This being human is a guest house. Every morning is a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor...Welcome and entertain them all. Treat each guest honorably. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

Whiskey is my spirit animal. She sent me on a vision quest about substance use.
I started alcohol and to***co in my late teens, and until one day in August 2017, I’d used them faithfully to fuel good times and to relieve life’s stress.
As part of my contemplative practice, I ask myself “what do I want?” before going into meditation. Until that fateful day, I would often hear “sobriety.”
The Universe answered swiftly after a night of over consumption, leaving me feeling as if death had warmed over. Exactly what this stubborn human needed to ignite change.
Since then, I haven’t smoked a cigarette nor consumed hard alcohol, and as of almost 2 years ago, not a drop of alcohol at all.
I’ve never felt more alive, nor seen the world so clearly. Who knew whiskey could have this effect? Deep down inside, I guess I did.

Mindfulness and meditation, at their simplest, are forms of brain training. At their richest, they can evoke profound mind, body and spiritual transformation.
It is the mind that controls how we experience and take in the world around us, as well as, how we interact with it.
Flexing the mind muscle for strength and resiliency like we would any other muscle in the body – through consistent, dedicated conditioning – allows us to function in work and life at our best and brightest.
While much energy and information has traditionally focused on keeping our physical body well, science is shifting the conversation towards the mind and the integral part it plays in our overall well-being.
Neuroscientist Dr. Richard Davidson has been on the cutting edge of research in terms of positive emotions and the effects of mindfulness practices on the brain for two decades, discovering that wellbeing is a skill that can be learned like any other. Because the brain has neuroplasticity, or the ability to be shaped and molded, and because we as humans are also gifted with higher intellect and awareness, we have the power to transform our being by cultivating simple, healthy habits of mind. What an awesome and empowering revelation!

Who’s got a ruthless internal critic judging your every look and move? Or an inner voice that disregards your pain and suffering time and again? We all do. And we find that those who are most critical of others are even more critical of themselves.
These tendencies are a byproduct of our innate negativity bias. It's part of the human condition and designed to protect us from external threats. But when negativity bias goes rouge like in the case of self-loathing, we find we’re on guard against ourselves.
Mindfulness and meditation train the brain towards positivity by first helping to bring our awareness to the thoughts, self-talk and behaviors that go against self-love. Then, taking steps to give ourselves the same kind of care and understanding that we would a good friend or beloved family member. In doing this, with practice, we transmute inward negativity into self-compassion thereby tapping into a brilliant source of resilience and personal power.
Not to be confused with narcissism, turning compassion inward, allows us to soften towards ourselves first so that we can then soften to others. This type of inner work is what transforms our lives and relationships for the better.

Every cloud has a silver lining - a metaphor for the bright side that usually accompanies even the darkest of troubles.
Ever wonder how some people always seem so happy, like they never have a bad day? Even when going through tough times they always seem to stay optimistic and in control.
Here’s a hint: it’s not a trait they’re born with. It’s something we can all learn by training our brain in that way.
In fact, this training is necessary to calibrate our innate negativity bias which can be really useful to help us guard against threats. But, like any bias when in overdrive, it warps the way we view the world leaving us pessimistic, distrustful and cynical towards life.
We know through scientific studies of mindfulness and meditation that we can reprogram neuropathways for optimism. Not the blind pollyanna kind, but more grounded, reasonable and realistic optimism.
Clearing negative energy is an important strategy when it comes to holistic wellbeing.
Develop a steady meditation practice and see yourself transform into a state of calm, positive, balanced being. One that helps you navigate life's storms with greater ease and grace.
This one's really hard to get our heads around but when we do, we connect with a magical source of personal power 🌟💪

You Need a Quick Yoga Fix!
It’s not all about fancy pretzel moves. In its simplest form, hatha yoga combines deliberate, gentle movements and stretches with conscious breathing.
Yoga is designed to release stored stress, tension and inertia making the body stronger, more pliable, and less prone to injury. A flexible body also translates to a flexible mind.
Overall, consistent practice helps us to maintain balance and function at our best, moving through life with greater ease and grace.
Stretching and exercising the body should be done to some degree every day, especially if we have mostly sedentary jobs. Not much time is needed to realize the many benefits, and while doing so first thing in the morning is ideal to help the body wake up, any time of day will do. In fact, it may be a welcome midday break from work stress or frustration.
Search up office yoga on YouTube or in your mindfulness app and give it a try.
Feel the difference for yourself - no doubt your body will give you a big sigh of thanks!
A high EQ makes all the difference in terms of long term success and happiness.
Often thought of as a solo practice, mindfulness can also notch up team performance in remarkable ways.
Simple practices where each person centers on the breath or sits in silence are mental training geared towards improving clarity, focus and emotional intelligence.
When a team of people working towards the same goal fosters this type of present-focused attention, non-judgmental processing of what’s happening and respectful issue resolution, they create far more opportunities for achievement of desired outcomes.
Former basketball player and Coach Phil Jackson is an awesome example of using mindfulness to lead and build teams. Complimenting players’ physical endurance and technical abilities with mental training, he coached the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers to 6 and 5 championship titles respectively. He took a holistic approach to teamwork and now finds himself NBA’s most winningest coach of all time with 11 championships.
Work teams, family units, and any group looking to achieve their collective best can foster mental strength and fortitude through mindfulness to step up their game.
Summer’s coming to a close, school’s back in session, and there’s a natural shift to more rhythm and routine.
As humans, our bodies and minds crave the comfort that routine offers because it grounds us; bringing predictability in an unstable world. In fact, daily routines keep us sane and healthy. Without them, we’re more mentally, physically and emotionally drained. If better wellbeing is what you want, a routine may be just the trick to making it happen.
Studies find that healthy and long-lived people have regular daily habits. They go to sleep at about the same time every night. Wake at the same time every morning. They eat their meals at the same time every day. Take breaks at set times. And activities and exercise fit into their regular daily schedule, weekends included.
One of the biggest benefits of routine is that it allows us to maximize our time. When we create schedules and time blocks, we can get through our deliverables more efficiently and effectively because we’ve reserved time and mental power for them. By creating a routine around our to-do lists, we become more accountable for our time. Then with consistency, we build routines and rituals that nourish us, our goals and our desires.
