Annual Gulf trip!

The difference between 2nd and 8th is narrow! Finished in 8th today on Lake Atkins KBA tournament. The difference in finishing higher was simply ex*****on. I said before the day started I would only get 6 bites due to conditions with high winds. That’s exactly what I got. The problem? Only 3 of those got in yak to be measured. The bait I wanted to throw wasn’t working so I switched to a wacky rigged senko, and didn’t have my gear or myself in tune with the switch. The upside I will be better prepared next tournament. Still a great day on the water!

Wrap up post for Hobie Bass Open Series on Sam Rayburn Reservoir, TX. Water temps were up, water level was down. I traveled down on Thursday night, practiced Friday in two areas and settled on San Augustine area. It seemed to have larger bass than the first area. Finished day one catching about 8 or 9 bass and was in 36th place. Started day 2 on a spot where bass were schooling on day 1, but the bite wasn’t there. Conditions had changed, no wind, cloudy and storms nearby. So I switched to a baby bass colored spook (topwater) and found what they wanted. Was getting lots of bites and was in the top 20 around noon, when storms and lightning appeared. I was over a mile across the lake from the ramp and had a decision to make. Stay where I had quality fish biting or play it safe and head back across lake. I decided to play it safe as the potential for that scenario to turn south was significant. I gave up 3 hours of fishing in a prime area and couldn’t find the fish in the new “safer” area. The decision wound up costing me a shot at top 20 in a Hobie BOS but it was the right decision. Still finished in 39 out of 115 of against the best kayak bass anglers in the country. Shout out to my fishing partner Johnny Maddox for doing some early scouting. Always a great trip to the awesome fisheries in Texas.

C-man and I fished KBA Degray Lake this weekend. I was running on about 8 hours of sleep over the previous couple days and not on my A game. Add 150 boats from the Trader Bills championship and a cold front moving in and needless to say fishing got tough quickly this day. I pretty much stayed back let C-man take lead on our spots. He caught 3 nice keepers early fishing a favorite point of ours, then fishing quickly turned south. We spent the rest of the day catching smaller fish and trying to find upgrades. The highlight for me was watching C-man pretty well fishing his own tournament with little input from me.
