Rescue mission: this Cooper's Hawk was injured and has an injured right wing. Some Canadian visitors were trying to give it water but it would not drink.
After careful consideration, I couldn't leave it there to take on the heat of the day so I took one of my supplies boxes and a spare coat and carefully picked up the bird after a small but sedate chase and we took it along tour until we got to the Furnace Creek Visitors Center for a hand off to the park staff who will arrange for a rehabilitation with a nearby outfit.
The hawk was resting here, in the comfort of air conditioning and when transferred to another container was awake again.
Good luck Cooper's Hawk!
Waking up at 3:00am while on vacation may seem tough but the best rewards are not easily attained.
Milky Way views on the way to Death Valley.
And our burrowing owl buddy.
The at is coming along nicely. A view from the hillside by Library #2.
Looking forward to this being completed and accessible.

Enter Hot Creek Geologic Site. On second thought, do not enter. At any time geysers with boiling hot water can appear without warning as can new hot springs with seismic activity. 3 miles below the Earth's surface is the magma that is heating up water which then rises back up.
Looking forward to going back in the winter.
Setting sun in the land of the 'Rising Sun'.
Sometimes real life doesn't look so real.
Short clips of the sky at night over Alabama Hills.
More astro action in the Alabama Hills. I did get a UFO sighting, which is normal near this part of the world. A blazing orange light that quickly raced behind the White Mountains doing very sudden dips.
Too fast to catch but check out how much light the moon was casting.
Alabama Hills night time cell phone astrophotography.
Death Valley
Racetrack Playa, one of the flattest places on the planet that is famous for the sailing stones.
The only tracks we saw were human bonehead off-roaders who illegally left their tire tracks on the playa.
Eureka Dunes, tied for the tallest dunes in North America, and we climbed up almost to the top.
We stopped short of getting fully sand blasted.
Surprise guest in Stella's Cabin, Death Valley.
If you've been on tour with me you probably know my thoughts on the wild rabbits. Imagine driving down the road at night and they do this...

It is summer and the lizards are busy. Check out the action with the Leopard Lizards on Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes!
In a bit of irony, I take my daughter camping near Area 51 for some night sky watching and see beautiful galaxy views but nothing top secret or interesting but I get home and there is a stealth bomber in the sky.
Two Sunrises
Crazy Stars
First sunrise tour of the year in the books. Passed a few rattlesnakes on the way. The galaxy was showing along the way. Then the heat crept in as we exited the valley. The perfect play for Death Valley in the summer.
Good luck!
Just hanging out, being cool, catching some rays, checking the ladies.
Master Blister Beetle seeking out some Brittle Bush. Although the bright colors make it look venomous, they are not but they do have a bite.
Found ourselves a nice thick rattlesnake on Wild Rose Road. Trying out the snake stick. May have to switch to tongs.
When you've been checking something out for years and finally go do it.
Hole in the wall on the Peek-a-boo Loop in Bryce Canyon.
Get home from work and what do I see climbing the wall in the garage? A centipede! Can't let this go in the house.
Sorry 'pede.
Young Red Tailed Hawk out for a stroll on the road? This youngin' was almost hit so don't mind my attempts to coax it off of the road!
What can you find while exploring Zion? These were not some deer dentures dropped in the woods. Instead, the mandible of a Desert Big Horn Sheep.
Looks like a mountain lion may have gotten this one.
My, what big ears you have. The better to hear you with so I can fly away and sleep in peace!
Sorry for waking you!
Chilling at Dante's View eating orange flowers.
