Bird taxidermy. Hand Carved Decoys. Photography

A sight we see so often on the salt marshes, but when captured without motion, it brings new beauty to light. Buffleheads get a bad rap with how common they are and how you can usually scratch at least one of them on the slowest of days. But, I truly admire their beauty! The colors of their head are an obvious attention getter, but I enjoy as well, the contrast in their black, white, and gray plumage. I also love their chubby, butterball appearance, everything about them is round, especially their heads. And you can’t forget those big pink feet. I love when they throw them out at the last second to help slow down when landing.

Gotta love a sprig!

This one just went home. They sure are regal birds!!

Does anyone know how they got their name?

A drake Red Breasted Merganser about to grab a Yellow Perch. It’s fun to create a story with a mount. Who knows how many fish this guy ate in his lifetime. I’ve seen 5 fish about the size of the one here, in the crop of a Common Merganser before. It’s unreal just how big of a fish they can swallow and how much fits in their crop. I don’t know about you guys, but I think those Perch are pretty fish!

Another black duck I recently finished up. I sure love these birds!

I carved this decoy a year or so ago and just hadn’t got it in the water until today. Our scout showed a few mergansers around and I wanted to put it to use. I carved it mostly as a confidence decoy for a puddle duck rig but knew I’d use it from time to time to target these giants. I don’t shoot many of them so every now and again it’s cool to see a nice drake. I think I’ll go back and make some changes on the decoy. A little more rosy breast, and darker tail and head. I had originally made the breast nice and rosy but didn’t quite like it so I dry brushed white over it and it got a bit too light. But, otherwise I loved how it looked on the water and this pair came in to land right beside it. I have two more cut out to make, and I may add a hen too, for realism. I do love gunning over my own blocks!

Goldeneyes! They’re always fun to work on and I love hearing those whistling wings!

Resting black duck.

One of my favorite geese I’ve ever mounted.

Look closely at this guys foot. His toes are all about half the length they should be. It makes you wonder what happened, but it also shows us just how tough these birds really are. Imagine having something like that happen to you without going to a doctor or having any pain medication.

Cute little fellow.

One of my favorite wigeon I’ve had the privilege work on. These custom habitat bases really set a bird apart and add so much to a mount.

Always love seeing this one pop up in my feed. Can’t wait to do another like it! I may just do one for myself.

I so enjoy these birds! There’s just so much to look at. That big fluffy square head, the red and white wing is an obvious eye catcher, and those yellow scapular feathers and feet compliment each other very well. On top of all of that the intricate patterns and details are just incredible. What’s not to love?!

This was by far the worst neck damage I’ve ever seen. It looked like it was shot at about 10 yards with BBB or T shot. No exaggeration- there was a hole larger than a quarter and a few larger than a penny, plus many more. I’d guess around 20. I was very skeptical about how this would turn out. Check out the pic in the comments to see what I was working with. The picture doesn’t show the worst of the holes either. This is where having awesome clients who take your advice really helps. I don’t want to mount something in a pose that will show off the worst and I don’t want my client to have to look at it. We decided on a low, tucked neck rather than flying and it covered up enough of the damage that he can now have a mount to enjoy looking at, yet still show all the things you want to see on a White Wing.

Saying goodbye to this guy after a few hunts over it. Glad to see someone else enjoy it now. Glad to have the memories and some cool pics of it like this one. If you’re still looking for a last minute Christmas gift get ahold of me!

It was fun to get started on another decoy. I don’t so as many of these as I’d like. But I was happy when a client asked me to make one for him. It brought back some inspiration. I pulled out a few more that need finished as well. If you’re looking for a last minute Christmas idea I do have some available for sale or could possibly squeeze one in for ya.

An absolutely beautiful wood duck! Birds like this make me love my job!

Black duck in a marsh scene.

12/04/2023

One I finished up a bit ago, just haven’t been on social media as much lately.

What a beautiful bird, I can’t believe I was fortunate enough to mount this bird. These little guys are so neat! I can’t wait to get one as nice as this one day. Being able to put together a little habitat for a bird is so much fun and adds so much to a mount! This piece was created mostly with materials collected from the marsh the bird came from.

It’s that time of year! Good luck to everyone no matter what you’re after. I’ll be sitting in a tree as we approach my favorite time of the year!

A Hooded Merganser I finished up a few months ago. I forgot to get a finished picture of it, unfortunately. I really loved how the whole thing turned out. The pose of the bird and the custom driftwood/snow/ice habitat base I made for it. These guys look so good with snowy scenes!
