Bold burgers abound with quality ingredients and unique toppings at Newport eateries.

A mainstay on the peninsula since 1977, Malarky’s Irish Pub offers up a wide range of burger options, from those topped with guacamole or chili to a blue cheese and bacon variety with chipotle mayo. But the one that stands above the rest is the savory, smoky pastrami burger. “This is a local’s favorite as it has been on the menu for over 15 years now,” Schiesel says. “The uniqueness of the pastrami piled high on a grilled, house-blended Prime chuck [burger] creates a flavor profile that is second to none.”

An abundance of animals—both resident and migratory—makes summer the ideal time to get out on the water and experience this beloved coastal pastime.

Playful humpback whales start to appear in the spring with even more sightings in the summer, and they tend to put on a show for local whale watchers.

“When we do see humpbacks—or any species—breaching, … a lot of the time people will ask, ‘Why did they do that?’ and there’s really no rhyme or reason as to why,” says Dani Fasser, a licensed boat captain for Newport Whales. “There’s a lot of hypotheses and those include aggression toward other animals and possibly even toward boats as well as play and … sometimes they get foreign material on their bodies and they’re just trying to wash it off. Or social behavior,” she adds, recalling a time that two juvenile humpbacks on either side of the ship mimicked each other with tail slaps, pectoral slaps and, finally, breaching.

The art of mixing textures elevates interior design.

“I think every room needs textures. Layers make spaces feel cozy and more comfortable,” explains Ashley Clark, a Dover Shores resident who serves as principal designer at Skout in nearby Costa Mesa. “They make rooms feel inviting and complete. Even a tiny, tiny powder bath needs layering, [which] could be wallpaper, art [or] an amazing light fixture that is fabric or rope.”

Embrace these swimwear trends for chic looks this season.

“[Newport is] a great city for swimwear for several reasons,” says stylist Andy Drakeford. “The most obvious is all the amazing miles and miles of beaches—not to mention that a huge percentage of homes have swimming pools.”

But swim textiles don’t have to be exclusive to the water anymore, she adds. “Some of the top luxury brands have swimwear pieces in their spring/summer ready-to-wear collections,” she reveals, recommending a light blazer or open shirt layered over a bikini top with shorts or linen trousers.

Designers and local chefs share their tips for a perfect outdoor grill setup.

“We are lucky in California to be able to have indoor and outdoor kitchens,” says Raili Clasen, owner of Raili CA Design. “I treat the outdoor spaces the same as indoor—pendant lights, stone counters and cool cabinets. If space allows, the more counter space, the better. You can use that [area] … for buffet-style dinners or set it up as a self-serve bar.”

Newport Beach’s secondhand stores combat unsustainable fashion, deterring items from ending up in landfills, while providing an assortment of notable styles.

“There is no doubt that the rise in secondhand shopping has encouraged retailers to pay attention to the life cycle of their brand,” says Sarah Davis, president and founder of Fashionphile (left), which has a selling studio in Neiman Marcus at Fashion Island.

Nonprofit Goodwill of Orange County (right) is another big thrift store chain in the area, with a donation center in Newport and both a store and donation center in Costa Mesa. This zero-waste organization provides “the fuel for [its] … mission and a training ground for people on their pathway to career growth and opportunities,” says Victoria Tran, marketing and social media coordinator at OC Goodwill.

Nature’s bolder shades add dimension and personality to any home space.

Bolder colors also look best in rooms with ample natural light, says interior designer Lindye Galloway. “Getting a sense for a room’s natural light throughout the day can have a huge impact on the type of colors you infuse,” she says. “I begin by looking at a room holistically. I think about the color tones and patterns I want to mix into the space. Then, I try to build a design that is balanced, curated and [has] just the right amount of variation.”
