These beanies are hand-crocheted by a Los Angeles-based craftivist Tsukuru Fors.

Craftivists (craft + activists) are people who utilize the power and love of their crafting to make the world a more peaceful and equitable place.

The act of crocheting, hand-weaving a fabric to shape into a wearable goods, symbolizes weaving relationships and solidarity among people who may have little in common other than their shared humanity.

Tsukuru runs the "Sponsor-A-Beanie" program, giving people the opportunity to "sponsor" a beanie for $10-20 and allowing them to participate in local mutual aid programs where Tsukuru donates the proceeds and the beanies to the unhoused. Every stitch is every step forward to foster a culture of caring.

Happy weekend!!!

Looking for a simple way to relieve some stress? Since most of us spend much of our day at the desk, often stressing about work, it’s important to find quick and easy ways to release stress from our body and our mind.

TSUBO STRESS THERAPY is a great way to do just that – by pressing on pressure point activators with the tool, you can quickly relieve tension.

The simple tool builds on the tradition of acupuncture, originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine. It can also be both heated up to provide some warmth and chilled to cool you down.

🌱 Materials: Ceramic

♻️ Biodegradable/compostable: No.

🌏 Reasons why ceramics are good for the planet: Ceramic is a very durable material which can still look new after decades of use. If it does end up in landfill one day, it doesn’t release microscopic particles which pollute the environment for centuries to come – unlike plastic.

🍃 Why should you care about sustainability and natural ingredients when shopping for self-care products?

🌺 Many big-brand options contain chemicals which are terrible for both your health and the planet. Natural non-toxic skincare, on the other hand, uses tried and tested ingredients.

🌿 Firstly, this means that the non-toxic products don’t need to be tested on animals – there are no new and potentially harmful formulas added to the products.

🌻 Secondly, in contrast to the chemicals you will often find in big-brand options, the ingredients are gentle on your skin and don’t irritate or dry it out.

🌱 Lastly, since most of the ingredients included in non-toxic products have a long history of use in self-care, we can be sure about what their long-term effects are!

What non-toxic brands would you like to see in our shop?

More coming soon in our NEW Self-care collection (◍•ᴗ•◍)✧*。

NEW BLOG! Mothers: Natural Eco-Warriors 🌱🌱🌱

April we celebrated Earth Day. In May we celebrate Mother’s Day. And today I write about my personal perspectives on mothers being human races’s natural eco-warriors. I strongly believe that mothers are innate eco-moms and are great allies in the fight for healthier lives and a more sustainable earth.

🌏 Why wrap our food in plastic, when there are much more eco-friendly options available? Whether you’re freezing some fruit for a smoothie or preparing a snack, SILICONE FOOD COVERS are a perfect reusable alternative to plastic saran wraps.

🌱 Materials: Silicone food grade

♻️ Reusable: Yes

🌱 Biodegradable/Compostable: No. But unlike plastic, silicone can withhold extremely low or high temperatures, preventing it from breaking down into harmful micro-pieces.

🌏 Reasons why plastic wraps are bad for our planet: Plastic infiltrates the environment. When it ends up in landfills or incinerators, both PVC and PVDC can release a highly toxic chemical called dioxin, says the World Health Organization. Also, the chemical compounds in the plastic can leach into your food and can be toxic for your body.

In this period of pandemic, having our own set of utensils when we “eat out” is also a safe and responsible act, for ourselves and everyone else.

Want to know how much contribution this little act can do? Let us make some computations based on a pandemic mix of 2 days at the office and 3-day work-from-home (WFH) arrangement. Assuming you eat out for lunch when at work, and order food delivery for lunch when on WHF, that’s an average of:

1 set of plastic utensils (spoon, fork, knife)

x 5 days per week
x 52 weeks

= 260 sets of plastic utensils (or 780 plastic pieces) > 780 pieces LESS in landfills / oceans due to the active effort of one SINGLE PERSON!

If we can bring our mobile phones, perfume and make up kits in our bags, why does it seem hard to bring our own set of cutlery?

Natural Loofah Dish Pad - an eco-friendly alternative to your conventional scouring pad or sponge.

Materials: Natural loofah

♻️ Reusable: Yes

🌱 Biodegradable/Compostable: Yes

🌏 Reasons why plastic utensils are bad for our planet: Your conventional scouring pad or sponge will typically be made from plastic and have a very short lifespan. This means that it releases microscopic plastic particles into the water whenever it is used and turns into waste quickly.

🌏 This year, the theme of Earth Day is ‘Restore Our Earth’. After decades that we as humanity have spent taking more than we give back on this planet, this focus comes at exactly the right time.

🌏 Overfishing, destructive agriculture, deforestation or industrialization of natural areas are only some of the ways our Earth has been suffering in recent years, usually in cases when profit came above all other considerations – so let’s restore it to its beauty. This is no impossible task; it simply involves focusing on regenerative practices and environmental regulation.

🌏 Restorative agricultural practices can ensure the soil doesn’t get depleted. Regulations of fishing practices can prevent whole ecosystems from being destroyed and species from becoming extinct. Stricter reinforcements of logging laws in the tropics can stop deforestation.

