Noctiluca is nocti-laughing matter. Even though these formations often ironically resemble tomato soup, they are not desirable as food. So, when these blooms form to feast, they are taking the food out of the mouths of larger marine animals and destroying the food web! So, can’t we just clean up the blooms and fix the problem? Unfortunately, no. This algae is a symptom of a larger environmental problem in marine ecosystems. These blooms dissipate on their own over time, and although they pose a threat to the food web, removing them could have other adverse effects. Continuing to study these blooms will give us the best chance of understanding what causes them and their long-term effects. Here are a few things you can do to help: 👀 Keep an eye on the water on your next beach or boat day. ✋ Give these blooms space when you see them (and keep your furry friends away, too!) ✍️ Report sightings (and send photos) to [email protected].

What “We’re OK” really means when we’re taking down our holiday lights and realize they don’t work anymore. We don’t let some broken bulbs get us down—they could be recyclable! Just remember, NEVER put holiday lights in your curbside recycling bin. They could get tangled in the machinery at the recycling center. Instead, let the pros handle it, and check if your local recycling program accepts holiday lights at your nearest drop off location. If not, head over to a local home improvement or hardware store to ask.
