Welcome PRECIOUS 17 yo Snowshoe, SASSY 9yo longhair Snowshoe, and BEAR 8yo orange longhair, to SWFR! These sweet babies were left to us in a trust when their owners passed away unexpectedly. We weren’t aware that they were coming to us, but of course we took them in! Precious and Sassy were in the house and had been confiscated by AC because of no next of kin and, of course, it was a fight to get them out of TAF…and cost us $300. Bear was indoor/outdoor and could not be found for a week, but the executor of the will called us and we went and scooped him up. All three went straight to the vet, and had full workups , with a clean bill of health. Precious has no teeth so she looks like Grumpy Cat 😂. Bear had to be shaved because of mats. We could definitely use some help with their vet bills and food. They are only some of the new ones we’ve taken in, and we will be posting introductions to those cats later. 😻😻😻 WELCOME ANAKIN TO SWFR! This four-year-old has a head tilt and is a little wobbly, walks in circles sometimes. Long story, but Anakin was pulled by someone for another rescue, but the person was not a foster for the rescue. They just offered to pick up the cat then they contacted the Rescue. She was told that she was expected to foster for quite a while. This was a person who was not vetted by the rescue and had no intention of fostering, and was only providing transport as far as she knew. The Rescue said they were full; the person who pulled then contacted other rescues with no response. She went so far as to have this cat seen at her own expense by a vet who told her The cat was CH. When she sent me video of Anakin, I knew it was not CH, it was most likely vestibular disease. She filled out a surrender form with us yesterday and said that, if the cat was not taken, she was going to have to put it back outside- not a good place for cat with a neurological issue right now. Needless to say we had her meet us at our vet, . We took over care of Anakin and he is currently at the clinic awaiting neuter and, a little dental work and an exam to see if he has a polyp causing his condition. This unexpected rescue is going to cost us some… I’d be lying ifI said we didn’t need Donations…because we desperately need them. We are almost out of funds for the first time in a long time. 😻😻😻 WELCOME MARILYN TO SWFR!! We named her after her finder, Marilyn Lira. This tiny sweet older girl was found in the desert by some folks walking their dogs. She was dehydrated and starving in the 114 degree heat. They took her to a vet to check for a chip and get help for her. No chip found but the vet wouldn’t treat her because she was not their cat! So they nursed her for two weeks while looking for her owners, but no one came forward. Unable to keep her they looked for help. We were tagged on her post and recognized that she was a little old Bengal girl who needed a place to go. She is sick with a URI at minimum. Our amazing vet, , met us at the clinic and we dropped her off for evaluation and treatment. Marilyn is at least 10 yo, and needed fluids today, with bloodwork, f***l, snap, chip and vaccines to be started tomorrow. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. And as much as we hate this part, we really need your help with $$ for her care and medical. We are close to being out of funds, since we’ve had so many medical cats lately. We currently have five other cats hospitalized as well. If we can get a long term foster for this handsome blind guy, we will pull him, but we have no safe space for a blind cat right now. The commitment would have to be long term or forever foster, or foster-to-adopt. No dog door, no young children. A quiet home with a room he can acclimate in. We know it’s a lot to ask, but we’re trying. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

A1326985 Smokey is a white and gray colored, 6-year-old, 10-pound, neutered male Domestic Long-Haired cat.
He entered the shelter as an owner surrender on 07-01-2024 due to the fact they have to many cats. He was altered by our medical team.
Smokey is a friendly, easy to handle boy here at the shelter. Our staff describes him as a shy, quiet, and very reserved. He is blind to that may be part of that reason for his disposition and he startles easy. He enjoys being pet and scratched and if it is quiet and peaceful he enjoys being next to someone. Smokey will be loving family member in his new forever home.

🆘 🆘🆘 NEED HELP WITH THIS ONE!! Pic in comments WARNING: It’s graphic. Kitten relinquished at vet with ruptured eye. Was seen in May with minor eye infection, and given medication. Brought back yesterday with the eye obviously not treated and ruptured. We were asked to take the kitten in lieu of euthanasia. She was named MOODY by the staff. She deserves a chance, but treatment and enucleation surgery is not cheap, even with discounts that we get get. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help us help her! Donation links are on our website. 😻❤️😻 Welcome 12yo Ragdoll mixes, ANN and ANDY to SWFR! And yes, they are raggedy, but not for long! Intake hold is a pipe dream, because these cats needed saved at the last minute off the euthanasia list at the kill shelter. They were part of an animal abuse case 😩. Both are currently at our amazing Vet, , and are being fully worked up. Andy has an elevated WBC, and Ann is FIV positive. They are so utterly terrified, but hopefully will soon realize they are safe, saved, and loved. Please, please consider donating for their medical care and upkeep. We can’t help without YOUR help! ❤️❤️❤️ Remember little THUMPER from a few weeks ago? Part of a litter a homeless woman had. Thanks to , her eyes have improved significantly! She does have sight, and is a spitfire! Her hind leg stump is being watched and may require amputation down the road, but for now, Thumper is doing great! We are so glad that with your help and donations we are able to help this little lady who’s had a rough hand dealt to her in life. 😻😻😻

