Social connection reduces the risk of premature death. It can predict better physical and mental health outcomes and ease stress. Higher levels of connection can also influence health-related behaviors.

Weโre all struggling with our mental health these days!
The problem is that there are not nearly enough therapists, and many families do not feel they can meet their mental health needs through formal mental health treatment.
I had so much fun recording a lightning talk for the upcoming National Systems of Care Virtual Summit, Better Together: Building Systems that Care. This Lightning Talk shares research about how low socio-economic families prefer to have their mental health needs and how mental health professionals can show up differently. This talk focuses on the Social Influences of Mental Health and helps people understand how we hold the solution to our mental health crisis.

So honored and grateful for the opportunity to work with California Training Institute on a two-part training on the importance of social connection and social support in child and family-serving systems.
Big shout out to all the fantastic participants - thank you for your enthusiasm and engagement. We hope the training has equipped you with the knowledge and skills to make a real difference in the lives of the children and families you serve.
If you're struggling with your mental health, you're not alone! We all struggle with mental health at some point in our lives.
There are many reasons for these struggles, and we need to know the root causes to put the right intervention in place. But it's also important to know that we have the power to impact our mental health.
As a Doctor of Public Health and a licensed mental health counselor, I focus on preventing diagnosable mental health conditions. My goal is to arm everyday people with the tools to improve their mental health and that of those in their circle. To that end, my area of expertise is in what I call the "Social Influences of Mental Health (SIMH)."
So, here are the five things impacting our mental health or SIMH:
๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ป๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐: Socially connected people experience a sense of belonging to a group and feel close to others. It involves feeling loved, cared for, and valued, forming the basis of our interpersonal relationships.
The help, advice, and comfort that we receive from those with whom we have stable, positive relationships define social support.
When you feel that you have a network of support or contribute to the support of others, you experience a sense of belonging to that community.
Social media has both positive and negative aspects. It is necessary to understand how to use this connection tool in a way that will promote better mental health.
Social inclusion is when all groups of people have the same rights, opportunities, access to resources, and benefits.
Taking care of your mental health is a journey that starts with understanding how these social aspects can affect it. It's time to audit your life and make the changes that will benefit you the most!
How satisfied are you with each of these aspects?
Humans are social beings. The need to connect with other human beings is built-in into our system, and we are wired for social connection. Research has shown that people perceive the world around them differently when they feel connected and supported by others. Social connection can be deepened and strengthened over time with conscious efforts.

Are there times when you feel you're living a miserable life? Do you sometimes feel unhappy?
The truth is that life doesn't always work the way we want it to. While most of us want to live a happy life, many of us often do things (sometimes subconsciously) that make us unhappy. We may think our periods of unhappiness result from things not going our way, but some of our habits and actions contribute to that feeling.
Let's reflect on the 10 things you may be doing which make you unhappy or less happy than you can be.
โ
Make complaining a habit
โ
Compare yourself with others
โ
Be hard on yourself
โ
Live up to others' expectations
โ
Replace social connection with self-isolation
โ
Do things you don't love
โ
Constantly worry about things
โ
Suppress your emotions
โ
Avoid sunshine and nature
โ
Let your problems overwhelm you
Which one resonates with you, and how do you deal with them?
