Turkish quilt-maker Sezer compares a quilt to friendship. Different shapes and patterns come together to create a harmonious whole. While patchwork textiles figure in Turkish art, Oya’s journey began in an unlikely place: Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. There she discovered the geometric beauty of Amish quilts. From there, it was a short trip to participating in the creation of a quilt celebrating the United Nations’ 50th Anniversary. Oya recently asked if I’d help her find a way to display the quilts she’d made over the years. I immediately suggested the exhibition you’re about to enjoy. The process began with gathering together quilts Oya had given away as gifts—often from places far from her Istanbul home—so they could be professionally photographed. Oya then wrote the backstory for each of her exhibited quilts.

Artist-Sahba Shere
Based in San Francisco/Bay Area + Palm Springs
From-Canada
Statement- Sahba's work is both inspired by and acts as a portal to the world around her. From the fall of dawn across Angkor Wat to the resonant tones meditation affords, Sahba's paintings speak through and of transcendental, experimental realms.
Her work is at once familiar and distinct, drawing upon recognizable markers of land, water, and sky, yet in simultaneous abstract and granular fashion. The resulting art objects evoke a sense of rumination and recollection. They are honest, tranquil and genuine.
She is also sought after for commissions and honored to have created unique works for art collectors including Art in Embassies, Patricia Clarkson ( NYC), Yale University ( New Haven) and Harvard University ( Cambridge), Apple, Google, and Linkedin ( Silicon Valley), and Hilton Hotels ( Bangalore), among others.
Artist- Salman Farooqi
Based in Karachi, Pakistan
From-Karachi, Pakistan
Description- Courtesy Metropolitan Mosaic| ArtCiti
Salman's paintings are full of refreshing energy, with skillfully stylized forms and geometric configurations. The smooth lines and bold compositions create brilliant effects and captivate the eye. While Salman experiments with realism, modernism and impressionistic landscapes and cityscapes his current exhibition focuses on cityscapes and realism.

BREAKING: US Department of Arts and Culture Staffers Call For
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The US Department of Arts and Culture isn’t a real federal agency, but as the placeholder until the government actually makes one, we call on all colleagues in federal government, campaign staffers, and federal contractors to urge President Biden to demand an immediate ceasefire to end the genocide in Gaza.
Israel’s inhumane blockade, illegal bombardment, and ground invasion have turned the Gaza Strip from an occupied apartheid zone into a catastrophic site of human suffering. The Israeli government’s inhumane military actions have displaced at least 1.5 million Palestinians, deprived 2 million of drinking water, and murdered over 10,000. As the Israeli government continues to flatten neighborhoods, bomb hospitals, schools, houses of worship, refugee camps, and fleeing civilians, the US government can not in good conscience stand by and support, directly or indirectly, a campaign of ethnic cleansing carried out by a nuclear power financed by US taxpayers.
As the agency tasked with supporting cultural organizers and artists across the country, we are keenly aware of the power that storytelling has played in this illegal war. Crises are often used as a way for those in power to weaponize our grief toward their own ends. In that grief and confusion, we too often let those in power sprint toward their own goals: profit, military occupation, extraction, violence.
The horrific attacks on October 7th are in no way an excuse for such a powerful nation to carry out indiscriminate bombing attacks, and dehumanizing war crimes. We simply cannot allow this massacre to continue. We cannot let the grief of this moment allow the Israeli government to perpetuate genocide of the Palestinian people in the name of self-defense. We can tell a different story; one that disrupts this false narrative that allows unprecedented human suffering and violence to be carried out under the banner of “self-defense.” We can tell a story that calls it what it is: genocide.

The U.S. Department of Arts and Culture contributes to the strength and vibrancy of the movement for collective liberation by resourcing and mobilizing cultural organizers and artists. We do this through political education, connecting cultural organizers and movement, policy engagement, and play and performance.
As a people-led and people-centered arts and culture department, we merge organizing, policy and performance to create a vibrant ecosystem that activates and harnesses spaces ripe for social, cultural and political change.

Artist- Munibah Nooresehr
Based in Lahore, Pakistan.
Nooresehr’s paintings are psychosocial interpretations of various traumas of her own life. Although the images are auto biographies of her soul she hopes to make a difference in the lives of many other women like her who are battling hard times. These stories carry strong influences of the visual vocabulary, grammar and technique of the Indo Persian school of manuscript paintings. The medium used is Gouache and gold on true Wasli and the process of painting translates into a magical, delightful, and lyrical trance for her. Munibah’s art practice is a constant and deliberate effort to preserve the art form in its traditional technique and flavor but she uses her training to create contemporary paintings which she relates to her own life and to the lives of so many women around her .She touches on social issues especially pertaining to women subjugation, patriarchy and and misogyny in our culture. The areas of interest in this series is the suppression of women in our culture due to the incorrect interpretation and exploitation of social and religious values. There are many hidden metaphors and recurring images of trees, ghosts, and other demons of her life. Her work is figurative, fluid and lyrical with a huge emphasis on the illuminated margins which are in fact paintings in their own entity.

The first U.S. freeway opened in California at 8 a.m. on July 20, 1940. Called the Arroyo Seco Parkway (and later the Pasadena Freeway), the road connects Los Angeles with Pasadena.
The Arroyo Seco Parkway was completed in sections (phases), and the opening of a 3.7 mile portion on July 20, 1940, is considered the official opening-although a small stretch less than a mile long was completed in 1938.
