PAPA'S POLYDACTYLS is my vision of what happens at the Hemingway House when all the tourists go home for the day and the kitty cats are left to their own devises....they lounge next to the pool until dinner is served!

The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West is home to approximately 60 polydactyl (six-toed) cats.

Cats normally have five front toes and four back toes. About half of the Hemingway cats have the physical polydactyl trait but they all carry the polydactyl gene in their DNA, which means that the ones that have 4 and 5 toes can still mother or father six-toed kittens. Sometimes it looks as if they are wearing mittens because they appear to have a thumb on their paw!

St. Armands Key is a beautiful little island between the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay.

- St. Armands Circle was the vision of circus showman John Ringling?

Ringling bought the island in 1917 and planned the upscale shopping roundabout. His influence is seen today in the design of the streets radiating from the island’s hub and the Italian statuary from his personal collection.

I just love visiting St. Armands Circle. When there's lots of people and activity, I feel so inspired to paint! I love all the colorful clothes...the Hawaiian shirts, the flowing dresses, the preppy shorts!

The best thing about painting is the freedom to take a mundane scene and make it come to life.

I do this by changing the composition and color - I make a scene more interesting by giving it more or less sky; moving trees from the foreground to background; or even adding cars and boats.

Conversely, I can also subtract elements to make the subject less cluttered. Changing the colors has limitless possibilities!

I’ve put my inspiration photo in comments so you can compare “real life” to my artist’s eye!

“DON'T WORRY, BE CRABBY" is a colorful watercolor of a couple mischievous crabs that have managed to save themselves and are pretty happy about it. I especially liked painting all the colorful buoys to give the painting lots of punch!

Meet the famous furry residents of the Hemingway House in Key West!

These polydactyl cats, descendants of Ernest Hemingway's original pets, roam freely through the historic grounds, charming visitors with their extra toes and playful antics. Each cat has a unique personality and a story to tell, adding a purr-fect touch of feline charm to this literary landmark.

"Key West Lighthouse" is a close up of this famous landmark. It's 88 steps to the top and the view from there is amazing. Seeing all the bright red Royal Poinciana trees from that vantage point is really quite amazing.
