There are SOME conversations that I will decide to end after only a few responses. I’m speaking about communicating with people who call themselves educators. If you don’t WANT to change, that’s fine. We already know that what we’ve been doing in literacy for students isn’t working for far too many students and their families. Some of this failure is generational. If you seriously want change but aren’t willing to put in the effort to see that happen, you and I have NOTHING to discuss. I WILL immediately block you so that I can have conversations with people who WANT to be more intentional about what we know needs to happen for BOTH students and educators. Don’t be offended: It’s me not you. 🤷🏾♀️

Just thought about the last 15 years of my life. A hell of a lot has happened!! But I’m good.
I want ALL students to read/write better. We’ve begun improving what is done for K thru 3. Unfortunately, if we don’t IMMEDIATELY begin to address the needs of upper elementary, middle school and high school students, we are going to create a whole new generation of illiterate and low readers/writers. Is THAT the plan?

You know, now that school has started, I’m wondering how many districts/schools are going to give book-reading assignments WITHOUT doing the necessary TEACHERWORK before sharing those books or requiring students to read them. 🧐🤔

As our children grow up, we don’t STOP being parents. The dynamic just changes. You are NEVER really done as a PARENT. We don’t QUIT.
There is NO POINT where a parent should decide that their ADULT offspring no longer need help. We just have to wait for the ask.

I know there’s now legislation here in GA to screen K thru 3 students for dyslexia. I’m happy about that. Now, what about students who have moved beyond grade 3? Where is THAT legislation? Dyslexia doesn’t disappear after grade 3. Where is the intention to find students who have moved BEYOND grade 3, carrying those SAME challenges? What will be done for upper grades, MS, and HS students? This CAN’T be the state’s final solution. Can anyone tell me where we sit on helping students who have moved beyond grade 3?
This is makin me SCREAM!!!! YES!!!! You don’t KNOW my story!!!

The CURRENT education system we have SHOWS me that this country is only intentional about preparing CERTAIN students for a productive future. That’s the reality I’m WITNESSING. It is NOT a system designed to serve ALL students. For me, as an educator, that a difficult pill to swallow. PERIOD.
I need to remove this weight and get some rest for the night.
I don’t understand an education system that punishes students with IEPs by separating them from other learners. That seems more like a pipeline-to-prison type of action. Is our system one that will SUPPORT students with an IEP or SINGLE them out and make them feel even MORE alienated than they already do? What kind of system DO we currently have? Is it one that moves in the best interest of ALL students or only those who have the resources to PAY for additional support?
Where is the space for parents to get support for their child with an IEP when they feel like the school system is railroading them?
So, first, don’t judge me for the lateness of the hour. I’m getting ready for bed as my 2-year old granddaughter is “reading” a book about Cheetahs that I planned to read to her before we went to sleep. What I’m listening to is developing language. What’s funny is the intonation in her voice as she does this pretend reading. Periodically she chuckles, goes “awww” as if she’s seen something cute, and she’s turning the pages. She is also holding the book upright. These are all things she’s seen me do in the past as I’ve read to her. Her jumbled 2-year old words aren’t all clear to me except when she occasionally goes “Hey!” or “I don’t know” for whatever reason. It is absolutely AMAZING to listen in and watch this development. I am SO HONORED to be in her space as she grows. THIS is a true blessing, particularly for me as a nerdy educator.❤️
Morning PSA: Every educator should understand that high frequency words and sight words are NOT the same thing.
I’m listening to this and understanding how important it is that this information be shared and heard. Comorbidity is discussed early, that is, what ELSE can happen along with dyslexia. It’s interesting and disturbing to me that in Black & Brown students, only ADHD is most often diagnosed but NOT dyslexia. We NEED to do better for students.
Listening to this episode also helps me to understand how CRITICAL it is that educators have the KNOWLEDGE/TRAINING to instructionally support learners.

BEST explanation about student failure EVER: “School wasn’t good at you.” You are NOT a failure!!! The system failed YOU.
