God With Us. Before we even knew we needed him, he moved to us from eternity and into time. And he called people to move towards him, just as the light in the sky led the Wise Men to his home, or the Angels telling those shepherds to hurry up and run to his side. Yes, people would move towards him, but we can only do so because he first became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood..."

"In a wild turn for us, we had four different Christmas gatherings with family and friends who are family. Presents were exchanged, food was shared, videogames were loudly played, but mostly on those four occasions, we just hung around our house with many of our favorite people and talked for hours. We were present. Our first Christmas season in our new home, in our new town, was FULL of some of our favorite people, which made it beyond meaningful. Which brings me to my favorite Pastoral Pun - it’s not about the presents ..."

Happy New Year, Community!

There's a special prayer in the Methodist tradition, The Wesleyan Covenant Prayer, offered on the first day of the year as a way for us to dedicate the upcoming days and months to God. As we continue the blessing of planting this new church, if you're reading this, why don't you stop for a minute and offer these words up, on this New Year's Day:

“I am no longer my own, but thine.
Put me to what thou wilt,
rank me with whom thou wilt.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed by thee
or laid aside for thee,
exalted for thee or brought low for thee.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things
to thy pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.
And the covenant
which I have made on earth,
let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.”

May it be as God wills and as we have prayed!

It’s the Seventh Day of Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Do you have big plans?

Many of our Christian siblings are attending watch night services this evening, surrounding themselves with prayer, hymns, and readings from scripture. One of those readings comes from the Prophet Micah, who said this:

“6 With what should I approach the Lord
and bow down before God on high?
Should I come before him with entirely burned offerings,
with year-old calves?
7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with many torrents of oil?
Should I give my oldest child for my crime;
the fruit of my body for the sin of my spirit?
8 He has told you, human one, what is good and
what the Lord requires from you:
to do justice, embrace faithful love, and walk humbly with your God.”
— Micah 6:6-8 [CEB]
Micah delivered these words to the powers that be of his time, who did more harm than good, and did it in the name of God. His message is simple: you can make all the sacrifices in the world, give all the gifts possible, but if that isn’t matched with goodness to others, the gifts are found wanting. And, yet, even though we are often found wanting in what we do, Jesus still came down to earth on Christmas Day to meet us, teach us, and save us.

What if your plans for tonight, tomorrow, and into the New Year included being more just, loving, and humble as a way to give thanks to God for the gift of Jesus?

Oh, and be good out there tonight!

Merry Third Day of Christmas to you, Community! It’s ok to still have your Christmas decorations up. Really.

This day is also celebrated as the Feast Day of St. John the Apostle, the one who tradition tells us wrote the Gospel of John, was likely the youngest of the twelve disciples of Jesus, and so close a friend to Jesus that Jesus asked John to take care of Mary as his own mother when he was dying on the cross.

Imagine being the one who knew Jesus well enough to be the first to write, “The Word became flesh and made his home among us. We have seen his glory, glory like that of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.” [John 1:14]

For our Christian siblings that celebrate the saints, John the Apostle is known as the Patron Saint of Friendship (among other things), owing to his devotion to Jesus and to building up the church as an apostle.

Today, this Third Day of Christmastide, pray for opportunities to be a good friend to someone AND the willingness to take those opportunities when they’re presented to you.

Did you know that the Twelve Days of Christmas isn’t just a song, it’s also a season in the church? It’s also called Christmastide and goes from Christmas Day to January 5, the day before Epiphany.

So, Merry 2nd Day of Christmas to you! Christians around the world observe this day as the Feast Day of St. Stephen, whom the Book of Acts tells us is the first martyr of the church. Stephen was a pastor in the first church, defended his faith before the powers that be, AND asked God not to hold his attackers responsible for his persecution.

Today, on this 2nd Day of Christmas, let us remember and pray for those who aren’t in a season of joy, comfort, peace, or love. Let us remember those who are being harmed for who they are, who they were created to be, who stand up for others in the most dire of circumstances, and are unafraid to speak truth to power.

Merry Christmas, Community!

10 The angel said, “Don’t be afraid! Look! I bring good news to you—wonderful, joyous news for all people. 11 Your savior is born today in David’s city. He is Christ the Lord. 12 This is a sign for you: you will find a newborn baby wrapped snugly and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great assembly of the heavenly forces was with the angel praising God. They said, 14 “Glory to God in heaven, and on earth peace among those whom God favors.” - Luke 2

What can we learn from the fact that that there was no room for Mary and Joseph in any of the inns in Bethlehem?

So, so, much.

For one thing, Jesus coming into the world in this way, shows us how God identifies with the poor, the marginalized, those who don't fit in, those for whom there seems to be no place to turn.

For another, the communities Jesus sends us out to build in his name need to be wide open and welcoming to all kids of people - where there's always room.

It's Christmas Eve ... Eve! We're almost there!

Joseph and Mary, during what should have been a time of preparation for the arrival of their Very Special Child*, have to migrate to the small town of Joseph's ancestors, to be counted in a census mandated by the empires in control.

Do you notice the people on the move around you, in difficult seasons?
The holy family found themselves in a city with no room for them, in a community with no place for them.

Who might need a place with you? Hebrews tells us that when we greet strangers, we might be meeting angels in disguise. When Mary and Joseph ran into closed door after closed door in Bethlehem, none of the people who dismissed them would've ever thought that this family and chosen to bring the Son of God into the world - that very night.

Keep your hearts open, community. You just never know what God is bringing your way - you don't want to miss it!

*Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God With Us, Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, Lamb of God Who Takes Away the Sins of the World, etc.

It's Christmas Eve ... Eve Eve.
We're almost there!
Have you seen the Light?
Then how are you going to be a Child of the Light and follow him in his way?
Be a light who follows THE Light.
