The City and County of San Diego are shrinking and/or waving permit fees for accessory dwelling units (ADU), commonly called granny flats bay mistake. ADU’s can have a full kitchen and amenities, they can also be rented out unlike granny flats. ADU’s can create a great environment for aging in place and later as additional income.

If you have an existing granny flat, it is usually simple to turn into a legal rentable ADU with full kitchen.

Kitchen looking in; full house remodel with 1st and 2nd story room addition: we added approximately 100sf to the back of the house to accommodate extra deep countertops with an appliance garage and a large island. The kitchen was designed for universal use with extra wide walk ways, full extension base cabinet draws, pull out corner shelves, and microwave draw in island. We are headed this evening to speak in front of the third Escondido planning commission subcommittee meeting in the Mitchell Room at city hall. It’s the first public input meeting where we will be able to express our clients’ needs and give our input on needed changes for their consideration in loosening the current regulations concerning accessory dwelling units. When the new regulations are adopted this will be a leap forward and help ease some financial tension for a lot of multigenerational families.

The matter is expected to go to the full planning commission review on June 27 at 7:00 pm and it’s our understanding that it will be voted on in late July.

Let’s cross our fingers for needed change and positive results.

We also want to thank the City of San Diego Planning Commission for the unanimous approval of loosening the current regulations on granny flats; also referred to as accessory dwelling units, companion units, junior companion units and multigenerational living. This will help many of our clients to move forward with stalled projects and make it easier for homeowners to add a second housing unit on their property, multigenerational families living together and aging in place.
