WORK IN PROGRESS ALERT! November 13!
2023 Joan D. Firestone Awardee, Kristina Wong and Kristina Wong: .
She will share stories and slides of her work as a food bank influencer in Los Angeles, the Navajo Nation and beyond. Peppered with Karaoke songs with her original lyrics, Kristina will help us to look at the future of emergency food. If food banks were originally a stop gap for a temporary crisis and now have become a permanent part of American survival, does this mean we are in a perpetual state of crisis?
We will also witness the Award Ceremony to the 2024 awardee: Creator, Director Taibi Magar
She is the Co-Artistic Director of the Philadelphia Theatre Company. This award will provide her with the resources to begin work on her newest project, Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut, a riveting story about a whale violently captured by the Miami Seaquarium who died in captivity despite a decades long battle by the Lumi Nation to bring her home.
The committee choosing the recipient consisted of Kim Bendheim, Linda Chapman, Joan D. Firestone, David Henry Hwang, Lynn Nottage, and Kristina Wong.

black odyssey at :
Obie-winning playwright Marcus Gardley (upcoming film adaptation of The Color Purple, The House That Will Not Stand) blends classic mythology, African-American history, and modern theatricality to create the poetic black odyssey. This vibrant reimagining of the Odysseus saga is set in modern-day Harlem, telling the epic tale of Ulysses Lincoln, a soldier facing the most daunting of voyages to reunite with his family. While fate may seem in control of Ulysses’ destiny, his ancestors and their buried history will help guide his journey home. Directed by Stevie Walker-Webb (Ain’t No Mo’).
We were so excited to rediscover some of these archives from Father Was A Peculiar Man, including the original NYT review and playbill! Repost from on the experience of Father Was A Peculiar Man:
“In 1990 I met an extraordinary artist while sitting across a kitchen table in LA. His name was and it was evident that he was fearless and endlessly talented and I brought him to New York and he created . Little did I know that, as we wheeled wheel barrows through the streets of the meatpacking district with car batteries attached to speakers, set up a 120 foot table each night that ran 3/4 of the way down Little West 12th street, and attempted to manage 60 performers and a marching band, that this show and this artist would be remembered as an esssntial part of American theatre history. one of the performers had taken 13 hours of footage to recreate the experience of the show and this film will be shown at the on February 20th. Many of the performers will be there and the film will be followed by a panel with Tony, Patricia Ybarra and I. The things that were possible in this pre 9/11 era can no longer be done. There has been too much gentrification and there are too many rules. Despite all this there are many of us that press on and I am grateful for the bravery that so many in our field exemplify, despite all the ways in which we are told things are impossible. This experience is a reminder that nothing is impossible if you persist.”
New logo, new tagline! 🏙️
