State Representative Denise Mentzer

State Representative for Michigan's 61st House District

The Michigan Legislature passed the final state budget for the 2025 fiscal year. Democratic leaders crafted a budget focused on strategic, targeted investments that improve the lives of people and hometowns across Michigan without raising taxes.

I’m proud to have passed a budget that directly invests in our community by providing funding for our military and veterans, implementing environmental protections and addressing infrastructure concerns. Investing $15 million at Selfridge Air National Guard Base will greatly help our military attract new fighter missions. These strategic funds will go a long way in strengthening our community and ensuring stability for years to come for our residents.

The budget includes funding for several items that will specifically benefit Macomb County residents. Notable highlights include:

- $15 million for capital improvements and infrastructure projects necessary to shift the runway placement at Selfridge Air National Guard Base to help attract new aircraft flying missions.
- $2 million for Macomb Community College Institute of Public Safety.
- $25 million for local water infrastructure projects.
- $2 million for Mount Clemens Riverfront Revitalization.
- $1.5 million for Mount Clemens Septic Station Project.

As storm roll through and some experience a loss of power, make sure to check on your neighbors, keep your fridge closed to preserve food and find a cool, safe place for medications.

As crews work hard to restore power outages across the state, always be alert of crew members, assume down power lines are active and anticipate increased traffic times.

Two years ago, the Supreme Court overturned the constitutionally protected right to safe, legal abortion in Dobbs v, Jackson.

House Democrats understand that abortion access and reproductive health care are equity issues. That’s why we ensured women with fewer resources can access the care they need.

Here in Michigan, we repealed the state’s 1931 ban on abortion care and delivered more accessible care with the Reproductive Health Act. We also ensured Michigan families can make their own decisions about IVF and surrogacy through the Assisted Reproduction and Surrogacy Parentage Act.

Michigan is a place where your reproductive freedoms are safe.

I'm excited to announce that at last Wednesday's School Board meeting, I presented Mount Clemens Community Schools with an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) donated by the NFL Foundation!

This life-saving device will be placed in a school within the district, enhancing emergency preparedness for cardiac emergencies during athletic events.

Having an AED readily available can make all the difference in saving a life. This is a big win for student safety in Mount Clemens!

This past Saturday, June 15th, we had a fantastic turnout for the Clinton River Cleanup Event organized with the amazing Clinton River Watershed Council! Huge thanks to everyone who came out and lent a helping hand. Together, we collected a ton of trash and made a real difference for our local waterway.

The Clinton River is a vital part of our community, and it deserves our care. Thanks to all the volunteers, the river is cleaner and healthier for everyone to enjoy!

Happy Juneteenth! Today, Michiganders across the state celebrate and honor the resilience, courage and strength of our ancestors who fought for freedom and justice.

Last week's committee vote brings us closer to enacting vital mental health legislation for our veterans. I remain committed to providing comprehensive mental health services to those who sacrificed for our freedoms.

Knowing what benefits are available and how to access them is crucial in getting veterans the care they deserve. HB 5736 requires employers to post info on veteran benefits & services. Our veterans deserve all the support we can provide.

Incredible show of skill and strength yesterday at Selfridge. Beautiful jets flying in unity. I got totally emotional when the American flag was dropped and when the F-16 Thunderbirds flew over. Cheered with the crowd when a new group of recruits were sworn in on the airfield. No better day to live in Michigan and the USA. God Bless our troops and God bless America.

Today, we mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the courageous Allied invasion of Normandy that turned the tide in World War II. On June 6th, 1944, countless brave men and women from the United States, Britain, Canada, and other Allied nations embarked on a daring mission to liberate Europe from N**i tyranny.

Their courage and sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds paved the way for victory and a brighter future for the world. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to these heroes, and all those who fought for freedom during the Second World War.

Let us never forget their sacrifices, and continue to honor their legacy by promoting peace, democracy, and the values they fought to defend.

Last week on Wednesday, I was thrilled to have two bills of mine signed into law by the Governor.

The first bill, HB 4185, will prohibit MIOSHA from reducing asbestos-related violation penalties by an amount or percentage that is greater than what the federal OSHA uses.

As your State Representative, I will always prioritize what is best for the hardworking people across the great State of Michigan. This bill package strengthens Michigan’s commitment to these hard workers who are at risk for asbestos exposure.

The second bill, HB 4596, seeks to protect sewer systems from improper disposal of single-use wipes and would require disposable wipes to be appropriately labeled “Do Not Flush.”

Flushed disposable wipes can cause costly damage to waste systems and can stay in the environment for hundreds of years. Even wipes advertised as flushable have caused significant damage to sewer systems, costing taxpayers money to fix the infrastructure.

I will always advocate for water quality here in Michigan. I believe that everyone has the right to clean, safe water, and I will always fight to protect our water resources and infrastructure.

This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We are deeply grateful for their dedication and courage in protecting our freedoms and ensuring the liberties we cherish today.

As we enjoy time with loved ones, let's remember the true meaning of this day. Reflect on the sacrifices made, reach out to veterans, and share their stories. Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day.

Today, we gathered together to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our Country. As we remember their sacrifices let us pledge to keep the memories of our fallen heroes alive, not only today, but everyday, in our thoughts, in our actions and in our hearts.

I joined Amvets Post 29, VFW Post 1794, American Legion Post 4 and the Marine Corps League as the keynote speaker at Clinton Grove Cemetery today.

Happy Infrastructure Week! We are making investments that will transform how we look and think about transportation. We are envisioning mobility in new ways — looking at innovative ways of getting around in this year's budget.

The budget also includes funding to implement the Clean Energy program — $5.5 million for grants to businesses, nonprofit organizations and local governments for planning, developing or constructing renewable energy and electrification infrastructure projects. As well as investing $82.2 million in drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects.

Last Wednesday I spoke on the House floor in support of my amendment to increase the budget appropriation for Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Democrats and Republicans from Macomb County stood together in solidarity. Selfridge is a key component of our state's disaster response and vital to the continued safety of our nation. We are proud of Selfridge and proud of the men and women deployed there.

To celebrate Earth Day, I encourage Michiganders to get involved! Create a plan for your family to start or continue recycling, picking up trash around your neighborhood, or go for a bike ride to enjoy the fresh air.

Together we can build a brighter, healthier future for Michigan, with clean air, clean water, and clean energy!
