Seasoned florists, leave your advice, thoughts, and stories in the comments below for anyone out there reading this! We want to continue to create a welcoming and approachable community here - let's build each other up through owning your own business. 1. Business Structure 👉🏼Decide on a Business Structure: Choose whether you want to operate as a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), or corporation. Each structure has different legal and tax implications. 👉🏼Register Your Business Name: If you choose a business name different from your legal name, you must file a Fictitious Business Name (FBN) statement with the county clerk’s office where your business is located. 2. Business Licenses and Permits 👉🏼General Business License: Obtain a general business license from the city or county where you plan to operate your flower business. Requirements and fees vary by location. 👉🏼Seller’s Permit: Apply for a Seller’s Permit from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA). This permit allows you to collect sales tax on the flowers and other items you sell. 3. Tax Requirements 👉🏼Federal Tax ID Number: Obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS if you plan to hire employees or operate as an LLC or corporation. 👉🏼State Tax Registration: Register for state taxes with the California Employment Development Department (EDD) if you have employees. 4. Suppliers and Inventory 👉🏼Wholesale License: Obtain a resale certificate (part of the Seller’s Permit) to buy flowers and supplies at wholesale prices without paying sales tax. 👉🏼Find Suppliers and wholesalers: Apply for our Badge Program to ensure a consistent inventory of fresh flowers. 5. Training and Certification 👉🏼Florist Training: While not legally required, consider completing a floral design program to enhance you
