"Excellent content. I think this applies to adults as well. Active reading and comprehension." This highly engaged momma is absolutely correct!😆 Students and adults alike need "actively" read by note taking. Reading is not a passive pastime, but takes actions such as "capture and create" notes by way of: ✍️Underline ✍️ Highlight ✍️Drawing ✍️Circling Ahead Of The Curve summer students will get a crash course in this note taking skill invaluable for upper elementary and middle school learners. ☀️Send me a DM and I will send details on how to register for the Summer 1 BE-Readers program starting in June!
🗣️Highly Engaged Parents, But how can you make reading a habit and consistent in your home? Ask yourself how can I achieve the following? 🌟Is it easy? If your child views reading at home hard, struggle and stressful (like in school) you are not going have a happy kid. They are now reluctant. 🌟Is it obvious? Your home represents many things— prayerfully a safe haven of peace and love. But is it obvious throughout that your home is a reading home by evidence of a plethora of books. 🌟Is it satisfying? Reading helps us identify and affirm who we are. The right book for your child will connect with them like no other activity. My daughter would read uplifting stories about kids that overcame mental struggles and hardships and now she wants to be a doctor “that helps people.” 🌟Is it attractive? Students deserve high quality and engaging books! Does the book look “good?” My middle grade boys enrolled in my reading programs always get excited when they see a book cover with sports 🏀 ⚽️ 🏈 on it. That’s “attractive “ to them. (The girls always seem to like sports books too and feel good books about friendships.) Of these four tips that build reading habits what is the easiest one you can implement today? #readmorebooks #read #readinghabits #parentsupport #readingtips #youngandoldreaders #aheadofthecurve #ShauntelleModeste DM if you are interested in our ongoing reading programs in progress and upcoming summer enrollment.

BUT...I give them a lifeline. I train students to record-as-they-read to retain ideas, thoughts, and information on sticky note. Easy to use and fun for kids to have permission to doodle, draw, and write which kids LOVE to do. The act of writing forces them to “think” as they read. Read. Write. Think = Greater Comprehension. 👍Highly Engaged Parents, Does your learner seem to get lost in their words on the page? When I teach my reading students, I observe they lose their place on a page frequently. ✏️Give them a tool to help them keep their place on the page. These reading tools are known as “visual pacers.” 📏You can actually purchase “Guided Reading Highlight Bookmark Strips Colored Overlay Reading Tracking Rulers for Dyslexia, ADHD and to Reduce Visual Stress Pacers” on Amazon I access what I have on my desk: *Index cards *small ruler *tip of a pen *edge of a bookmark *my finger The movement of my finger helps me sweep through the lines and moves the story along for me. Give it go tonight! This strategy helps with fluency building (speed and accuracy of reading) and increases focus which leads to greater comprehension. What visual pacer might be the easiest for your student? #readingtipsforparents #readingsuccess #readingcomprehensionstrategies #readingtips #learnersuccess #fluencybuilding #Aheadofthecurve #ShauntelleModeste Link for copy of these tips in bio

On this last day of the official Black History Month, I want to highlight our future with the following two children books to close out the Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Door books shared all of February. The folllowing are books written by my “ history in the making “ daughter Madelyn. Book 1: Mariella Can’t Wait by Madelyn Modeste “In this book ten year old Mariella has a big problem. She can’t wait for a special package from her grandmother. She is frustrated. How can Mariella solve her problem?” Book 2: Mariella Is Frustrated by Madelyn Modeste In this book twelve-year-old Mariella has a big dilemma. Mariella is frustrated because she can’t find a special treat at any restaurant. She is frustrated. How will Mariella solve this new dilemma? If applied knowledge is power what revelations might be gained from your next read with your child? What books could you add to your child’s bookshelves shared here all month? Did you know picture books are one of the best sources for learning new information? Three reasons why: 1) The book is short and the information is easier to digest 2) Authors use more powerful vocabulary to get the ideas of the book across. So there are more “sophisticated “ language user and it’s building vocabulary 3)The illustrations help students visualize the story. Visualization strengthens comprehension and understanding of the text. Add more picture books to your rotation of readings for your children, the youngsters and the older ones alike!
