The light on this beautiful baby was breathtaking this morning. Couldn’t help but want to capture it!
Do you have a favorite flower? Is it due to it’s looks, fragrance or because someone special once gave you that variety? My faves are lilacs, peonies and roses… Lilacs because my mom planted tons of them along our fence at my childhood home and I LOVE how they smell… Peonies because they are stunning when the bloom and I had them for my wedding bouquet and roses because, well, they’re gorgeous! Spring is here and I can’t wait to see lots of these soon! 🌹💐🌺🌷🌻 * * *
Embarking on a few new magical endeavors… excited to use some new skills and ideas!
Hoping you have a wonderful holiday and a fantastic new year!
Does anyone out there remember Mola Ram from Indians Jones??? He was the guy who ripped another guy’s heart out in the movie. So there is your reference point to this image… this is the costume I made for my husband (pictured here in a past Halloween) as that character. I sculpted the horns and teeth necklace and thrifted/sewed the rest (including the shrunken head 😂). 5 days and counting until All Hallows’ Eve!
🧡🎃👻🐈⬛🍭
It’s Halloween week and I couldn’t be more excited! Wanted to share one of my favorite costumes (if you don’t know me - this is me as the female version of Sherlock Holmes from a couple years back). Virtually every year for the past 15 years I have made costumes for Halloween 🎃. Some for myself but mostly for my family and friends. Some are thrifted, some are sewn and or sculpted by me and some are a mix of the those. Is your favorite holiday Halloween too? 👻 I wish it could come at least twice a year!! 🐈⬛🍁🧡🎃
Throwback Thursday to an incredible senior session a few years ago. Great model with confidence, poise and personality you can feel in the images. The trifecta for getting amazing portraits!
I’ve been looking a lot at my favorite work lately and it seems I that I really like shooting into the sun. I’ve been doing it my whole career but this year I’ve embraced it in a whole new level. There is something about the warm glow that really calls to me and backlit images just seem dreamy… the good kind of dream. 😊
This is Star. She is my little pride and joy. Of all of the things I photograph, I tend to photograph her the most, which is telling. She is readily available though. I’m pretty sure I have well over 1000 photographs of her in my phone right now. 😳
She is around 17 and purrs like a finely tuned motor for hours, unlike any other feline I’ve ever known. Just thought she was worth sharing today. Happy Tuesday! 🐈⬛❤️
Sharing an urban session of one of my best senior models this year… we had a great time in Boulder getting these shots by exploring the alleys near Pearl. Loved this one!
This quote really resonates with me and I wish I’d taken it to heart years ago. I think it is one of the keys to finding joy and contentment in life and a wonderful mantra to live by!
Another favorite session I am excited to feature. I’ve found the most beautiful places and spaces around Centennial (South of Denver) where the stars seem to align and the settings are breathtaking! The people I get to work with are quite wonderful and are truly what make the images beautiful! 🍂🍁
The Fall colors and colder weather are taking me back to this adorable cutie and one of her chickens 🐓 (swipe to the second photo if you don’t know what I’m talking about). The wardrobe selection, leaves and available props(which included said chicken 🐔) made everything come together beautifully. 💛📷
Starting to get excited about October 31st! It’s my favorite time of year and I finally got to decorate today! The first image is a beautiful black cat 🐈⬛ that I happened upon in my trip to Oregon last month. The other three are a few of the details of the new decor around the house. Really looking forward to Halloween weekend already! 🎃 Anyone else out there starting to get into the “spirit”???
Throwback to one of my favorite sessions of all time. This was back in Phoenix quite awhile ago but there was something magic about these kids that I just loved! That magic is what makes me like to do this kind of work. 🌟🪄📷
Photo tip today! When displaying photos, usually the best option, as in life, is to keep it simple. Simple white frames and mats make these colorful images pop and bring the focus right to the image and the face of the beautiful girl within. Of course there are zillions of options available for frames, mats and how to display art and you should always go with something you like that also enhances the art framed within. Best rule of thumb… if you are looking at the frame more than the art, choose another frame (or get better art)!😉
A few more images of Huntington Beach. Hoping that the wildlife recover and that no further damage is done. 🤞🧡
As a photographer, I’m constantly aware of perspective. Where I am in relation to what I am capturing in the camera really matters and effects the result. The same holds true for virtually everything in life… and why this quote makes sooooooooo much sense to me. I hope your week is off to a wonderful start and if not, I hope it turns around.
