Here we go again. J.D. Power releases their 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study with Lexus and Toyota topping the list.
There are some surprises on the list, though. However, Lexus and Toyota being on top is part of the survey that many will get behind. How about how other auto brands rank? https://www.automotiveaddicts.com/94265/lexus-toyota-top-2024-jd-power-vehicle-dependability-survey-overall-results-decrease

As expected, Toyota not only took the top spot in Consumer Reports latest reliability stats, their hybrid models continue to shine with generally higher reliability than the non-hybrid version. Now, before we get to the detail and folks start flaming 🔥 up the comment section, READ 📖 the analysis below...
First up, and most importantly, CR changed a bit of their process this year. Responses to CR's survey and CR membership is way down over the past 2 decades. While CR once crunched data on over 1.3 million vehicles per survey, this survey covers just 330,000 vehicles with model years from 2001-2023. (Just ~70K between MY 2021-2023). While previously CR excluded vehicles and brands with too few responses for them to use the data, they decided to give up on that and just use the limited data anyway.
That last part is critical, because CR's data set skews heavily towards Asian brands with little to no data for many model years on popular American models. For instance: Dodge as a brand contains data only about Durango despite the Charger being the best selling full-sized sedan in America and the Challenger being the best selling 2-door for 9 of the last 10 years.
Now into the deets! As you'd expect, Toyota and Lexus lead the charts, not the least of which is due to the heavy percentage of hybrids they sell. Overall hybrids from all car companies have 26% fewer problems than non-hybrids with Toyota models widing that gap further. Want to save gas and have high reliability? It's clear hybrids are the way to go.
The most reliable hybrids? Those are an interesting pairing of RAV4 Prime (PHEV) and Kia Sportage which topped the charts. Sadly the Escape was merely average.
Across the board sedans are more reliable than SUVs, trucks or minivans. Tundra and Sienna are two of the three least reliable Toyota models with Tundra continuing to be the second least reliable full-sized truck in America. (The least reliable is the F-150 Hybrid). The key thing about this is that brands that skew heavily towards SUVs and trucks will seem lower than a more "blended" company.
Now to the big gaping holes in the data. Here are just some of the vehicles missing from this data set. Not that it would change the data, but the gap at Dodge is enormous. Durango is the only model represented yet it accounts for only 25% of the brand's sales. Also odd, check out the number of Mercedes models missing.
Charger, Challenger
Santa Fe
5-Series, 7-Series
CX-9, CX-90
All Porsches except Cayenne/Macan
Camaro, Trax, Malibu, Traverse, Bolt
Nautilus
Acadia
Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer
A-Class, E-Class, S-Class, GLS, EQE, GLC, GLS, CLA, CLS
Cubman
Final thoughts: The ultimate trouble with reliability surveys like this continues to be a small response rate and an insular dataset. There isn't a good solution to this, but it has a circular theme. Those interested in reliability subscribe to CR, buy a Toyota, report on the Toyota, then re-subscribe to CR and based on CR data they buy another Toyota. This has the effect of solid data on Toyota reliability but a limited knowledge of the reliability on less reliable brands. A possible solution would be a survey based on randomly selected participants based on car registration data, but we don't have a survey like that because it would be expensive to implement and response rates would be low.
