Experimenting with pon, leca, moss/perlite in my Alocasia journey was enlightening. Yet, they struggled 🥲— rotting roots, stunted leaves, lost corms puzzled me. It became clear: 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

After ~6 months of experimentation, I've crafted an aroid mix that merges the richness of New Zealand tree fern, the moisture-retaining properties of coco coir, and the aeration benefits of perlite. Each ingredient was carefully selected and tested until the perfect ratio is reached. This blend stands as the sole growing medium I rely on for nurturing my variegated Alocasia collection.

Not sure about you guys, but I do a lot of plant narration. This little guy decided to have root rot a few months back, reduced to a chonk and went dormant. As a hail Mary move, I repotted it into aroid mix and ignored it. She also ignored me for a while 🤡

But here comes the plot twist — When I decided to give up and bought another baby plant, she unfurled this beautiful leaf. So naturally, that’s my narration for her.

I have been looking for 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗼’𝘀 since moving 3 months ago. Yes, I did place them out nicely for this pic. The whole gang isn’t even out yet 😌🤌🏻

Due to limited space, I don’t have many regular Alocasias. Azlanii stands out as one of the few non-variegated ones I own, with its unreal combination of striking pink veins and dark leaves. And I just knew I needed to add a variegated one to the list.

This plant went through root rot when I was still tuning my aroid mix. She finally came back from the dead. Despite not having the best variegation, I’m hopelessly in love ❣

I finally remembered to check on this unfurling leaf last night and boy, oh boy 💀

Not sure what I am more afraid of: Keep it in moss and risk root rot; or repot and watch this full pink leaf throws a tantrum.

I would say “like mother, like daughter” but she looks nothing like her mom 😶

This plant has one of the most interesting variegations. Mom started with pink/albo as well (last pic) but turned aurea/GOG as the plant matures. Do you own a Var. Nobilis? If yes, how did the color develop?

And yes, I finally rescued her from being trapped in prop box 😅

I’ve been sharing more in stories than in posts/reels lately, but here’s the newest leaf that unfurled 2 weeks ago! This plant is one of the 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 variegated alocasias I own due to its 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. It’s easily prone to edema from overwatering/over-fertilizing, even just a tad bit more. Next picture/video show an older leaf that’s melting. I tried saving it by increasing air circulation while lowering humidity, but unfortunately, that didn’t help. 💀

Anyhow, this plant is going to take me a while to dial everything in. For now, I’m just going to embrace every new leaf, water sparingly, and refrain from fertilizing until the weather warms up.

This plant is a 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 due to its high variegation. It was melting non-stop in the past few months. Watered a little too much? Melt. Extra drop of fertilizer? Melt. Temp drop by just 5-10F? Melt. At first, I didn’t know what was happening and tried so many things including adding extra fan in the cabinet for extra air flow - which didn’t help.

Thank goodness it finally settled in after moving to self watering. But is it just me 💀 or do you have any horror plant story to share too?

Not gonna lie, one of my least favorite plant chores is watering moss poles. I always forget and water when it’s bone dry. If you try to water before misting, then water will just drip right off which turns into a mess 💀

Giving support to climbing/trailing plants promote growth and big leaves, esp if you can keep the moss pole moist and let aerial root grow into it. But oh man, I just can’t keep up. One of my plant goals in 2024 is to simplify plant parent life. Less work, more automation like self-water pots. The helicopter parent life just isn’t gonna work anymore, esp when I also own a plant shop rareplantbaeshop. It’s important that I don’t get burnt out from plants.

So far, this Manjula pothos has proven that you don’t need a moss-filled pole to have big leaves. Would you try it?

4 months ago, I decided to perform a 𝗿𝗵𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 on the mama plant. It was one of the most stressful things I’ve done. I checked both mama and stem cut profusely in the next few months. Probably 20 times a day?! 😵

Anyways, fast forward today - we have both a gorgeous sectoral baby and (thankfully still alive) mama plant ♡ Baby is going to her new home today. Although bittersweet, I’m slowly coming to terms that I can’t hoard every plant and that plant will grow.

I do know one thing for certain - she will make someone very happy.