🌏 Knowing all that, how can we – as individuals – take part in this effort to restore our Earth? It’s important that we all vote with our dollar, supporting companies we believe in and boycotting those which are depleting natural resources. There are also certain products to avoid when possible, as they are usually linked to environmental depletion, such as palm oil, non-organic cotton or red meat.

♻️ With small changes, we can each make a big difference in the long run.

Happy Earth Day!

🧘 It’s today and I want to talk to you about "why a plastic straw is more than just a straw".

🥤In recent years, plastic straws have become a symbol of our reliance on single-use plastics in cases where most of us don’t actually need them. Because of their small size, they’re never recycled and therefore end up in the landfill, incineration facilities or worst of all – the environment. It’s difficult to estimate exactly how many plastic straws are being used every day – but according to experts, it could be around 500 MILLION PLASTIC STRAWS per day just in the US alone!

🥤If you want to play your part in stopping plastic pollution, it’s time to act and SAY NO to plastic straws. While they may seem like a small item in the short run, they quickly pile up as days, months and years pass.

🥤If you enjoy drinking with straws, there are some great environmentally friendly alternatives to try, made from stainless steel, glass, bamboo or silicone. These are reusable and easy to clean, which makes them ideal for sustainable parties or morning smoothies. Some, such as the bamboo straw, can even be composted at the end of their lifecycle!

This 4pcs. large stainless steel straw with cleaning brush and bag set is now available in our shop (。◕‿◕。)♥️

💙 New blog is up! "Reimagining Autism"

💙 Happy World Autism Acceptance month!

💙 This is such an important month for us, for our small business and for the ASD community. It shines a light on all those who struggle to succeed in a world that doesn’t always recognize their gifts. It’s a month where we can really amplify the need to educate the world that ASD individuals (adults and children) need your acceptance and understanding.

💙 Life can be extremely difficult for people with Autism. They face a myriad of obstacles in a world that is generally not designed with them in mind, facing problems with learning, both academically and socially. Despite trying extremely hard every day, individuals experience results that are minimal in comparison to their peers and social acceptance is momentary. The result is painful comparisons and bitter feelings of defeat, frustration and low self-confidence.

💙 Especially now, during this extraordinary time of a global pandemic where routines are majorly disrupted and support services are being affected. I can tell you it’s utterly heart-breaking, exhausting and stressful watching the person you love struggle to find their way in a world that is so difficult for them to be included in.

In solidarity with people with ASD and their families, please help raise awareness during this important month – thank you🙏💙💙💙

🌳 The Environment and Your Health

Living sustainably and living a healthy lifestyle often goes hand-in-hand. If you begin to care more for your environmental footprint, you’ll likely start seeing your health improve – and vice versa. It’s a great way to kill two birds with one stone (metaphorically – please don’t kill birds) and improve your overall quality of ways.

Some of the best ways you can tackle both include limiting your consumption of animals products, reducing your emissions to improve air quality, or switching to sustainable cleaning to reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals. Living sustainably also helps you get more active, as a sustainable lifestyle discourages the use of a car. If you’re a sustainability beginner, take it one step at a time and you’ll see big changes soon enough.

Let's be reminded that a healthy lifestyle also helps prevent some long-term health problems and diseases, which would take a toll on the environment because of all the resources necessary for treatment. Be mindful of your health as best as you can and taking this approach of prevention is the way to go for both you and our beautiful planet.

In a world where so many people forget about the importance of health and sustainability - strive for both.

🌎 Our purchase is powerful. Before we make that decision to buy an item for our home or work place, let us consider the following:

🤔 Do we absolutely need this new item?

🤔 Do we have something in our current home/ work space that can be used for the same purpose?

🤔 Is it possible to repair broken items instead of replacing them?

🤔 Will this new purchase fit my sustainable lifestyle objectives?

🤔 Consider the life span and cycle of the product to be bought. Focus on quality rather than quantity.

🤔 Look into the disposal options of the product such as buy-back, take-back or replacement options.

We love shopping! But the time has come for us to buy only what we need in the quantity that we require for our daily basic needs at home and at work place.

🌎 "It's only one toothbrush," said 8 billion people: the environmental impact of your plastic toothbrush.

🌎 On a journey towards sustainable living, it’s easy to dismiss making the little changes – such as swapping a plastic toothbrush for a more sustainable bamboo one. In the short term, it may seem like these swaps don’t make much of a difference – but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

🌎 The best way to improve the overall environmental impact of humanity is if we all take small steps to reduce our individual impact.

♻️ It’s not just one plastic toothbrush - let’s put the one plastic toothbrush into a global, long term perspective. Every year, 50 million pounds of plastic toothbrushes end up in the landfill just in the US alone. Aside from sitting in landfills, an increasing number is polluting the ocean.

👉 If we each substitute our plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one, we could eliminate this source of waste.

♻️ A plastic toothbrush is rarely recycled - there are some exceptions but most commercially available plastic toothbrushes can’t be recycled. That’s because they’re increasingly being made of composite plastics, which are near impossible to recycle efficiently.

👉 However, even if we could recycle all toothbrushes efficiently, we need to remember that most plastic is only ever recycled once before it becomes unrecyclable!

🌎 Let’s take steps to make our purchases more intentional and sustainable. This one change can make a whole lot of difference in the long run.

🥰 Check out Freshique’s line of ecofriendly bamboo toothbrushes and take this journey to reducing waste one step at a time.
