Happy National Bison Month!

Bison have many positive impacts on the environment, here are a few:

🦬 They graze the grasses at different heights, providing nesting grounds for birds.

🦬 Bison roll around and pack down the soil in depressions in the ground known as wallows. Their wallows fill with rainwater and offer breeding pools for amphibians and sources of drinking water for wildlife across the landscape.

🦬 Their manure and urine supply important nutrients for the plant cover.

🦬 Bison's hoofs stir the soil, helping to bury seeds and to create small pockets in the earth to capture precious moisture.

As we move toward July, monarchs may be moving into their third generation of the year.

The year's first generation of monarchs is born in the South, and is the offspring of monarchs that have migrated from Mexico. That generation moves north and lays eggs, and soon, the great-grandchildren of the monarchs from Mexico may be starting to lay eggs in northern areas.

The fourth generation will begin the migration to Mexico at the end of the summer, though some monarchs will breed in the South one more time. While the second or third-generation monarchs we see in the summer will only live for two to six weeks, the final generation lives through the winter in order to make their migration north again next spring and start the cycle all over again.

Check out the annual cycle in the photo and next time you see a monarch, you can try and think about which generation you're seeing!

After 2.5 years of this little shop, our oldest child realized where the name came from! 😂
It also made me realize that I maybe hadn’t shared publicly where I found this name! I wanted something that reflected the core values of children in play and connection to the natural world. The Little Hollow seemed too perfect plus it has the added bonus of being connected to one of my babies! 🌱

Happy World Bee Day! 🐝

Bees are good at building, super social and responsible for around a third of every mouthful of food you eat! There are around 20,000 bee species worldwide so odds are one of them will make you buzz! If that’s true check out the Nebraska Bumble Bee Atlas- a statewide community science project aimed at tracking and conserving Nebraska’s native bumble bees.
