In light of our recent graduates, UNL Men’s Rugby would like to highlight the graduates! Beginning with Mike Wood, here is a note from Coach Zak:

“Mike Wood, since the beginning of his Rugby Career 3 years ago has not only been one of the most athletically gifted players UNL Rugby has seen in the past 10 years but also exemplified a strong sense of leadership very early on.

Over time, Mike gained more and more of a vocal presence on the team but always set the example on the pitch. He was a defensive nightmare from Day 1 and never shied away from aggressive contact. That level of play created a trust in the team that Mike had everyone’s back. And later on in his career, he had several coaches even look up to him at times.

What Mike was to the team this season, however, was a Mike Wood character like no other. Mike’s 2024 7s performance landed him with over 25 tries and 11 tries just at the Heart of America Qualifier. He was nearly the unanimous MVP of the 2024 season and earned a side-by-side honor for 2024 7s Player of the Year alongside Lucas Fleming.

It’s an understatement to say Mr. Mike Wood will be missed on the UNL Rugby pitch, I personally will miss coaching the young man. Mike definitely made his mark and was a part of the most successful 3-year span UNL Rugby has ever seen. Earning a top finishes at USA Collegiate Rugby 7s Nationals the past 3 years: 3rd place (2022) 2nd place (2023) and 15th place (2024).

The coaches and the team will miss this young man as he conquers his next opportunity both in finance and as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army.

However, I especially will miss him as his coach the last 3 years. He has developed into an amazing young man, and I couldn’t be prouder to say he came through the program.

This month UNL Rugby and 12 of their players participated in Mustache 4 Kids by growing out a mustache for the whole month of May! The Husker Hair Harvesters grew some sweet staches this month😏

The Collective For Hope is a therapeutic grief organization that provides a wide range of community grief support for families that have lost loved ones. They routinely have support groups throughout the week that provide expressive outlets for children, teens, and adults dealing with grief and trauma.

We at UNL Rugby thought that this would be a great opportunity to give back to the community after such a shocking last week of events in Nebraska♥️

Mustache 4 Kids is a unique fundraising organization that only has one requirement for participants wishing to become a sponsoring fundraising partner, which is we all have to shave today and grow a Mustache throughout the Month of May!!

So at UNL Rugby we have a total of 12 participants!

Mr. Lucas Fleming is not only an exceptional Rugby player, who has been recognized by our strongest competition as a marquee player for our club, but Lucas is also a devoted leader of the UNL Rugby club.

Even as a freshman, knowing absolutely nothing about the game, he came to that first game against KU ready to roll. Playing Flanker as a freshman he bullied other teams right off the bat, but he also tried to lead both vocally and by example as a 1st year 3 years ago.

Now his Rugby career has taken off, largely due to the off the field work he puts in, and he’s gained several opportunities to play for high level clubs around the country in the offseason, with the hopes of going pro one day.

It’s been an absolute blessing to be his coach the last 3 years and watch him become the exceptional athlete he has molded himself into.

Very proud to see that the University of Nebraska–Lincoln recognized his contributions and achievements this year.

Enough cannot be said about this young man.

Today, a few Nebraska Rugby players made it out to Omaha to watch Big Red Rugby, Northwest Missouri, Millard South, and Westside high school compete against each other!

It was great getting to know some future Huskers looking to play at the next level and see rugby growing in Nebraska♥️🏉

NEBRASKA WE DID IT!!

Just three weeks ago, the Nebraska Men’s Rugby Club put together an effort to fund their NCR Nationals run in Washington D.C.

Now, the club can proudly say they have accomplished their goal. Over the past few weeks, players and coaches have been fundraising not for a trip but for a chance to compete at one of the highest levels in collegiate rugby.

To everyone who donated and spread the word about the fundraiser, the players and coaches of Nebraska rugby extend their utmost gratitude. Due to your generous efforts, our players were given the chance to fulfill a season-long mission by competing for a National Championship.

Without the support from all of you, none of this is possible!🌽
