Today, September 1st, is the big day…School is back in session 😁! The school faculty, staff and administration have been working all summer to get ready to welcome students back and ensure that they are prepared for a successful year. Part of ensuring the success of all students is making sure they are at school every day and on time. Please take a look at our Attendance Matters newsletter for important information from our district attendance teachers.

Dear Steeler Family,

We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to inform you of an important matter that deeply affects our school community.

It is with heavy hearts that we share news of the tragic passing of Aiden Walden, a former Lackawanna School District student who maintained close ties to our community and has siblings within our district currently. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aiden's family during this incredibly difficult time.

In light of this unfortunate event and to ensure we are sensitive to the needs of our students, we have arranged for counseling staff to be available at Lackawanna Middle School on Thursday, July 27 and Friday, July 28, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. No appointments are necessary; students can simply sign in at the middle school office upon arrival to receive assistance.

Our dedicated counseling team is here to offer support, comfort and a safe space for any student or family member who may be struggling to cope with this loss. We understand that grief can be an overwhelming emotion, and we want to ensure that everyone in our school community feels supported during this difficult time.

If you or your child feel the need to speak with a counselor or seek guidance, please don't hesitate to visit the middle school during the specified hours. Our staff is well-trained in providing compassionate support and can help you navigate through this challenging period.

Together we can create a caring and understanding environment for all. Please keep Aiden's family and friends in your thoughts.

Warmly,

Nadia A. Nashir, NBCT

Hello All!
I am currently working with the MS/HS PTSA to garner some support for the organization. As we come to the end of the school year, I want to remind you that there is still time to support and purchase a membership for the 2022-2023 school Year. At this time, the PTSA has not met the goal set by National PTA (25 members) to be in good standing and they are facing losing the MS/HS chapter. THEY NEED 11 more members to reach that goal.
The focus now is to get our PTSA back into “Good Standing” so we can finish the 2022-2023 year and begin a new PTSA year on a positive note as we support our students and families and raise awareness!
I have had many conversations with Western Region PTA, who will be sending in supports to help find our way back, along with administrators and Teachers and Parents about how they would like to move forward.
We also will be looking for 1 teacher representative from MS and 1 from the HS to work with communication with the faculty and staff!

If you would like to join, click on the link below or just give me a call and I can help facilitate your membership or answer any questions you might have.

Dear Families and Neighbors,

I have been in constant communication with Mayor Iafallo and the City's Commissioner of Public Works, and my determination for school on Monday, 11/21/22 and Tuesday, 11/22/22 is to keep us closed.

The City has done a commendable job with their workers, and they needed to hire additional outside contractors too. Even with everyone working 24 hours over the past few days, our streets are still not fully passable and many still need to be cleared for the first time. Considering our school equipment is unable to handle this type of storm, we will be using the same contractors that the City is using once they fully clear our City streets. That is hours to days away from those contractors getting to the schools to be cleared.

Please be aware that Monday and Tuesday are true SNOW DAYS, and no remote/virtual instruction will take place! I did not want to add to anyone's burden by having virtual school, while we all are trying to dig out from this storm! Please concentrate on getting your immediate family squared away, while also helping other family members and your neighbors.

Enjoy your full week off and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Thanks,

Keith Lewis
Superintendent of Schools

Due to anticipated adverse weather over the next 24 - 36 hours the Lackawanna City School District will be closed on Friday November 18, 2022. All afterschool and evening events are also cancelled for November 18, 2022. This is a full SNOW DAY for our students and faculty, so enjoy!!

Please be advised that all students should take their technology home with them as they leave school today in case we receive the weather that they are forecasting and in the event the district needs to pivot to remote instruction next week. As of today, the only day school is closed, is tomorrow November18, 2022.

School will resume Monday, November 21, 2022, unless you receive notification stating otherwise.