😊🌸🧡
This is a twilight shot of the Huntington Beach Pier in California taken a few years ago. This is place where oil is flowing into the ocean right now from a cracked pipeline a couple miles from the beach where multiple oil platforms are permanently stationed. HB was a place that I got to call to home for three years and it is beautiful, full of amazing places and spaces and wildlife and has an incredible vibe. I go back often as it still holds a piece of my heart. Said heart is breaking right now for all of the marine and wildlife effected by this tragedy. Now more than ever, for so many reasons, we need to move away from fossil fuels… it just isn’t worth it when the technology for a better environment and a better future exists and can be part of the solution if only profits could be set aside, for once for the things that actually matter. 💔.
There is something so simple about putting a little boy next to a pile of dirt and watching what happens.
I sincerely love the principle of “keeping it simple” in both life and photographs.
Happy October!! I wanted to celebrate that fact with a lovely throwback to one of my favorite October shoots from a few years back. Full disclosure, these are my peeps! (I’m the blond in the last image)… That being said, everything was perfect on this day for the images we created. Perfect weather, beautiful sunset, crazy amazing leaves 🍁 in the park down the street and perfect funky vintage couch that we scored for $10 at a garage sale. We hauled that sucker over to the park and it made for the best prop! (This is also the same couch that we used in some of our favorite wedding pictures but I’ll save that topic for a later date). I sincerely hope your October is off to a wonderful start! 😊
This is Polly, my dog-in-law, whom we are currently babysitting. She is a sweet girl and looks oh-so-sad here, but I assure you she is having a wonderful stay. I found her new talent! I believe she is quite the “eye dancer”, don’t you think?
👀
What is your favorite fruit? If you had 600 of that kind of fruit, what would you do with them???🍑🍑🍑
Glass is an amazing thing. Delicate, clear (most often), and an incredible tool, it is hard to believe that it glass is essentially molten sand that has cooled into the amazing shapes that people have morphed it into.
A photographer, such as myself, wouldn't get very far without glass. Sure, there are pinhole cameras (which are super fun, btw), but without the glass lens, the camera would sparsely be able to focus on what "matters". This little sphere of glass that I am holding in this image was sold to me as a novelty "crystal ball" that is supposed to tell of the future, but I really think that glass is a gateway to both the present and the past. Eyeglasses and microscopes lets us view things as they are right now while camera lenses create a record of our history and telescope lenses record the map of the galaxies as they were millions of years ago. Maybe this link to the past and present is why the crystal ball has become such a metaphor for telling the future. And to think that none of that would be possible without something as mundane as sand.
So I began my love of photography in high school at the age of 14 when I was gifted my first camera by my dad. I was actually intrigued before then (around 5 years old) because my dad had a darkroom in our basement and used to print his own photos, so I guess you could say my career trajectory may have been influenced way back then.
Fast forward to college. After trying out 3 colleges and a couple science based majors (I wanted to be a paleontologist at one point), I realized that I really only wanted to do the art (specifically photo) thing. As such, I was accepted into the BFA photography program at Indiana University and at that point FELL IN LOVE with the darkroom. I earned an actual Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography (unusual, right???) after countless late nights in that darkroom, enjoying the weird toxic smell of the fixing bath and watching the magic happen under mysterious red light.
The darkroom is where the name "Silver Ink" comes from. The technical way of creating an image on either film or paper (the way it used to be done...), is by exposing the silver halide crystals that are coated on said film/paper to light and then soaking them in a cocktail of chemical baths. The exposed silver particles turn dark and the unexposed crystals stay "white" and that is essentially what yeilds the result of a film negative or a classic black and white photograph.
So I decided to pull my business name from that process.
I've always considered that special silver (in the film and paper) the "ink" that creates the image (though, yes, I am taking liberties in that assessment). That is where the name was born and now it has stuck.
I've obviously widened my spectrum of imagery to include color (*which can still involve silver, depending on the process) but the magic of photography for me is still rooted in that "Silver Ink" and black and white photography still has a hold on my heart to this day. 📷❤️
One more round from Oregon and a classic example of clothing that works for beautiful portraits. Layers, accessories, simple jewelry and an adventurous and fun attitude all contributed to making these images work! Thanks !!
Golden hour beauty … couldn’t ask for a better model.
I so love the golden hour when the sun dips below the horizon and everything becomes magical.
So excited to work on the portraits that I got to take in this amazing place! So inspiring. 😊🌄🏞
I had soooooo much fun with Lindsay! She was amazing to work with! And that smile…. 😊
