I’ve been working with Deborah for the past few weeks. Her end goal is to lose some weight for her anniversary in July. Now we are already down 5 pounds which is cool but what I find more valuable is when she tells me she already doesn’t need to take her pain medicine because her joint pain has been diminished, her energy has improved and I can see the confidence radiating in her face to see that she’s a little closer to fitting in the jeans that are 2 sizes to small. This was mostly from changing her diet and getting her to move more functionally in which we are dialing in more and more every week 📈

The takeaway from this post is create small wins for yourself in your fitness journey.

Do you crave less sweets now that you’ve been focused on nutritious foods make you feel good..that’s a win

Do you feel strong and more capable by yourself..that’s a win

The marathon continues as the great said. Creating that winning mindset, brick by brick 🧱 small win by small win and before you know you have surpassed your original goal and now you have built a house that can weather any storm because we slowly built better habits, slowly progressed the training so we can learn and actually practice these movements so we can avoid injuries and lastly, count every win along the way in which builds momentum and confidence.

By the way, Deborah is a badass. Such a strong woman with so much dedication and commitment and I couldn’t be more proud to have her as a client 💪

LEG DAY STAPLES!

These are a few key lower body movements that I use in client programming very often! For current program of toning the lower body, here is what each movement consists of:

1️⃣ Barbell Squats 3 sets of 10-12

2️⃣ Barbell Hip Thrust 3 sets of 12-15

3️⃣ Walking Lunges 3 sets of 20 (10 reps each leg)

This is a momma that came in to see me at 7weeks postpartum after C-section.
The longer you wait to reconnect with those deep core muscles that were impacted by 9months of pregnancy and then surgery like c-section, the more you are building patters of movement (to compensate for a weakness of inner muscles) that might contribute to aches and pains down the line. As our body always follows path of least resistance, even when it’s not serving us in the big picture.
C-section is considered a major surgery, but unfortunately currently there’s no standard protocol that you are given, besides handing you the baby and sending you home to heal.
As you can see, early c-section rehab isn’t going to be anything like your normal pre-pregnancy workouts. It’s one of the most vulnerable time in women’s life so we need to treat it accordingly 🙏🏻

Bosu ball push-ups with the feet elevated.

This a progression from regular push-ups. With push-ups of any kind one of the great benefits you get is the ability to work and train your scapula through a full range of motion by extended all the way out at the top. This gets muscles like the pec minor and serratus anterior involved that tend to sometimes get overlooked.

The serratus anterior is a very important muscle for any overhead throwing athlete so doing push-ups through a full range of motion is important. Two of the functions of the serratus anterior are protraction of the scapula (moving it forward) and rotating it upward (moving the scapula laterally and upward).

To make sure we are getting the serratus anterior involved I watch the scapula in the back to see if it’s protracting and rotating upward. It’s not enough to just do an exercise. We need to know if the right muscles are working.