😻❤️😻 WELCOME TO ONE LOVE! That’s her name and at 14 yo, we can’t change it 😂. Love came off the euth list at the kill shelter. She was an owner surrender and we just can’t figure out why. She is well cared for and beautiful, and she is a purebred blue Tonkinese. Love does have a heart murmur according to the shelter and she is missing some hair but overall she looks great and we will get her into the vet this week. She’s a very gentle girl who is so confused by her situation. If you’d like to contribute to Love’s care, we would greatly appreciate it. It takes a lot to vet and feed these cats. 🙌😻👏❤️ Whoo Hoo! Our ASPEN, one of three cats we are treating for FIP utilizing, in part, the new GS formulation. Since the Stokes GS was released after our cats had begun treatment, we switched over as soon as it was available and ordered it through our Vet . Aspen completed treatment yesterday and is now in the observation period. Her bloodwork is stellar! We are so happy to have GS now available in the United States, at a reasonable cost and with less pills needed per dose. F**k FIP! 😻🤗🎉❤️

❤️❤️❤️ WELCOME TALIA AND TABITHA! Saved these one day old newborns yesterday. Two Tortie girls. They were left in a box with their placentas at our Petsmart. WHO DOES THAT?! We swooped them up, had them checked out by our vet, and got them into the best neonate care around. We are backing them for veterinary care until they are adopted so that will include their vaccines, spays, and anything else they might need. Unfortunately, their poor mama is probably out there missing her babies and will now go back into heat quickly. Please don’t take babies from their mamas. You have to take them all. Spaying could have prevented this. These babies are a couple of the lucky ones… very lucky…. Donations towards their medical greatly appreciated.

😻🐈‍⬛❤️ WELCOME THUMPER TO SWFR! Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do…and Thumper was one that we could not say no to. She came from a homeless person, via an intermediary. She was born with the stump leg, but either infection, congenital condition, or something else caused the eyes to have the conjuctiva adhere to the eyeball. Thumper is currently hospitalized with one of our vets, and is being worked up. It’s possible she could lose one or both eyes down the road, but treatment is being tried first. Doc thinks the leg may only need a protective cover, and we can reassess later on as to whether it will require surgery or not. Thumper was an unexpected save, and will need some care, above the usual pcr f***l, snap, vaccines, possible bloodwork, etc.

WELCOME TIGGER TO SWFR! Cat Papa Jim is making a Pate’s Feeder for our new assumed CH baby, Tigger. Tigger and his bonded sister came to us when the Henderson shelter asked us to take them. Tigger displays high-moderate CH symptoms, but the jury is still out as to whether it’s true CH or another neuro condition caused by infection or virus. We’re praying it’s just CH, and not something progressive. 🙏🏻😻😊❤️

WELCOME TRIXIE TO SWFR! Trix was an owner surrender because she did not like the puppy they got and so began having accidents all over the house. We know, we know, she was there first , but we don’t judge because it doesn’t help the cat. Trixie is a 7yo Devon Rex, who has skin issues and has Coccidia. She is currently staying at our vet clinic while being treated. Trixie has not had one accident since being with us, and while a little hissy to others, she is basically easygoing. She will stay in sanctuary because of her skin issues, which will be ongoing. She’s attached herself to Cat Papa Jim, so enough said…😂😻❤️

WELCOME ADRIAN TO SWFR! We are so far behind on posting new cats, and we have taken in many. So we will be posting a cat or two a day until we catch up and you have met all of them! ADRIAN was found by a caring person who was feeding her and even took her to a vet. She was told that Adrian was about 16yo, and could have kidney disease. The finder was unable to keep her, and reached out to multiple rescues for help. No one stepped up, so we had her admitted to our vet and worked up. That was a month ago! Adrian is doing well, and is affectionate on her terms. She will need a dental soon, so donations towards that will be greatly appreciated! FYI, our new website, with links and QR codes for donations will be up by next week, so please watch for that news. We have PP, Venmo, and Zelle. Thank you all for your continued support.

Three words of advice for reaching out to animal rescuers: assume the best.

Assume that if you’re reaching out to someone who does animal rescue, you’re reaching out to someone who has a huge heart. Assume that they care deeply about saving lives. Assume that if they don’t respond to you right away, or at all, it’s because they’re so busy helping animals. Assume that you’re the 10th, 20th, or 100th person to reach out to them today asking for help. Assume that if they can’t help you, it’s because they are already at max capacity. Assume that you do not know or see a fraction of what is on their plate. Assume that they might be exhausted. Assume that they might be grieving, or tender. Assume that they are a loving, kind person who is a source of good for the world. Assume that they are worthy of being treated with consideration and respect. Assume that they are human.

Because 9 times out of 10, if you assume these things about an animal rescuer, you will be right. So when you reach out to an animal rescuer, let your words be filled with gratitude, patience, and understanding. Don’t use your words to jab at animal rescuers for not being available enough, not doing more, not “caring,” not being able to single-handedly save the world. Treat animal rescuers with compassion, not just when they can help you, but even—and especially—when they can’t. And when they can’t, don’t assume the worst. Assume the best.
